  • Toys for Tots in full swing

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

FALLBROOK- It’s that time of year… the Toys for Tots program is in full swing now! The program began in 1947 by a group of Marine Corps Reservists in the Los Angeles area to help needy children and has spread out to include all 50 states today. Coldwell Banker Landmark Group is the central location for the toy collection drive co-chaired by Abby Elston and Tess Hansford. • "Beware of Reasoning by Historical Analogy"

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

Thirty years ago, in the wake of the Vietnam War, historian James Clay Thompson warned: the primary lesson learned was that the United States should never again go to war in a former French colony located on the other side of the globe, in a land with a tropical climate, against an insurgent force supported by a sympathetic communist regime in a contiguous state.. Thompson acknowledged the lesson’s limited applicability. Pennsylvania Democratic Representative John Murtha, a decorated Marine who served in Vietnam, recently dub...

  • 'In your face, Fallbrook!'

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

It was the ugliest thing that has ever been allowed in the Fallbrook Christmas Parade: The Storm’s rude, inappropriately behaving green entry. It is hoped their baseball games are in better taste. To have something as crass and out of the Christmas spirit as that thing — it became insulting as whatever it was pulled up its skirt and “mooned” the crowds (with children watching!) and ridiculed the community for the length of the parade. With its gyrating hips and bouncing belly it even made fun of people who are overweight. Som... Full story

  • Adopt-a-Family

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the churches, businesses, schools, organizations and individuals who have adopted families from the Fallbrook Food Pantry for Christmas this year! Of the 261 needy families who have asked to be considered for help, 141 have already been adopted by the generous people of our community. Of course, that means 120 are still hoping more people will step forward to help. What does “adopt-a-family” mean? Quite simply, it means providing the makings for a holiday meal and a gift for each child in...

  • RE: Recent letter to the editor by Mr. Dave Reynolds

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

Mr. Reynolds’ letter is, in my opinion, an example of the lowest form of a political hatchet job. While posing as a letter to support a political candidate, the letter stoops to name-calling and to a likely case of slander against Mrs. Dee Lanzillo. When I read Mr. Reynolds’ letter, I had not read Mrs. Lanzillo’s original letter, so I wondered what terrible things Mrs. Lanzillo had written to warrant the personal attack. However, after reading the original letter from Mrs. Lanzillo, I am convinced that nothing she wrote...

  • RE: Prohibition vs. Democracy: the County of San Diego and medical marijuana

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

Kenneth Michael White writes: “As far as federal law is concerned, a person using marijuana at a rock concert has the same status as a person using marijuana based on a doctor’s recommendation.” Ok, fine! Neither person deserves criminal sanction for choosing the non-toxic herb in a nation with thriving alcohol and tobacco industries. By all means, compassionate medical use has been declared the law of California; support it. Better yet-- abolish the abomination that is cannabis prohibition in its entirety. Rosa Parks would...

  • Attacking our children: ACLU urges the rejection of abstinence only programs

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

One of the apocryphal lines from the Vietnam War was: “We must destroy the village in order to save it.” This seems to be the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) approach to helping our nation’s children. The ACLU recently began urging officials across America to reject abstinence-only sex education programs. Abstinence education is vital to reducing out-of-wedlock childbearing, preventing sexually transmitted diseases, and improving the emotional and physical wellbeing of young people. In fact, these programs help youth... Full story

  • Thanks to Go Yard Sports

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

On behalf of the Fallbrook Youth Soccer League, we wish to express our appreciation to the operators of the Ingold Sports Park, Go Yard Sports, for the professional manner in which they ran and maintained the facility this past season. This was a new experience for our league, in that we had all of the teams from the youth soccer league, as well as FURY, our competitive league, using the fields for games. The operators were always accommodating and the fields were well maintained. As a parent of two FURY players and...

  • RE: Prohibition vs. Democracy: the County of San Diego and medical marijuana

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

This was a well-organized article displaying common sense in personal and public opinion. I am an Emergency Medical Technician in Santa Clara County and I understand not only the body’s physiological aspects with marijuana use, but the social views in our community as well. I truly believe marijuana is misinterpreted by most of the public. To Kenneth Michael White - good job.... Full story

  • Don't take God out of Christmas

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

I refuse to patronize, be associated with, recognize or support in any way those who advocate the removal of Christ in Christmas, God in the Pledge of Allegiance or the basic Christian morals on which this great United States of America was founded. Those of you who are responsible for the moral decay of our society would do best to leave and practice your beliefs elsewhere. This is the United States of America, built on Christian principals and the love of GOD. I extend to you all, have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and let the... Full story

  • Fallbrook 'Planners' Deserve an 'F'...

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

..for not doing their homework on State Route 76 (SR-76). 27 years too late, Christiansen of the Fallbrook Planning Group (FPG) proposes a new southern alignment freeway thru the middle of Bonsall - with no access to either Fallbrook or Bonsall residents! The FPG Circulation committee obviously did not consult with engineering, financial, or legal persons regarding the necessary elements of project management: budget, integrity or time: Budget: The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) has allotted a whopping $342 mil...

  • Join me in supporting Bruce Thompson

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

I have never taken the time to write a letter about a candidate for office, but then again, I’ve never met a man like Bruce Thompson, candidate for the 5th District Supervisor. The County Supervisor seat is a position that serves as the head of government for our little community. I have stayed apathetic far too long, as I’ve seen issues like bad roads, traffic, home density, plans for dumps and rock quarries and border issues affect our little village. We are seeing a rapid decline in the quality of life all around San Die... Full story

  • Teen Editorial

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

People seem to have such rigid ideas about what teenagers are like, it seems there’s no gray area. I’m a teenager, and I know this from experience. People think we are either completely sheltered and bookish or that we’re on drugs and off having unsafe sex, instead of doing our homework. Some people think we are too hopped up on our own hormones to realize what is going on in the world around us. Again, because I am teenager, I know this isn’t true. There is a lot of gray among teenagers. I’m not claiming to know everythin...

  • RE: 'Prohibition vs. Democracy: the County of San Diego and medical marijuana'

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

The problem with Prop 215 isn’t Prop 215... it’s the hypocritical atmosphere which forced it to be written in the first place. There should be no question that people who are sick need their medicine. It is inhumane to keep it from them. Regarding our youth, let’s speak frankly...the only thing more difficult than talking with kids about sex is the issue of cannabis. How do we come across to them without sounding like hypocrites, when all we’re really trying to say is that we love them very much and that we’re scared to...

  • Rancho Monserate golf carts on parade

    Updated Dec 8, 2005

On December 4, thirty festive golf carts slowly wound their way around the Rancho Monserate senior community to the delight of the residents. Each cart was unique and so well decorated that the judges, Mary Helgamo, Helen Albright and Dave Fletcher, were having quite a time deciding on winners. Several versions of Santa visited residents, and a pink flamingo sporting reindeer antlers was perched on top of one cart above a sign that read: “Reinbird on Roof.” Loni Thomas, one of the parade organizers, explained that the com...
