  • Is this slaughter worth what we have won?

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

The number of injured in the Bush War has far outstripped the 3,025 dead. The VA reports that more than 150,000 veterans of the Iraq war are already on disability. Dr. Col. Vito Imbascini, a urologist and surgeon with the California Army National Guard, said soldiers who survive attacks are often severely disabled for life. He just returned from a four-month deployment to Germany, after treating the worst of the war wounded. He said that an extremely high number of wounded soldiers are coming home with their arms or legs...

  • Grateful parents thank Good Samaritans

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

Our Christmas began at 1 a.m. when our daughter called in a panic because her truck had broken down in the middle of an intersection. We rushed to her aid, but before we could reach her, Ray and Maria Garcia, seeing her in distress, stopped to help. Ray was able to get her truck off the road and they both stayed with her until we could reach her. Thank you so much, Ray and Maria. We shall be forever grateful for your help and kindness. Happy New Year to you and your family. Paul and Cindy Keck...

  • Voting systems to be reviewed

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

Debra Bowen, installed January 8 as California Secretary of State, has appointed attorney Lowell Finley as her deputy in charge of voting machinery. Mr. Finley is the co-founder and co-director of the election-integrity group Voter Action and one of the nation’s top critics of unverifiable electronic voting systems. He has been a key player across several states in the legal battles against voting machine companies such as Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia Voting Systems. In his new capacity, Finley will oversee testing and c...

  • Americans have limited knowledge of other cultures

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

A man I know is typical of many Americans when it comes to geography, culture, foreign affairs and politics. He acknowledges that he spends a big part of his weekend watching football, basketball and situation comedies on television. Fair enough. Why not, if that’s where his ambition takes him? The scary thing, however, is his ingrained belief that most foreigners are bad and that Muslims are particularly evil. He makes no bones of his belief that all Muslims hate us – and are taught to do so from infancy. When I asked, “Wh... Full story

  • Kids are our future

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

Last month, the Murrieta City Council distributed $62,700 to local organizations to help local residents of Murrieta. Many groups applied but most of the money went to the Boys & Girls Club, Temecula-based SAFE and St. Martha’s Catholic Church of Murrieta. I want to tell you about another worthy cause that is based here in Murrieta that received no money. The worthy cause that should have received some funding is Mentoring Today for Tomorrow (www.mentortoday.org). They are a nonprofit educational organization committed to b... Full story

  • Is anyone out there?

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

It never ceases to amaze me how many interesting and connected people we meet in this town. I would like to know if there is anyone who I could share my brother’s music with who is connected somehow to the music industry. He is very talented (others beside his sister and family think so!) and I just wonder if there is someone here who has the right connections to actually do something with his music. He is a talented writer as well as a musician and singer. If anyone has any ideas, could you please e-mail me at j...

  • Threat to close New School a blatant abuse of power

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

The plight of The New School versus the DPLU raises some questions that aren’t being asked by reporters. Are our taxpayer dollars really going to be used by the county to close a public school with the highest ranking academic performance index (915) of all public schools in inland North County over a zoning issue? County Supervisors, including our own Bill Horn, think local wineries should be exempt from the “burdensome regulations of a major use permit,” but The New School is to be the first public school in Calif...

  • Thank you for the coverage

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

I would like to thank and recognize Julie Reeder and Debbie Ramsey for all the extensive coverage and pictures placed in the Village News during the holiday season in support of Joyful Traditions and the Historic Downtown area. You definitely helped get the word out and in doing so made a difference in the numbers who attended Joyful Tradition events and then shopped and dined Fallbrook. I realize that Joyful Traditions is just one of many community events and groups you help support, not just during the holidays but...

  • The real dirt on charter school opponents

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

The fact that the DPLU has threatened not only to close a public charter school but also threatens a lawsuit should frighten everyone in this community. What’s next, might we ask – the public library? Almost laughable, but mostly frightening. Consider that there is a bigger picture here than some would like to acknowledge. This month’s cover story in the Hoover Institution publication “Education Next,” entitled “The Whack-a-Charter Game,” is a tell-all of the “ground war” going on all over the country on how school boards... Full story

  • Chargers conquered Southern California

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

As the 2006-2007 season comes to an end for the San Diego Chargers, I remind all the fans of an old saying: “What don’t kill you can only make you stronger.” I cannot think of anyone in the NFL who deserves a Super Bowl ring more than Marty Schottenheimer. “Marty, you did everything right, you just ran out of time.” No player in particular is to blame for this devastating outcome; united we stand, united we fall. LaDainian Tomlinson had one of the greatest seasons ever by a running back and we hope to see many more. The...

  • Response time to violent crime too long

    Updated Jan 18, 2007

Last weekend a man died needlessly in Fallbrook – whether legal or illegal – a man died because of our lack of public service supplied by the County of San Diego. To recap what most do not know, a man was shot to death in the 700 block of East Elder while doing his laundry. He died within a block of the hospital, within a few blocks of our million-dollar Sheriff’s station. According to the “other paper,” the Sheriff responded within “five minutes.” Anyone who knows the area – the 700 block of East Elder – knows you are wit... Full story
