  • A tale of two hamlets named Bonsall

    Lucette Moramarco, Assistant Editor|Updated Aug 7, 2024

The story starts a year ago when an Orange County resident with the last name of Bonsall contacted the Bonsall Chamber of Commerce wanting to know how Bonsall, California got its name. Newly-hired executive administrator Penelope Richards-Clark did some research and found out that Bonsall was named in 1889 after a local resident, James Bonsall, a retired Methodist minister who developed a fruit tree nursery there. Richards-Clark said, “The Orange County Mr. Bonsall then g... Full story

  • Snacks are synonymous with Super Football Sunday

    Updated Jan 23, 2014

Certain things are synonymous with The Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the National Football League. Certain snack foods are well within that circle since fans have a tendency to group together - either at a private home or sports bar/restaurant - to watch the “big game.” Most fans do not usually prepare a sit-down meal as part of the festivities. The enjoyment and popularity of favorite appetizers and snacks, especially “finger food” go hand-in-hand with the excit...

  • Fire weather watch scheduled to go in effect today

    Updated Jan 23, 2014

RIVERSIDE - A fire weather watch was scheduled to go in effect late today for the Inland Empire and mountains of Riverside County, but not the Coachella Valley. The National Weather Service scheduled the watch from late tonight to Friday evening, saying very low humidity of 7 to 15 percent and northeast to east wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour were in store. A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. It is often a precursor to a red flag warning -- the agency's most serious...

  • Expanding the Super Majority by limiting democracy

    Updated Jan 23, 2014

As a result of reforms enacted in the early 1900s allowing the voters to decide important policy issues, California has long been recognized as a national example of democratic self-government. When elected representatives in Sacramento ignore the will of the people, the voters can rein them in through the use of the initiative, referendum or recall process. This has been true for generations, regardless of which political party has been dominant in the state. Now however, a... Full story

  • Fallbrook needs improvement projects

    Updated Jan 23, 2014

As San Diego draws up plans for the restoration of Balboa Park for the Centennial of the 1915 Expo, it occurred to me that Fallbrook could/should do a project of similar improvement. This is a village that can afford it, judging from the traffic in the parking lots of the banks, and we are mercifully free of supporting a wrangling city government. So, improvements are up to us. We need a committee of dedicated movers and shakers able to raise money and follow through on plans, dedicated to making Fallbrook (and Bonsall) an ou...

Oftentimes, our low income seniors are no longer able to afford veterinarian services, food and grooming that pets req...

  • Will Gregory Canyon be the Elk River problem for North County?

    Updated Jan 23, 2014

The Elk River is the source of drinking water for these nine counties. And it’s not just West Virginia’s problem. The chemical plume is proceeding slowly down the watercourse and will affect cities along the Ohio River and water supplies in Ohio and Kentucky as it heads to the Mississippi River. Sound familiar?
