  • Help me stop the State's out-of-control spending

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

The RGP Prosthetic Research Center, a San Diego company that provides artificial limbs for California Children’s Services, is in danger of having to stop providing these critical services for children in need… again. Last week, California State Controller John Chiang warned the legislature and governor that unless they found “cash solutions” by March, California would be unable to pay its bills. A grim reality looms ominously above California taxpayers once again – IOUs. Thomas Guth, president of RGP, told me that if...

  • Thoughts on gays in the military

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

The nearly daily referral to so-called gays and lesbians in the military has, to some of us, become disgusting. Why do I say that? Eighty years ago as a child we had a new neighbor move in with the same-aged boy, in a small town 25 miles from Chicago. Right away the rest of us kids knew this new kid was different, but by age 12 or 13 he was referred to as strange or “queer.” I’m stepping on toes, aren’t I? Two days after Pearl Harbor, I enlisted in the USMC and soon was at MCRD. Eighteen months later was home on hospita...

  • Re: 'Healthcare overhaul defeated due to apathy' [Letter, Village News, 2/11/10]

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

The “real” overhaul appears to have been accomplished by “sophisticated” thinkers who can also read. At 66, I do not want Robert Green or any Green look-alikes inserting themselves into my health care. The “apathy” he speaks of is really “involvement” on the part of citizens who took the time to “understand” this despicable attempt to seize another segment of the American economy by an ever-growing rapacious government. No legislation will trump bad legislation every time, Green needs to sit down and “grieve” in silence...

  • Price gouging in Fallbrook

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

Gasoline prices in our town are higher than the surrounding towns/cities. Don’t shop Fallbrook. I live in Fallbrook and work in Orange County; that means I commute. Now get this, I can purchase fuel for my cars/truck 25 to 30 cents per gallon cheaper in Orange County and Oceanside. I usually buy my fuel from a specific oil company. One would think that the prices would be about the same from one station location to another. Wrong. In Fallbrook, the two stations that carry this name are higher by 30 cents per gallon. Wow! Go f...

  • Putting Fallbrook on the art map

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

The “Watercolor World” reception held Feb. 6 at the Fallbrook Art Center was wonderful, and the show beautiful. The quality and national recognition the watercolor event is getting should be such a source of pride for our community. Both the show and Fallbrook got high compliments from artist, teacher and jurist Frank Webb. The next day, prior to Mr. Webb’s lecture and demonstration, I had the pleasure of visiting with one of the workshop participants (I believe he’s from Canada). He was amazed at all he had seen at the Art...

  • Thank you for Soul Roll Expo

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

As I am, I hope anyone who enjoyed the Soul Roll Expo Jan. 30 thanks Julie Reeder for engineering such an event. Our band arrived a few hours before our set time. We immediately began looking for the stage. We were hearing music, seeing speakers, but… no stage. Jokingly, I said to myself we are going to be performing in the sky. At that very moment I looked up to see that, in fact, yes, we will be performing in the sky (balcony of Elder House). The professionalism at this event was first class. We were checked in and i...

  • Young cello soloist was exceptional

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

I recently attended an exceptional performance in Fallbrook by the Redlands Symphony, which featured the amazing young cello soloist Jonah Kim. I couldn’t possibly be more excited, or more appreciative of this exceptional concert! Under the inspirational leadership of conductor Jon Robertson, it was an unforgettable concert. For me, being present in the Bob Burton Theatre, while Jonah Kim played his cello with this remarkable 65-piece orchestra was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! It seemed to me that Mr. Kim experienced a n... Full story

  • Greek drama performance takes place on Pendleton

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

Many have seen the physical wounds inflicted by battle but only few have witnessed injuries buried deep within the warrior. A special play, “Theater of War” debuted for service members and families at the Camp Pendleton base theater, Feb. 6. As the actors took their seats on stage, director Brain Doerries explained to the audience that the play would be verbally performed without staging and sets. • Mavericks cruise past Warriors, 59-33

    Updated Feb 18, 2010

On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the Fallbrook boys’ varsity basketball team took on the La Costa Canyon Mavericks (LCC). With the regular season winding down, the Warriors understood they had to play their best if they were going to contend with the powerhouse Mavericks, who stand atop the Avocado League. Unfortunately, Fallbrook failed to stop LCC’s potent scorers, and were unable to unravel the Maverick defense as the Warriors fell, 59-33. In the first quarter, the Warriors sim...
