Girls rugby season begins

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook Girls Rugby Club (FGRC) has been getting ready for the Las Vegas Invitational which will be held the weekend of January 24-26. This annual event has been attended by the FGRC for the past three years, with U18 and selected U15 players competing this year.

The FGRC hosted leg #1 of the Winter 7s Series at Potter Jr. High on Dec. 21. The squad was divided into four competing teams, and earned first place. Leg #2 of the series took place on Jan. 11, with Fallbrook again taking first place. Leg #3 will be played on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Rob Field in Mission Bay, San Diego.

Seven-a-side rugby is a fast-paced and highly-skilled version of rugby played on the same full size field as fifteens but with only seven players per team. The game is only 14 minutes long, broken up into two seven-minute halves.

The team’s first home game will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15; the FGRC U18 team will take on Dixon High School from Northern California. The U18 and U15 Club season begins that same weekend. Times and places have yet to be finalized.

Current fundraising activities for team and individual expenses include selling See’s Candies for Valentine’s Day as well as delicious Popcorn Palace gourmet popcorn. To place an order from the team, contact fundraising coordinator Cindy Greer at (760) 723-3586 to learn about the current sales items.

Last year, “Support a Rugby Girl” began in which a local business is paired with a member of the team. Anyone interested in the team’s upcoming schedule, or in sponsorship, can contact the coaches at
