  • Drivers urged to slow down near Potter Jr. High

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

FALLBROOK — Parents and grandparents of children attending Potter Junior High School, located on Reche Road, ask that drivers slow down on Stage Coach Lane and Reche Road between 7 and 8 a.m. and 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., when children who live nearby are walking to and from school. On Tuesday, January 25, one 13-year-old eighth grade student from Potter was nearly hit by a car as he walked alongside Stage Coach Lane. “The sedan actually brushed the side of his leg,” his grandmother reported. “There are no sidewalks in the area, a...

  • Scout battle is about American values

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

“To those who cite the First Amendment as reason for excluding God from more and more of our institutions every day, I say: the First Amendment of the Constitution was not written to protect the people of this country from religious values; it was written to protect religious values from government tyranny.” –Ronald Reagan The Department of Defense issued an absurd warning to US military installations last fall to throttle back support of the Boy Scouts. The gesture was only “partial settlement” of a bigger lawsuit still hot... Full story

  • Citrus developer needs your support

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

A few months ago I covered the controversy over the Citrus Plaza project. At the time of my first report we exposed serious health and safety violations at the old citrus warehouse. My intention was to foster a better downtown for Fallbrook residents and to prod the developer into securing and cleaning the area while his project moved ahead. Despite being accused of “yellow journalism,” all of the info in my reports was checked with state and county officials and verified by the developer himself. At this time I believe the... Full story

  • Turko is better late than never

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

Yellow journalism is a type of reporting that is sensationalist, flamboyant and even irresponsible at times. I never named Mr. Turko’s show directly. However, he did trespass onto the Citrus property and by all the reports I heard, did a very one-sided show. He could have talked to people who live here and found out that the Citrus property was in much better shape since Larry Gabele purchased it than it had been for the previous decade and they have continued to improve the property. It is true that T.V. news shows, now more...

  • Lunatics in Fallbrook?

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

What is going on with Fallbrook? Why do we suddenly have lunatics “representing” the thoughts and feelings of this community? For Danielle Hooper, jealousy is not a very pretty color to wear. So what? Paul Schaden beat you. It happened more than two years ago. Get over it and move on. Dwelling over this one little issue is most unattractive. As far as Debra Sprague, who is our self-appointed ‘community activist’ and spokesperson, I have two words for you: seek counseling. Stop fretting over what people are and are not doi...

  • We vote the 'Bird Lady' off

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

Saturday morning I was having breakfast with my sister and brother, and for some reason, I was told to read the editorial page in the Village News. Oh yeah, I remember — my sister made me. I started with the Editor’s letter and finished with the ‘Bird Lady’s’ letter. At first, we found the Editor’s letter disturbing, that, in fact, someone lived in our community of Fallbrook with that much time on her hands to spend it making others miserable. Then we read about the target of her attack and wondered what on earth she was so...

  • Thanks, but no thanks for childcare

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

Regarding your story “Supervisors authorize revenue contract” — When I first heard of this grant I thought it was great because it was offering free before- and after-school childcare for my children who currently attend Sue’s Child Care. I was appalled, however, when I was registering my children at the community center in reading the contract stating that I “waive any and all rights and claims for damages, injuries (including death), etc. “Hello, out there, I am leaving my children to be taken care of and no one will be...

  • Parents and guardians as educational advocates

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

“We need to step up to the plate and invest in public education.” These are the words used by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O’Connell, during his State of Education address to local educators at the County Office of Education in San Diego on January 26. There is no doubt that there is a lot of parent investment that exists today in our Fallbrook schools. There are many passionate and committed parents and members of this community who work daily to see that our children get the best education they...

  • Area schools to get

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

FALLBROOK — Automatic external defibrillators are being placed in all of the public schools in Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow. These defibrillators are used to shock heart attack victims back to life. Personnel in all of the schools will be trained in the use of the machine by members of the North County Fire Protection District. The school personnel will also be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The person behind this push to get the machines in the schools is Cathy Fried, emergency communications CPR/AED t...

