How high up in the tens of millions remains to be seen,” said Eric Larson, the executive director of the San Diego County Farm Bureau, on the countywide damage. The California Avocado Commission estimates that losses could range between 20 percent and 30 per...

  • An attempt to stop probes into government corruption

    Updated Jan 25, 2007

I really enjoyed Steve Breens’ cynical cartoon (NC Times, 1/17/07), as well as that day’s editorial. The editorial says that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales “performed a stunning disservice to San Diego” by arbitrarily and unilaterally firing Carol Lam, our US Attorney. As a citizen, I object to this administration’s disreputable tactics in what appears to be an attempt to stop continuing probes into corruption in our federal government. After Carol Lam convicted Duke Cunningham, her gift to San Diego County and its citiz...

  • Darrell Issa cast two votes against us

    Updated Jan 25, 2007

In its first 100 hours, the newly Democratic-controlled Congress passed two long overdue bills that benefit many Americans. Congressman Darrell Issa voted against both bills. The first, the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act (HR4), permits Medicare to negotiate with drug companies for lower prices for our seniors. A similar program, long in effect with the VA, has generated enormous savings for our veterans. A recent survey found the VA pays 48.2 percent less for the 20 drugs most frequently used by senior...

  • Thank you, Fallbrook Healthcare Foundation

    Updated Jan 25, 2007

I’m writing to thank the Fallbrook Healthcare Foundation for the consistent, tenacious, creative, dedicated hard work they provide our community, from free rides for seniors and handicapped to doctors’ appointments and grocery stores via the Care Van to researching health questions and giving answers and providing needy individuals with soap, lotions, shampoo and conditioners, clothing and household goods. I recently had the best fortune when I contacted the organization for a “patient advocate” and was referred to Shaun Lemo...

  • Allegiance to this great nation

    Updated Jan 25, 2007

To borrow from playwright Tennessee Williams, upon reading about the Bonsall protests I was struck by “The Foul Stench of Mendacity.” The pro-day worker elements proudly waved signs saying many day laborers are here legally, but to be truthful many are not. The term “undocumented worker” is at best a misnomer; the accurate term would be “economic refugee.” They flee a country so ripe with corruption and political indifference their only solution to Mexico’s poverty problem is encouraging its poorest citizens to cross the bor... Full story

  • Ignorance is bliss for Monday, Crews

    Updated Jan 25, 2007

Like it or not, Iraq was supposed to be a stepping stone to engage Iran and Syria. President Bush doesn’t have to openly discuss his war tactics in detail with the general public if he doesn’t see fit. I believe he didn’t say this at the time because he didn’t want the left wing media (about 80 percent of all media) to make a circus out of his plans. What is a WMD? The term “weapon of mass destruction” encompasses nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, which don’t distinguish between soldier and civilian. After invadin...

  • Pineapple: uniquely shaped and deliciously versatile

    Updated Jan 25, 2007

Pineapple has been known and cultivated in culinary circles since ancient times. Although Columbus brought it back from his journeys, it did not grow well in Europe. Both Spain and Portugal took it to their Asian colonies. However, it was not until the 1800s that pineapple as a commercial crop was successful in the islands of Azores and Hawaii as well as South Africa and Australia. Today pineapple is grown in most tropical regions including Asia, Africa, Australia and the Pacific Islands as well as Central and South America....

  • Preteen Vaccine Week stresses disease prevention

    Updated Jan 25, 2007

It’s better to prevent disease than to have to treat it. Preteen Vaccine Week, a statewide observance set for January 21-27, is intended to raise awareness of the importance of preteen doctor visits and immunization in preventing diseases. The preteen doctor visit is an excellent opportunity for 11- and 12-year-olds to get vaccines they need, including a TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis) booster, meningococcal vaccine and a second chickenpox shot (if they have never had chickenpox). These diseases are s...
