Warrior Baseball faces LCC

The La Costa Canyon Mavericks came to play the Warriors April 8 on the freshman baseball field. Freshman Warriors’ pitcher Brennan Huelse’s first inning of pitching turned successful after giving up only one hit in the first inning. The Mavericks started pitching with John Blackledge as their opener. The Warriors’ first three batters all made hits to the infield, but all three were thrown out before reaching first base, quickly ending the first inning.

The Mavericks’ second inning hits went right to the shortstop twice, making two outs, the third coming from a strikeout. Fallbrook took a lead after a series of two hits and a walk to first, which loaded the bases for Warrior Jimmy Lindsey. Lindsey put his hit between the outfielders, finishing all three runners while he stopped on third. Justin Hargrove of the Warriors contributed with a hit to right field that let in two more points to make it a 5-0 game.

Warrior pitcher Huelse pitched well in the third inning, making one strikeout and allowing two hits that were caught and thrown to first base in time to get the runners out. Taylor Hughes started off batting for the Warriors in their third inning of hitting. The first three batters could not make good hits off Maverick pitcher Blackledge and the three outs shifted the game into the fourth inning, when Huelse finished his day off by pitching four innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.

Justin Hargrove’s hit in the fourth inning scored two runs, raising the Warriors’ lead by seven. The Warriors gave up one of three total Maverick runs while in the top of the fifth inning, when Bryce Norton made it to home base during a Maverick hitting spree that filled the bases but only allowed one run to score. At this point the Warriors commanded the lead but did not score again for the rest of the game. The Warrior infield blocked the Mavericks’ hits all the way into the seventh inning. In the final inning the Mavericks rallied enough to score again before the last batter was struck out to finish the game. Coach Jack Fresca led his freshman team to take victory over the Mavericks with an ending score of 7-3, giving the Warriors another season win.
