Fallbrook basketball wins one out of three with Rancho Bernardo

Fallbrook’s junior varsity was the only Fallbrook High School basketball team out of all three teams to win against Rancho Bernardo on January 14. JV gradually built their score up, and at half-time they only trailed 21 to 29. The Warriors then hit five three-point shots in the same minute and took a one-point lead. The lead was then flip-flopping between the teams. The Warriors played hard from then on out until their score rose up above the Broncos’ in the crucial ending seconds. Overall, junior varsity’s players ran vigorously and they played 100 percent, which boosted their score up to win the match 44 to 43.

The varsity Warrior coaches all knew the Broncos were an amazing team before the game started and would be a challenge to defeat. The varsity Broncos were let loose to gallop into the lead and by halftime had 38 points, while the varsity Warriors were left behind with 22. The Warriors’ point guard, Justin Padilla, knocked in 20 points, while Marcus Bresnahan sank multiple three pointers. The Warriors also felt relief from Purtle and Tull, both of whom had improved during this game when they converted rebounds into layups. While many other shots had been missed, these two players were there to help until the end. The Warriors then closed in on the Broncos and made it a closer game. The varsity final score posted the Warriors with 55 and showed the Broncos with 70. This hurt the varsity Warriors’ record, which now shows 11 wins and 5 losses.

The freshman team opened the first half by trailing the Broncos 11 to 25. The young Warriors’ guard “Downtown,” also known as Seth Greenwood, heated up his game and made half of the Warriors’ baskets while he was playing as guard. During the second half, center Matt McClanahan also scored in the double digits.

Coach Madden described Seth’s skill as a player: “Whenever a team puts the press on us, Seth is able to take the ball downcourt no problem, since he has good dribbling skills. He is also able to pull up from three land and knock it down, and it surprised me every time.”

Madden gave a good description of another big point player, Matt McClanahan: “He is also our other three point getter, but he sits underneath the hoop and goes up for the shot and makes most of his layups down there and he hopefully converts the free throw.”

The freshman Warriors scored only into the 20s and were no match for the Broncos, who were the victors. The Broncos defeated the freshman squad with a 15-point margin.