  • New candidate, same story

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

Here we go again! Rainbow has found, and is prepping, yet another candidate who popped up from nowhere to seek a seat on the district’s board. Candidate Cari Dale, who had attended one RMWD board meeting before declaring her candidacy and has attended one since, spent a good part of a recent afternoon at the district office, doing what? Being given the “party line” to follow? Being fed information about her opponent? Cramming for more questions such as those posed by the North County Times recently? Her answers to those...

  • Hooper is concerned and courageous

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

Danielle Hooper asking Paul Schaden to resign from the FUESD school board is not a crime. Nor is Mrs. Hooper a malicious person with nothing better to do than “fill potholes,” as someone has suggested. Mrs. Hooper is a concerned member of this community who is trying to make it better. Pointing out the truth takes courage, especially when that truth could be conceived as being “unsympathetic”. Truth and emotion. Often the truth is masked by emotion. It isn’t always easy to separate from our emotions in order to look at t...

  • Hooper has no tolerance for disabled

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

I am flabbergasted at Danielle Hooper’s persistence in trying to get my father, Paul Schaden, to resign from the school board. Despite numerous Letters to the Editor in support of Schaden from members of this community and the blatant lack of support behind her and her ‘cause,’ Hooper continues to try and slander the Schaden name. I did a Google search on Ms. Hooper and the results were all complaints by her about something or someone in the community, with the exception of the reports of her loss in the school board elect...

  • Hooper will be labeled a 'crackpot'

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

What is wrong with the Hooper woman? Doesn’t she realize people are calling her ‘The Village Idiot’? I have heard just about enough whining from her about how she doesn’t want Paul Schaden to be on the elementary school board. We all have free speech in this country, so she gets her say and I do too. I would like to tell her, “Good grief, Ms. Hooper, get a life and stop hounding Mr. Schaden about his stroke and whether or not YOU can understand him.” No one else seems to share her problem. The voters have spoken and the fac...

  • Air rules needed

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

It was a gorgeous day today, Sunday, 30th January. I am a teacher and my husband and I have lived here five years. Except for the artillery noise from Camp Pendleton, which they usually inform us of, it has been a peaceful place too. We chose Fallbrook because of its relative tranquility in the midst of a Southern California building frenzy. I am sure many of you did the same. However, I have been rudely awakened as of last October by jet noise coming from the south of us (Palomar Airport?), sometimes every 10 minutes startin... Full story

  • Scampi's fundraiser

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

The fundraiser at Scampi’s Simply Italian Restaurant turned into a warm, energetic and lively evening. The dining room was filled with local Rotarians and residents grateful for the opportunity to give and knowing their money would be funneled through Rotary International directly to the people in need after the tsunami struck. Besides the $10 per person, which will be donated by Scampi’s, we collected an additional $500 in cash. All in all, the Bonsall Rotary Club, where Brigitta Hurd (owner of Scampi’s) is a member, will... Full story

  • Brownies raise funds for tsunami cause

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

FALLBROOK — Bonsall Brownie Troop #4342 and Bonsall Daisy Troop #4382 held a bake sale at Daniel’s Market on Saturday, Jan. 15. The girls made various baked goods to sell to help raise money for tsunami relief. In just over two hours, the girls raised over $245. The money was given to the Bonsall Rotary Club to be taken over to the volunteers already helping overseas....

  • Angels hold big sale

    Updated Feb 4, 2005

FALLBROOK — The Angel Society of Fallbrook’s half-price sale on January 20, 21 and 22 was a huge success. Proceeds from the sale amounted to $5,500, which will be sent to UNICEF to be forwarded to the survivors of the tsunami disaster. Angel President Marnie Mifflin, Jackie Edgerton and Gerri Ankerman, who managed the shop on one of those three days, said not only did the community support the sale, but it was overwhelming. The shop was bulging with shoppers, and as fast as the volunteers were sorting and putting out merchand...
