Matt James makes New Year's Eve memorable at Trupiano's

The operatic tenor voice of Matt James soared to the silver balloon filled ceiling of Trupiano’s Italian Bistro New Year’s Eve, surprising and delighting guests who came to celebrate the end of 2006 with Faro Trupiano’s fine Italian cuisine. As strains of a romanza from Tosca muted the clink of silverware on porcelain and candles flickered on tables and in wall sconces, diners enjoyed a leisurely meal from the Italian chef’s New Year’s Special Menu that included halibut simmered in a citrus reduction and rich lobster ravioli. Each dish was thoughtfully paired with a wine selected by Faro.

No better compliment to a memorable Italian dinner exists than professionally performed songs from Italy, its composers and vocalists. James’ big voice flawlessly interpreted one after another Italian operatic favorite, then seamlessly moved to standards made famous by Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, all the while moving amongst the tables, drawing individual diners into the spontaneity of the moment.

James’ name may be familiar to Fallbrook readers; he first appeared at the Bob Burton in the “United We Stand” concert a few years back. He’s a longtime friend, and former client, of Fallbrook resident Elaine Cole, a now-retired artists manager. In addition to the singing career that keeps him booked in Los Angeles, where he lives, James is also a vocal coach and is currently developing a breathing technique for Parkinson’s patients. Once the protégé of vocal coach Seth Riggs, whose clients include celebrities like Madonna, James has worked with Herbie Hancock and coached singers recording under the Motown label.

His appearance at Trupiano’s came by chance, says Cole. In town to work on the breathing technique, James needed a supply of small drinking straws. Thinking he would have to search grocery stores in Fallbrook, Cole suggested he first ask at a local restaurant and suggested Trupiano’s. Faro not only gave James the straws but also asked him to audition for New Year’s Eve. Cole says Faro hired him on the spot.

For those people lucky enough to choose Trupiano’s Italian Bistro to christen the new year, Faro Trupiano’s chance encounter with Matt James popped the cork in grand style.
