  • 'The Matador'

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

This movie will catch you by surprise. And I mean that in a good way. It has a very unconventional, independent style to it in its acting, directing and overall feel. It is a dark, more-dramatic-than-thrilling comedy. But for a movie about a washed up hit-man (portrayed by Pierce Brosnan) it had a bit less action then I had hoped for — especially for an R-rated movie. I couldn’t help but think how ready Pierce must have been to make this movie. In almost every big role he has played something close to James Bond. In this one... Full story

  • Do you think of fat as an enemy?

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

Do you think of fat as an enemy? You’re not alone. Most people feel that way. But you need to think of fat as a valuable nutrient that is not only important but actually essential in your diet. Surprised? Consider all that fat does for you: 1. Fat helps control hunger. After we eat, fats linger in our stomachs, making us feel full longer so we aren’t inclined to eat again. That hunger control is the most immediate benefit of dietary fat. 2. Fat stores energy. Because humans, unlike cows, for instance, have more important wor...

  • Grammy nominees Cherryholmes light up stage

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

Anyone walking by the Hilltop Center on February the second around eight o’clock would have heard strains of expertly harmonized Bluegrass music emanating from the building. They may also have heard some strange stomping sounds and a yodeling woman. Cherryholmes, a family band whose album “Cherryholmes” is Grammy nominated for “Best Bluegrass Album,” played to a full house and combined their musical talents with some energetic “clogging.” Sandy Lee Cherryholmes clogged and sang and yodeled her way into the hearts of the... Full story

  • Country quiet

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

One of the joys of Fallbrook is the green hillside surrounding town that just exudes “country.” Amidst the avocado and citrus trees near Live Oak Park, the roads twist and turn past homes that few of us even know exist. In many cases, the views are breathtaking… and pleasantly quiet. Fallbrook residents Bill and Peggy Barnes lived on Riverview Drive until they decided to have a new home designed and built for their retirement years. They found a four-acre site that fit their needs and just over a year ago moved into the s...

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

SACRAMENTO — In separate cases January 26, two appellate courts issued decisions allowing the state to pursue programs necessary to protect streams, rivers and beaches from trash and urban runoff. A Court of Appeal based in Riverside unanimously upheld the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board’s storm water permit for San Bernardino County. A San Diego-based Court of Appeal threw out nine of ten challenges to the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board’s landmark trash reduction plan. The two opinions are j...

  • Valentine's Day gifts of love from your kitchen

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

What to cook for a Valentine’s Day gift? The answer is as individual as your favorite Valentines. Everyone is different. Whatever they would LOVE is a perfect choice! For some this means something chocolate. For others, a meatloaf fashioned into a heart shape says, “ I love you” more aptly than a fancy box of candy. Still others would be touched by almost anything cut into heart shapes and presented with a flourish of pink or red ribbons. Let’s think creatively about heart- shaped edibles: This could include cutting bread f...

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

FALLBROOK — Members of the Model A Ford Club of America, with some of their antique sedans, coupes and trucks, recently took a 14-mile-long tour of Fallbrook. Surprisingly, these visitors readily identified the locations of some historic Main Avenue buildings’ relation to the current downtown layout. Docent-led tours of the Old Reche Schoolhouse by members of the Reche Club, who preserve the building as Fallbrook’s first schoolhouse, circa 1896, were followed by a tour of the Fallbrook Historical Society’s three-m...

  • Building your baby's brain

    Updated Feb 9, 2006

Although well meaning parents are buying brain-building toys, videos and computer programs in record numbers, parents need to first think about building the brain from the inside. “Important brain growth occurs during pregnancy and the first few years of life,” says Bridget Swinney, author of “Healthy Food for Healthy Kids” (Meadowbrook Press) and “Eating Expectantly” (Meadowbrook Press). Swinney says, “There are several nutritional building blocks that are vital for brain growth, but the most important of these is a sp... Full story
