  • Some students struggle to access electives

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

The number of elective classes versus remediation classes for the 2007-2008 school year became an open discussion topic at the January 21 meeting of the Fallbrook Union High School District board. Two factors impose restrictions on choices – time and need – but at the heart of the issue is the requirement imposed by No Child Left Behind legislation, which mandates passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to graduate. “We have an incredible amount of electives” says Ruth Hellams, referring to the classes offered...

Thanked for their outstanding assistance to the community on February 14 were workers affiliated with North County Fire Protection District, the Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, California Dep...

A new Fallbrook animal support organization, Senior/Special Needs Animal Assistance Project Endeavor (SSNAAPE), received their official 501(c) status at the first of the year. Establishing a nonprofit organization required a lot of paperwork, along with government fees. • Quarries are necessary

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

Unless you are one who believes against all evidence to the contrary that no quarries are necessary anywhere in the region, the Liberty Quarry location seems to have the most going for it. Can you conceive of a location with the right mix of rock, that is visible to nobody in the county, that has direct freeway access to keep trucks off our smaller streets and highways, can serve the San Diego market without dragging trucks through Riverside and provide Southwest Riverside County and Northern San Diego County road projects...

  • Argue for the issue, not against the person

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

I have seen no reason to respond to the recent letters of David Meyers, as he is such a marksman at shooting himself in the foot with his fusillade of high-caliber verbiage. Should I advise him that addressing issues and facts are more persuasive to readers than argumentum ad hominem? Even absent facts, a good, well-reasoned opinion presented in a civil manner can be persuasive. Meyers voiced his support of Rep. Issa by writing, “It doesn’t take an economist to figure out that minimum wage increasing will only hurt the eco...

  • Send a card to a soldier

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

Do you know about the good thing Xerox Corporation is doing for our soldiers? If you go to www.letssaythanks.com, you can pick out a greeting card and a message and it will be sent to a soldier from you, your family, community group, church – whomever! Wouldn’t that be a nice thing for Fallbrook to do? It only takes a minute to send but will mean a lot to a soldier in Iraq. Thanks, Xerox! L. Hunt...

  • The collapse of America's ideals

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

Last week David Meyers stated, “What President Bush should have done was execute every detainee at Gitmo in Cuba.” That would have been cold-blooded murder, aside from the fact that not one person held in Guantanamo has been convicted of any crime. What happened to the bedrock legal principle of innocent until proven guilty? Dozens have been released because the US made gross errors in their arrest. Some were arrested because of mistaken identity — victims of having the same name as a terrorist. Others were simply the targe...

  • A willingness to serve

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

Thank goodness Mr. Roth’s picture was in the paper, or I would not have realized he’s the man who has been to a couple of the Rainbow Board meetings, staying a half an hour or so, never picking up the information agenda to follow what the board is discussing, looks like he could care less. By throwing his hat in the ring at the last minute on the last day, he triggered a $70,000 voter expense for us ratepayers. Is this Roth’s poison pill? How he must dislike the district! Jerry Walson, on the other hand, announced his willi...

  • A far deadlier war

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

Many letters have been published recently concerning the war in Iraq. I served in the U. S. Army in 1970 and 1971 and know the carnage war can inflict. May I remind us of a far deadlier war within the borders of our country? This war takes over 3,400 lives each day, more than were lost on 9/11 and more than have been lost in the entire war in Iraq. This war is waged against women and their babies. This war is largely driven by an industry that makes hundreds of millions of dollars dismembering these helpless infants who feel...

  • High school group needs help raising funds for children in Uganda

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

Hey, Fallbrook! We would like to inform you of something truly awesome that’s going on at Fallbrook High School. Recently, we joined a program called Schools for Schools, a campaign by Invisible Children. For those who don’t know, Invisible Children was started about four years ago after three college students traveled to Northern Uganda in Africa and filmed a documentary capturing the rebel force’s mass abduction of children. These children were then forcibly placed into the rebel’s army, where they became child soldiers. Af...

The San Diego-Imperial Council congratulated them on joining the ranks of the official OTM Superstar Troops on April 13, 2006. Now, we want to thank and congratulate the communities of Fallbrook and Bonsall. We couldn’t have done it without our “Superstar Community.” Living here in the Fallbrook area, we see a lot of support for our military members stati...

  • County attempting to compromise fire safety

    ProtectSanDiegoCounty|Updated Feb 22, 2007

and FORCE1 This is to notify you that the San Diego County Planning Department is now attempting to compromise fire safety throughout San Diego County in order to accommodate developers. They are officially proposing Shelter-in-Place (i.e., advising people to remain in their houses during a wildland fire) as a new policy guideline for Fire Protection Plans because evacuation is not possible in many proposed new developments. This new guideline is open for public comment until February 26. (Although it was not publicized...

    Updated Feb 22, 2007

Fallbrook Healthcare Foundation SeniorNet volunteers demonstrated lots of heart by providing memorable souvenirs for nearly 200 residents and guests at the Silvergate retirement community Valentine’s Day celebration.
