In Old Town Temecula there is a cafe that is famous for its hamburgers and should be famous for its root beer floats as well. Mad Madeline’s Grill is a bustling, packed place even on a Saturday afternoon during torrential rains. A trophy with a gold-colored chef crowning the top reads “Best Burgers” as chosen by the judges of the Great California Hamburger Hunt.
Mad Madeline’s burger menu, dubbed Mad Combos, is where they shine. The menu reads, “Our hamburger meat is ground fresh daily, never frozen, and is prepared on the grill — not fried!” Burger prices range from $7.59 to $10.29. The extensive menu lists nineteen different hamburgers, including a Texas Burger with grilled pastrami, the Tractor Racer Burger with barbeque sauce and an onion ring and the Monster Burger, which is made with a one-pound beef patty. You can personalize your burgers by adding extras like bacon strips, avocado slices, salsa and even flavorful Ortega chilies.
One of their most popular (and juicy) hamburgers is the Guaca Burger, which includes creamy homemade guacamole on a half-pound beef patty. It’s bursting with fresh lettuce, onions, tomatoes and pickles, the hamburger is delicious, but you are guaranteed to make a mess when you eat it! In anticipation of this mess the waitress plunked down a handful of napkins on the table, which at first I thought I would never use, but I ended up needing every last one of them!
Their Root Beer Floats are creamy and delicious and are served with a spoon. Old-fashioned fries are tender and taste of real potato!
There are a few tables indoors, but the majority of the seating is located in the enclosed patio area. The plastic windows that shield diners from the elements are much appreciated on stormy days.
Mad Madeline’s is located in Temecula’s Old Town at 28495 Front Street. Call (951) 699-3776 for hours.
