Oceanside wins Senior Challenge cribbage match

After losing five straight matches Oceanside Senior Center Peggers roared to a decisive victory in the 42-player match held February 23. Oceanside had 78 wins with 15 skunks to Fallbrook’s 69 wins and 6 skunks.

Fallbrook pegger Virginia Ballard had hot cards as she added a skunk to her sweep of 7 wins out of 7 games. Gerri Zavala edged fellow Oceanside pegger by 17 pegs for second place. The only other Fallbrook player in the top eight was John Vander Brink, who was fourth.

In fifth through eighth were Oceanside peggers Harold Shane, Judy Gilbertson, Tom Bongard and Marge Schultz.

It was Tom Bongard’s day, as he also won the $25 gift card donated by the Fallbrook Albertsons.

The March match will be held at the Vista Elks Lodge, 1947 E Vista Way [(760) 724-1968]. The play begins at 12:30 p.m. on March 23. All are invited to join the fun. The match consists of seven games. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. for those interested.
