  • Tips seem to be expected

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

This is in response to the waiters and waitresses who have sent Letters to the Editor regarding tips left after dinner. I am in full agreement that a tip left for good service is the right thing to do. I also agree that sometimes the service is not so great; however, if the [waitperson’s] attitude shows concern for our enjoyment, the tip should show our thank you. Now comes the other side. In our carpet business, we make house calls to show our product, which should be seen in the home to make a selection. Why not tip us? O...

  • Animal Sanctuary deserves an extension

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

I am a 12-year-old girl who lives in Fallbrook and I noticed an article on the front page of the Village News, dated 2/28, about the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary being closed if they do not meet a list of demands. I do not agree with this decision. The Animal Sanctuary is the only shelter in Fallbrook and there are 91 animals that will be left without a home if you shut the Sanctuary down. Not only that, but I have personally met volunteers who dedicate all their time, money and love to these animals. If the Sanctuary does not... Full story

  • We need a Trader Joe's

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

I agree with the letter by Bridget Canchola published in the Village News on February 14. If the manager of the new Fresh & Easy store was quoted correctly, I’d say either he or his boss should first take another look at Fallbrook demographics and who are likely to become their customers. Then, I suggest a return to school for more marketing classes. There are already many Latino food and beverage stores in Fallbrook. My opinion is that what others in Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow want is something more like Trader J...

  • Was another screw-up committed by FPUD?

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

I heard a member of San Diego’s Minutemen inform a group of patriots who were demonstrating at the front gate of Camp Pendleton that something unusual occurred in Fallbrook at or near Red Mountain during the recent fires. He said that 6,000 gallon tanks of chlorine disappeared and implied that FPUD did not know exactly what happened to them. He also said that one FPUD employee he knows who was assigned to guard that area accumulated a considerable amount of overtime. Sheriff’s deputies assigned to every Fallbrook entrance pre...

  • Hollingsworth announces 2008 legislation

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

SACARAMENTO — On February 25, Senator Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta) announced his package of legislation for 2008, including a number of bills that address issues brought to light by the wildfires of last fall and other measures to crack down on elder abuse and real estate fraud. Hollingsworth’s fire-related legislation includes: • SB 1064, which allows homeowners and businesses to carry forward their financial losses from the fires into future taxable years, ensures that those who lost their homes to continue to receive...

  • True cost of annexation

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

I appreciate Peter Surowski’s February 21st article that outlines what is currently taking place between Granite Construction and the City of Temecula. However, the claims of the opposition continue to cloud the facts about this much needed project. I would like to take a moment to address a number of statements that need correction or clarification so that the residents of Temecula and Riverside County can have a clear understanding of the real impacts caused by Temecula’s proposed annexation. Let me be clear, Granite Con...

  • How to save the US

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

As an old-time Republican, here’s how I see us saving the US from a trip down the toilet! First, secure our borders now and halt all incoming immigration for 20 years. After that – we can take another look. Second, place a very restrictive tariff on all imported goods, thereby recreating our own manufacturing, electronic, clothing industries. Third, immediately start construction of new nuclear and other “clean” technology power generating plants. Become independent of foreign oil and “dirty” coal used for this purpose wit... Full story

  • Save the sloophole

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

Faced with a $16 billion deficit, both the governor and most Democrats in our legislature decided that it was time to eliminate the loophole that allows purchasers of yachts to avoid paying sales tax by delaying bringing the vessel into the state for 90 days after an out of state purchase. Fortunately the Republicans stopped this effort when 18 of them left the floor, thus avoiding the need to vote and preventing achievement of the two-thirds majority needed to end the loophole. So you can breathe a sigh of relief when you...

  • The Bush tax increase on all Americans

    Updated Mar 6, 2008

The National Debt increases an average of $1.54 billion per day; your individual share is $30,531 (that’s for every man, woman and child in America). When Bush took office in January 2002 the national debt was $5.7 trillion; now it totals $9.3 trillion – a 63-percent increase. When Bush took office: • One US dollar would buy 1.13 euros but now only buys 0.64 – a 43-percent decline. • The national average price of a gallon of gasoline was $1.09 and now stands at $3.04. • Consumer debt stood at $1.9 trillion and now stands...
