Having been in the restaurant industry, both front and back of the house, for nearly 25 years, I have been witness to some interesting characters, and even more interesting dining room anecdotes. I have worked in four-star establishments, as well as smaller, albeit chic, privately owned dining rooms. Tipping is always controversial. In response to Mr. Johnson’s letter on his ‘not cheap’ dinner for him and ‘the wife,’ I found it quite disturbing that he felt compelled to punish the waiter for what is generally viewed as...
David Meyers needs to learn to read with greater comprehension. First, I did not criticize him for calling Hillary Clinton a blackmailer. My criticism, which I still stand by, was that he made a serious accusation without substantiation. Second, I did not provide substantiation for Hillary NOT being a blackmailer because I made no such claim. In his letter of February 14, Meyers identifies his source: Dick Morris. He says, “Morris openly admits...those allegations against Hillary.” Actually, Morris is delighting in get... Full story
Fallbrook and Rainbow have welcome new political allies in our battle against the quarry mining operation trying to invade our communities. At the large Town Hall symposium Feb. 1 at FPUD, I found two candidates for office, Bob Hamilton running for Congress in our district 49, and Grey Frandsen, running for California assemblyman in our district 66. I spoke with both, and am delighted to report both of these candidates strongly oppose the quarry mining operation on the northern edge of Fallbrook – and understandably so. T...
CA Senator (Rep.) 36th District Vice Chair, Senate Budget Committee Since Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s arrival in Sacramento, the beginning of the calendar year has typically been a time of announcing major new policy initiatives, legislative proposals and of generally hopeful days ahead for California. Yet in 2008, all has been focused on the solemn news that California is in grave danger of fiscal insolvency. More specifically, California faces a budget deficit over the next 18 months of more than $14.5 billion. Our s...
I was pleased to see a reasonable Republican, Jesse Frank Ford, come to the same conclusion (opinion) as many other observers in the 49th and 50th Districts: Brian Bilbray and Darrel Issa are “two of the worst congressman” ever seen. I am sorry to hear that he is too ill to run against Issa; since as a military man, he knows that Issa and Bilbray are among the Republicans the DAV chastises for not voting for increases in veterans’ healthcare, shortened deployments and increased education and military family help. Ford would...
Does anyone but me see a moral decline in standards in the USA? Firstly, I know of no other country that allows the blatant advertising by legal firms (we use to call them ambulance chasers). For example, they ask the public to join in a lawsuit if they have ever been treated for such and such a disease – or if they have ever used such and such a drug. Oh sure, I’ve heard before all the old canards from the lawyers – “How else is the poor man able to seek justice if not for ‘contingency’ lawsuits?” Baloney! Twenty-four m... Full story
Regarding: Article 11 in the Treaty of Tripoli as proof the United States is not a Christian nation: The Founders themselves openly described America as a Christian nation; however, they did include a constitutional prohibition against a federal establishment. Religion was a matter left solely to the individual States. Therefore, if Article 11 is read as a declaration that the federal government of the United States was not founded on the Christian religion, it is not a repudiation of the fact that America was considered a Ch...

Twenty-five percent of the funds raised will go to the Fallbrook Food Pantry. The Pantry handed out 69,000 meals in 2007. The other seventy-five percent of the funds raised go overseas to 80 countries,...
Preliminary reports indicate that the Greater Fallbrook area’s agricultural crops have been spared from any damage due to the cold weather the night of February 14. Official temperatures reached lows of 34 in Fallbrook and Bonsall that night, and while temperatures may have been lower in locations other than the recording stations no reported crop damage has reached the San Diego County Farm Bureau. “I’ve heard no news,” said Farm Bureau executive director Eric Larson. “Nothing has trickled to me.” Although the snow level dro... RAINBOW — After the recent rains, the groundwater levels in the Rainbow Valley are extremely high. The groundwater depth (how far the water is from the ground’s surface) is less than one foot! This means that the septic systems on the valley floor are in danger of failing. Usually, the drain field, the part of the septic system that allows the wastewater from the septic tank to percolate (or soak) into the soil, sits several feet above the groundwater. This allows the wastewater to soak through the soil and be cleaned as it m...

This year, in lieu of their annual Christmas Party, the club voted to donate money to the Food Pantry to help them purchase food to restock their shelves....
If any of us were to read the fine print on many of the contracts we sign, such as for cable TV and many other services and products, we would see that we often have agreed that disputes will be resolved by arbitration. Arbitration means that instead of suing in court we and the company with which we have a dispute must go before an individual who listens to all the evidence and then makes a decision. On its face, arbitration sounds great because it is supposedly less expensive and more efficient. But it also means there’s n...

SAN DIEGO — Homeowners whose mortgage debt was partly or entirely forgiven during 2007 may be able to claim special tax relief by filling out newly revised Form 982 and attaching it to their 2007 federal income tax return, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Normally, debt forgiveness results in taxable income. But under the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, enacted December 20, taxpayers may exclude debt forgiven on their principal residence if the balance of their loan was less than $2 million. The l...

Training Education Research Institute received $1,000 for repairs to their Fallbrook home for mentally challenged gentlemen. “A Curriculum of Musical Experiences” will provide more than...
Recently you met my longtime friend Ann Burckhardt in this column as I reviewed her newest book about casseroles, “Hot Dish Heaven”. For those who love food lore, history and good eating, “A Cook’s Tour of Minnesota” is another delicious helping of her wit, good sense and well-chosen recipes. It is published by Minnesota Historical Society Press: (800) 647-7827, www.mnhs.org/mhspress. As they say, I have history with Minnesota: It was there I met my husband on a blind date, there, birthed our son Elliot, started a cooking s... Full story

Greek food comes with certain expectations. I expect a little personality with my meal. I was not disappointed when I visited The Greek Place on Jefferson Avenue in Temecula. Owner Vassiliki “Vasso” Batzakidou infuses her personality and warmth into everything she does. She brings her grandmother’s recipes into this century but doesn’t forget where she learned them. “I remember the first dish I cooked when I was 13 years old,” Batzakidou said during an interview at her rest...
