The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is currently proposing to restrict local Planning Groups by limiting members to two, two-year terms for a total of four years of service. This proposal is entirely lacking in merit. Term limits developed as a way to control the influence of money on politicians in order to broaden the election process – not just have elections controlled by incumbents who have the unassailable advantages of broad name recognition, extensive fund-raising capabilities, and powerful networks. The...
Does the color green stand for money or green with envy? How interesting that over the past years whatever the quarry opponents do, Granite follows suit. Now that bright yellow signs opposing Liberty Quarry are appearing around town, here come the drab green signs from Granite. While it is true that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” they just may have gone a step too far this time. On Jan. 22, after being tipped off, I drove to some of the areas where I had placed signs (in opposition) the afternoon before. Whe...
Although the new Fallbrook Library has a beautiful building, I hate going there because I object to having my time and labor stolen. Our library has automated check-out and check-in of books which in theory sounds like a good idea until you realize the community is being forced to work for the library for free. We are being forced to do work that in the past an employee would have done. I find this irritating. I find the technology infuriating. One problem is that there is no drop box. Everyone is forced to use the automated...
The Fallbrook Food Pantry is deeply grateful for your tremendous participation during 2011. You provided support as individuals and collectively as churches and faith communities, schools, foundations, businesses, and community organizations who did not want the needy in this area to be forgotten. The facility was packed with families during Christmas week. Eighty-four grateful families received special holiday meals and gifts in our Adopt-a-Family program. Due to your kindness, almost 2,000 toys were collected and handed out... Full story
Reading other folks’ success stories about local shopping, I felt I also needed to put in my two cents worth. Last year, my sister-in-law wanted a floor sweeper. You know, the kind that’s been around for years, and nobody really pays any attention to buying a new one? I decided to try Target, then Wal Mart, then Bed, Bath and Beyond. The first two stores didn’t carry anything like that. Bed Bath and Beyond had a cheaply made, high priced, made in China one that looked like it would last a week at the most. I decided I’d h... Shop Fallbrook? No way! I just recently bought an item from a sports store and after 13 days took it back with my receipt. When I bought it, the box was torn and had been opened, and when I took it back the box was in the same condition. There was nothing wrong with it and I never used it. I was told after 10 days only store credit can be given and I didn’t want credit. So, I was given cash back with a 15 percent restocking charge. This would never happen at the large chain stores and I told them I will never go back to t...

A reverse mortgage is a loan for senior homeowners over 62 years old that uses some of their home equity as collateral. If a person keeps paying the property taxes and insurance on the home, the loan does not have to be repaid until the last homeowner moves out of the property or passes away. At that point, the home is sold and the loan plus interest is repaid and the remaining home equity goes to the surviving owner or the estate. If the home is worth less than the loan, the...

How about growing blueberries in the garden this year? This is a good season to set them out. What could be more wholesome and fresher than the sheer enjoyment of plucking blueberries right off of your own hedge? The berries don’t ripen all at once, so it can be a daily pilgrimage to harvest a cup or two at a time from a few plants. With the advancement of plant breeding over the years, many new varieties of blueberries have been developed successfully for Southern C... Full story
