On Monday, Christmas Eve, I worked at the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary (FAS), my usual day to volunteer, cleaning boxes, feeding and helping medicate the pets and I helped adopt two cats. One of the adopted cats was to a volunteer who decided to stay to help after she saw how desperate the need was. No one showed up on Christmas Day, so Janet and Monty were just able to give water and food and take care of all the medications for the sick pets. I was there again on New Year’s Eve and we had eight volunteers but there was a l... Full story
The entire North County population, and beyond, is affected by the defeat of Granite’s Liberty Quarry. Why? Rich Loomis (Union-Tribune, Dec. 16, 2012) provides the answer. Where does concrete come from? It is manufactured from the only source we have: rock, which makes a sizeable portion of California. Loomis gives the correct analysis of the warped decision of the nimbys and the totally wrong decision by the City of Temecula people. The long haul by truck, fuel waste, road damage, jobs lost, and the positive increase in c...
Eight years were devoted to halting the devastating “Liberty quarry” project. Looking back, I am awed by what dedicated people, people like you and I, can do when we rise to the challenge. I am the first to say that the Pechanga Indians are my heroes. They saved the communities of Rainbow, Fallbrook and the city of Temecula. I will always be grateful. There are so many other heroes too. Every person who put their life on hold to do whatever they were able is a hero. People who did the best they could to help in some way are...
Political parties divide our nation, play political games against each other, push for their own selfish agenda, and exclude “third parties” and nonpartisan people from the election process. Alexander Hamilton (in Federalist Papers 29 and 85) and George Washington (in his farewell address in 1796) warned against parties/factions. This Christmas I attended a service of carols and readings in Vista, and a traditional service in Fallbrook. The carols from many lands expressed a yearning for joy, peace, and justice. The traditional service included prayers for blessings and peace. It is not enough to hear carols or say a few prayers. Peace with justice for all, in all lands, will not come unless we work for it with effort and intelligence. This is more important today, maybe our most important work. Eric B. Greenfield...
I would like to publicly thank and highly recommend Dr. Alvaro Berrios at the Fallbrook Medical Center Urgent Care, on Elder St., across from Fallbrook Hospital. I don’t get sick often, but this year I got the most annoying cough, sniffles, and body ache, and finally broke down to see a doctor. I saw Dr. Berrios and he told me exactly what I had, what to take, how long I would have it, and he was right on with his diagnosis and cure time. He was patient, kind, gentle, knowledgeable, and a very good listener – so much s...
