  • RE: 'Teen editorial portrayed girl incorrectly'

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

I knew Athena, albeit briefly. She was in many ways a typical teenaged girl, but to classify her as being only interested in boys and parties is grossly unjust. Athena was planning on attending college, and she loved math. She was funny and bright, and I’m sorry that she didn’t get to reach her potential. I feel fortunate to have been one of her teachers, and I’ll miss her.... Full story

  • 'Alito v. Planned Parenthood'

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

In recent weeks, Judge Samuel Alito Jr. has been portrayed as everything from “anti-woman” to a racial bigot. His confirmation hearings got so ugly that his wife, in the most regrettable image of the hearings, left the room in tears. But another woman, Margaret Sanger, was present in spirit throughout the entirety of the hearings. Of course, the real issue behind Alito’s hearings was not his qualifications or his fitness but, instead, the issue of abortion. Liberal Democrats fear Alito will push the Supreme Court in a directi...

  • Thank you to volunteers

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

I want to express a huge thank you to the many people who turned out on Saturday, January 28, at the Pico Promenade to help with the elimination of unwanted vegetation along the path. It was a beautiful day and we were able to accomplish our goals of digging out the invasive plants and having a good time in the process. With the help of Jackie Heyneman and Jedda Lorek and their pickup trucks, we delivered five truckloads of green waste to Fallbrook Refuse and filled one dumpster, which was picked up on Monday by Fallbrook...

  • Helicopter issue not about patriotism

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

For those of you who have lived in the (south) Fallbrook/Bonsall area for some time, you may recall it took numerous public meetings, calls, letters-to-the-editors and general complaints over a period of months to convince the Miramar/Pendleton powers-that-be to re-route their coastal (from the southwest) to the desert (the north east) helicopter flights higher — and to the north, over areas less populated. Ultimately, the tax-paying citizens of our area prevailed, and we have had relatively peaceful skies for the past few ye...

  • 'The White Rose'

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

Last night I watched the FUHS production of “The White Rose,” the story of five German university students who were executed in 1943 for their opposition to the Nazi regime. It was very well done with exceptional performances. According to the synopsis in the program, it has “a relevance for our time.” I agree it has relevance, but not for a particular time. Its relevance is for all times. It seemed to me, the play asked us to ponder the meaning of life, or rather, whether life has meaning. The will to survive is the most co...

  • A day at the doctor's

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

I had a doctor’s appointment today. I arrived there a little early. I hate to get there late. I don’t know why. It just makes me feel better getting there early. I only had to wait about 15 minutes; I was the only one there. I knew I’d have to wait so I brought a book to read. There are magazines there to look at but who could really afford that yacht on the cover? And the golf magazines! How many people who come to the doctor’s office know how to golf? Well, my name was called and I went in to the examination room. Why do...

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

An allegation that teen prostitution is occurring on an ongoing basis in Fallbrook drew residents, law enforcement professionals and educators January 31 to Zion Lutheran Church for the January meeting of the Fallbrook Citizens Crime Prevention Neighborhood Rehab Committee. The Village News first reported on this issue January 5 as a result of a 2005 SANDAG survey analyzing the county’s female teen prostitution. Regular attendance has always been one of the most important requirements of Rotary International. Weekly attendance at meetings is a goal set for all members and this is aided by Rotarians being able to “make up” at any club worldwide. Maintaining perfect attendance is a goal for most members, but with busy schedules, there are inevitably gaps along the way. Not so for many members of the Rotary Club of Fallbrook, however. Recently honored for extraordinary perfect attendance were Sam Gorsline (39 years), Regg Fogg (40 yea...
