On Jan. 8, 2013, Richard Powers, 79, unexpectedly went home to be with the Lord. His passing was painless and sudden. He touched so many throughout his life. Dick grew up in Rosemead, Calif., and attended Mark Keppel High School. He and his late wife, Tina, raised their family in Rosemead, West Covina and La Verne. Local meteorologist Thomas Yealy Palmer, 88, of Fallbrook, Calif., passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at the Fallbrook Skilled Nursing Facility. Tom was born in Kiowa, Kansas to Thomas Joseph and Maude Palmer. His father was a telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railroad and a wheat farmer. Tom had one brother, Richard, and a sister-in-law, Marie. Three of Fallbrook High School’s field hockey players earned all-CIF honors for the 2012 season. Senior midfielder Lauren Copeland and senior goalkeeper Jordan Dues were selected to the all-CIF first team. Senior forward Kathryn Markham received second-team designation. “I’m just really excited. Fallbrook High School’s freshman and sophomore wrestlers opened their 2012-13 season with the Vista Frosh-Soph Dual tournament Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Vista High School, and the results included Shane Davis and Nick Perillo winning their weight classes. Marquis Sumpter was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team for football and was also named as a third team NCAA Division II All-American. Sumpter, who graduated from Fallbrook High School in 2009, was a senior at Western New Mexico University during the 2012 football season. Fallbrook’s Bobby Guerra competed at the 2012 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships swim meet Dec. 6 to 8 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
