  • 'Yes, I admit I hate Bush'

    Updated Jan 20, 2006

There is something quite sad happening in modern politics. There is a hatred of George W. Bush so consuming that it has left many otherwise sensible people with an inability to deal with questions concerning the man and his policies. I have seen this up close and personal. I’m on a number of mass e-mail lists. One of them is spearheaded by a friend who was once a hippie, became a Republican and now, since the invasion of Iraq, is an angry, self-described “refugee from Republicanism.” The innumerable daily e-mails I get from...

  • A modest proposal

    Updated Jan 20, 2006

I have been on a Governor-bashing binge lately, so I thought I would change focus. Not that there is no reason to criticize the Governor, there is. He has proposed a $222 billion bond package and a budget that spends $7 billion more than it takes in. For the fellow that got elected promising to sweep out the spending addicts in Sacramento, it seems he has tasted the spending high, and likes it a little too much. Maybe not yet an addict, but he is certainly starting to chase the dragon. That being said, the Governor deserves...

Schwarzenegger to follow through with his pledge to strengthen the state’s levees and to increase water storage capacity to provide for California’s future. Schwarzenegger spoke during a press conference in front of Nimbus Dam on the American River in Sacramento to emphasize his commitment to strengthen the levees. The Governor offered a $2.5 billion financing package for flood management activities during his State of the State address. Mike Wade, executive director of t... Full story

  • Young essay writer wise beyond her youth

    Updated Jan 20, 2006

Congratulations to local high school students Amber Briggs, Jenny Star and Brandon Chesney (Opinion, 1/5/06) on their essays on the subject of freedom. They are exceptionally well written. Special accolades and admiration belong to Miss Briggs, whose essay “What is Freedom?” reveals a wise understanding of freedom not achieved by most adults. Her definition: “…freedom for me is having the ability to express who I am.” She is perceptive beyond her youth and has set herself on a path of thinking that will likely develop m...

  • Teen editorial portrayed girl incorrectly

    Updated Jan 20, 2006

In regards to the Teen Editorial by Kate Gressitt-Diaz on the tragic death of Athena Harris — What were you thinking, printing such a thoughtless, possibly even vicious letter? I am appalled that someone who admittedly spent only one evening in the company of Miss Harris was given license to expose her so publicly. Miss Gressitt-Diaz seems to have no qualms about letting the community know that Miss Harris used drugs, although she is very quick to assure us that it is the only time she, herself, ever did. Her depiction of t... Full story

All deadlines were being met on time except for the installation of two flow meters, whose delivery is being delayed by the manufacturer, said Trees. • Eat for health!

    Updated Jan 20, 2006

This is the time of the year when everyone is talking about losing weight/dieting. From my years of experience and the work and research I’ve done on this Healthy Living topic, we would be better off eating to better our health, which includes eating to heal, build or maintain stamina and strength than to lose weight. Losing weight is part of eating for your health. The long-term benefits for various diets are difficult for people, often because of increased appetite for energy-rich foods, increased insulin sensitivity and i...

Bats are illegal to possess in California without a permit and they can carry rabies. Authorities are extremely concerned that any persons who purchased or may have...

  • Appetite suppressants: the big hope, the big letdown

    Updated Jan 20, 2006

If only we could just not want to eat. Wouldn’t that make staying healthy so much easier? We’d eat what we needed because it was the right thing to do for our health, like brushing our teeth, not because it was such a rewarding source of pleasure. No such luck. We love food. We’re hard-wired to want it. That’s part of what assures survival of the species, and we further cultivate our appetites for it by associating food with every other kind of satisfying joy from birth onward — maternal comfort, familial stability... Full story
