The Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary’s new home at 230 W. Aviation St. is a sterling example of the progress made by Fallbrook’s community. The center cost much money and is expected to require much more in public donations from goodhearted benefactors to maintain this complex. The non-profit sanctuary desperately needs funding that, as proven by the nature of the new premises, will be put to good use. So please, step forward and give to this very humane project. The sanctuary is carefully arranged like a miniature town whose occ...
It’s not often that I get to chuckle over a bill, but this one just couldn’t go unnoticed. Fallbrook Public Utility District included on their recent bill, ‘Attention Sewer Customers Only,’ to keep sewer charges down, trim your winter water use.’ First of all, how can you be a ‘Sewer Customer Only’ if you are not, in fact, buying water to run down the sewer? Wouldn’t this make you a water and sewer customer? Secondly, the ‘Operations Charge’ listed on my bill is more than the water and sewer charges combined! What I wo...
I am so impressed with the gentleman who owns and operates A Few Of Our Favorite Things in downtown Fallbrook. He is one of the few merchants who even stays open on Mondays here in town, and this with everyone complaining about how bad business is here and many shops going out of business. A Few Of Our Favorite Things is what a hometown operation should be about, in my opinion. At “candy holidays,” Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc., he drives to See’s and buys assorted boxes of See’s candy then brings them... Full story
In Fallbrook we have a new place to eat, Bozie’s, at 232 S. Main Ave. I ordered take-out, and thoroughly enjoyed the best Kobe Beef burger from Bozie’s on Superbowl Sunday. Bozie’s family works with him to prepare the food, and serve the customers. This is basically a take-out establishment, and they deliver; also, they have a few small tables for a quick meal. In the near future, I plan to order food for gatherings with family and friends from this restaurant. Let’s support our new neighbor in Fallbrook! Laura Andrusk...

The business model of not insulting your paying customers doesn’t apply to a Don Rickles comedy performance, and the audience in the Pala Casino Events Center knew that before they obtained their tickets to the Feb. 11 performance. Just in case anyone ended up not being insulted by Rickles, Pala added a concert by Frank Sinatra Jr. to the show. Sinatra, Rickles, their orchestra, and a few audience members Rickles selected entertained the crowd for approximately an hour and 4... Full story

Ruth Eleanor Lawrence Dunlap was 85. Along the journey, there were some potholes, a flat tire or two, but then again, overall, in review, it was a pretty damned good ride! The trip began in the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln. Dad Lawrence was the prison’s farm manager, a post he held through the Great Depression. As war boiled up, detours led the family through Leavenworth and on to the federal reformatory in Petersburg. Hopewell High School (VA), class of 1943; produc...

Before Kathy Waite retired as Fallbrook High School’s varsity field hockey coach, she initiated the practice of team awards at the post-season banquet being shared. Kirstin Mueller replaced Waite for the 2011 season, and the policy of no single player earning team awards continued at the Warriors’ post-season banquet Dec. 1 at Zion Lutheran. “It’s not just one person working hard,” Mueller said. In addition to the awards, the banquet included a buffet catered by La Caseta and videos of the season taken by parents Marty Gar...
The bad news about Jessica Willett’s first college semester is that she missed a couple of tennis tournaments to heal an injury. The good news is that she was the San Jose State University tennis team’s academic most valuable player for the Fall 2011 semester. Willett, a kinesiology major with a pre-professional emphasis, recorded a 3.95 grade point average for her first semester. “I’ve adapted to college really well, and I’m loving it,” she said. “I’m just excited that al...
