From time to time I’ve written about Kenena (Ken) MacKenzie Kelley. We met when I was still in high school and she was a well known professional scriptwriter for General Mills. Ken cooked up a gourmet storm in her private life and I was blessed enough to partake of many meals at her home. Plus, I was one of a select group of women invited to her seminars held every fall. Picture yourself in a cozy cottage-like home situated on a lovely lake talking about foods, cooking and entertaining. Just the thoughts cause me to s...

I was asked a question the other day. A lady has a garden that she puts lots of time and effort into. The problem is that it is going downhill each year – low production, lots of pests, small produce. She was going to a large nursery in North County and buying some organic compost, thinking it was good soil fertility. That is only one component of a broader program needed to build soil in a backyard garden or in any soil. We will begin a program of soil development in this and the next article to really send you on your way t...

Mission Resource Conservation District (MRCD) reminds residents that now that the rainy season is here, it is time to remember the consequences of water runoff. Most people are unaware that storm drains are not connected to sewer systems and treatment plants, and as a result, all contaminants in our streets and gutters end up in our creeks, rivers and oceans. The storm drain system is designed only as a deterrent to flooding, not as a filtering or disposal process. Everyone can help keep the water clean by following the...

For many college students, spring break is the reward for months of study during the fall and winter. As irresistible as it may seem to overindulge in sun and fun, don’t break up the party with a trip to the emergency department. Dr. Brian Keaton, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), says emergency physicians see many serious injuries during spring break and advance planning and common sense should be as essential to a student’s travel plans as a bikini and a boogie board. “The fastest way to ru...
