Fifth District This past Friday, common sense went out the window. At a meeting to determine the future of transportation dollars, the SANDAG Board of Directors voted to allocate $90 million for bike lanes in San Diego County. While I like bikes, most people use them recreationally. Despite less than 1% of San Diegans using bikes as their primary transportation, bike lanes are being built around San Diego County at $5.5 million per mile! Meanwhile, we’ve been told by S...
As we head into 2020, I want to let everyone know about the resources we have for the people of San Diego County. First, if you still have that Christmas tree and need to get rid of it, we are here to help. If you have a real tree, make sure to dispose of it in the proper way. Leaving your old, dry tree or wreaths lying in your backyard can spark fires. Make sure to check with your waste hauler or visit the county’s website, www.wastefreeSD.org to find a tree drop-off site nea... Full story
It’s been a fantastic first year as a San Diego County Supervisor and while I’ve learned a lot, none of it would be possible without you all. We’ve made some great strides at SANDAG, on behavioral health and Veterans Affairs as I mentioned last week. Locally, we initiated action with Chairwoman Jacob to dedicate $28 million to unincorporated area road improvements and maintenance. As we look ahead to 2020, I wanted to highlight some items we will be looking at. While we’ve... Full story
The end of the year is a great time to look back and look ahead. While it’s been a whirlwind first year as a San Diego County Supervisor, I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together! One of my big focuses when taking over the District 5 seat on the board of supervisors was fire safety. We all know fires are inevitable in San Diego, but we can make a difference by being prepared. We haven’t seen any major wildfires this year and that’s a credit to CALFIRE and all the technologies in place. Our new helitanke...
5th District We held our final board meeting for 2019 recently. It seems like just yesterday I was being sworn into office, and now the year is almost over. Despite it being our last meeting, it was very eventful. The first board letter we passed Wednesday, Dec. 11, was to help the businesses of Poway. Due to the “Boil Water” order that was issued a few weeks ago, businesses and restaurants were forced to temporarily close in Poway. However, 27 of those restaurants were abl... Full story
Fifth District Last week, we held our inaugural Holiday Open House. It was incredible to see so many constituents from District 5 coming together to celebrate the holiday season. It’s been a whirlwind first year as a County Supervisor. I’ve learned that it’s much different from being mayor of San Marcos. The county has a vast amount of responsibilities ranging from Health and Human Services to Weights and Measurements. All of which play an important role in making San Diego... Full story
District 5 I sound like a broken record, but SANDAG is up to their usual tricks. The latest update comes from SANDAG’s staff and their proposal to use an extra $90 million on bike lanes. Time and time again, I’ve sat in our SANDAG meetings and heard how the road projects the voters were promised, can’t be fulfilled due to a lack of money. A few months ago, we passed an agreement at SANDAG that prioritized SR-52, SR-67 and SR-78, yet when it comes time, this new money is going...
Where has the year gone? It seems like I was just being sworn into office and now it’s the holiday season. This is always a great time to reflect on the past year and a time to start looking ahead. I am grateful this Thanksgiving to have all of my children under our roof, even if it’s just for the day. It is one of the only times of the year we all get together, so we have a lot of catching up to do. We will talk about new jobs and maybe the football game on TV, but one thi...
The past few weeks have seemed like a ticking time bomb. While the winds howled and the temperatures rose, the likelihood increased that a major wildfire could devastate our region. Two fires broke out a couple of weeks ago, one in Ramona and the other in Valley Center. Each had the potential to grow into major events, except within a few minutes, helicopters were in the air and boots were on the ground. During my first 10 months on the San Diego Board of Supervisors much of...
SThe Neighborhood Reinvestment Program provides grant funds to nonprofit community organizations and public agencies for one-time community, social, environmental, educational, cultural or recreational needs. I take great pride in being able to allocate funds to some of the wonderful organizations in District 5, and while I wish I could give money to all of them, I wanted to highlight a few of the groups making a difference in District 5. The Boys and Girls Club of Oceanside...
It’s the old political stump speech, “If you elect me, I’m going to fix the roads!” While it’s a promise we’ve all heard, I’m pleased to tell you, we truly are doing something about the roads. Two weeks ago, Chairwoman Diane Jacob and I unanimously passed a board action to commit $28 million into critical road funding. It will benefit all those who live or travel in the unincorporated areas. San Diego County provides municipal services for the entire unincorporate... Full story
A few months ago, I toured the Vista Detention Facility and saw firsthand the incredible work being done by the Veterans Moving Forward Program. With over 241,000 veterans residing in the San Diego Region, some veterans have landed in our jails, many of consequences from post-traumatic stress disorder. Last week, the San Diego Board of Supervisors voted to enhance the Veterans Moving Forward program, by expanding the community care coordination for veterans in the Vista jail. A problem we continue to run into in San Diego...
A few weeks ago, I was honored to be a part of a veteran’s forum at California State University San Marcos. Throughout the night, I heard many powerful stories from different men and women who served in our military. San Diego County is home to the nation’s largest concentration of military personnel, with over one-third of county residents connected to the military. While the event at California State University San Marcos focused on veterans and reducing the suicide rate amongst our military, Oct. 22, San Diego board of... Full story
My office is open. We are now accepting applications from public agencies and nonprofit organizations on ideas to improve neighborhoods and communities and enhance the region’s quality of life. From now through June 2020, Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant applications are available through our county website at www.sandiegocounty.gov/auditor/nrp. In the past we’ve supported groups such as the Veterans Association of North County with the development of their Honor Wall a... Full story
5th District - It’s been an on-going debate amongst my fellow board members at San Diego Association of Governments. Where should we spend our transportation dollars? For those in downtown San Diego and Chula Vista, their main focus was on public transportation. For many of the North and East County leaders, the focus was freeways and highways. Last Friday, the SANDAG board came together on a compromise that fits all the transportation needs in San Diego County. Throughout t... Full story
The future of San Diego's transportation is about to be decided. This Friday, the San Diego Association of Governments will decide where $600 million is going to be spent. From trolleys, to trains to freeways, anything is on the table. At our last board hearing, SANDAG unveiled a draft that I thought focused too much on public transportation and not enough on roads, which is what 96.5% of people rely on to get around. I support an alternative proposal presented by SANDAG... Full story
Last week, I mentioned that we are going through budget deliberations for San Diego County. My job as 5th district supervisor is making sure that our communities receive the resources they need while maintaining a fiscally sound budget. I’m happy to report that in our proposed budget, Fallbrook will benefit greatly. After meeting with groups within Fallbrook and hearing about ways to improve the community, we will be allocating money to two important projects. The proposed F... Full story
I know what most people think: Government is slow and tied down by bureaucratic red tape. While that may be true in some instances, my office and staff team is here to serve our residents. For unincorporated area communities such as Pauma Valley, Rainbow, De Luz and Rancho Santa Fe, the county is the local government and provides municipal services such as roads and infrastructure and law enforcement. Since becoming the San Diego County District 5 supervisor in January, my office has focused on serving our communities. To... Full story
We are headed back to Fallbrook. My staff and I will be coming out to the community Tuesday, Sept. 17, for the second revitalization meeting. The community has been hard at work since our initial meeting in April, creating four subcommittees which have met regularly. At the meeting, attendees will hear updates from each of the subcommittees, which are infrastructure, public health, public safety and housing. They all have noteworthy information to share on the community's... Full story
By now most kids are back in school, the house is probably a little quieter (good or bad) and the summer starts to fade away. For the kids, whether you’re going to middle school, high school or off to college enjoy these days. You may not know it now, but these are the simpler times. Don’t stress over trying to make the team, or getting a bad grade. Try your best and know that there are bigger responsibilities ahead. For the parents, love your kids unconditionally. Soon they’ll be off with their own friends, annoyed at their... Full story
San Diego County is home to the nation’s largest concentration of military personnel, with over one-third of county residents connected to the military. As of 2018, there are 143,000 active duty service members and over 241,000 veterans who reside in the county. As a U.S. Navy veteran, I understand the importance of providing services to folks when they return home from military duty. This is why Veterans Crisis Outreach and I have created a Veterans Forum that I encourage e... Full story
Parks play an important role in our community. The San Diego County park system is one of the best in the country and part of what makes San Diego County such a magnificent place to live. It’s my goal as a county supervisor to provide as many parks and recreation centers to District 5. Below is an updated list of upcoming parks in District 5. The list includes parks that are either funded or partially funded, in design or going through environmental review. In Bonsall, San L... Full story
We often take many things for granted. The beautiful county we live in, the opportunities we are given and, most importantly, protection from our military, police and firefighters are things to be grateful for. Last week, we lost a young man named Yaroslav Katkov, an experienced CAL FIRE Firefighter from De Luz Station 16. Yaroslav proudly dedicated his life to serve and protect our community. Yaroslav was the definition of the American Dream. Having immigrated when he was a c... Full story
We all know housing affordability is a problem in San Diego County. Housing affordability is a complex issue that is a result of multiple factors, such as land acquisition, infrastructure improvements, construction, financing and processing permits. Processing permits can be a large burden of cost for individuals, businesses and developers alike. Costs incurred during the permitting process include staff review time, the California Environmental Quality Act process,... Full story
