  • Historic Route 395 signs to be placed on I-15

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

CalTrans will soon commence the process of placing point of interest signs before the Mission Road off-ramps on Interstate 15, advising travelers of their ability to conveniently access Historic Route 395 there. This public service has been made possible due to the generous contributions Dr. Cameron Kaiser, the Fallbrook Historical Society, Eric Particelli of Eric’s Precision Autoworks, Bob and Judy Gillespie, Dode Martin, Bob Kroger and Don Gallina made in joining with me to underwrite the expense of this endeavor. Tom C...

  • Prom dreams

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

Fallbrook High School has always had a brilliant junior/senior prom and our school has a unique program which gives underprivileged students a chance to go too. For the past several years, the high school has been able to raise plenty of money and has collected shoes, ties, suits, purses and dresses which are free of charge to those who cannot afford to purchase their own. Last year, tickets were given to those who lost their homes in the wildfires or who were affected by other events. This year, with the economy struggling,...

  • RE: 'Pit bull attack traumatizes senior; pet killed' [Village News, 2/26/2009]

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

Last fall I encountered two pit bulls that would have attacked my dog if not for the help of a local homeowner and my experience in the dog behavior field. The two that were coming for my dog were loose and roaming on Todo Santos Court. They came after my dog, but I was able to protect myself and my dog and get them to go away. I took my dog home and came back to see if they were still around. They were laying in a front yard of a home (not the owner’s) and another homeowner helped me catch them and tie them up. One of t...

  • Karaoke replaced with hip-hop

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

It has come to my attention that the new owners of J.J. “Purty” Landers have changed their mind regarding the Karaoke Night on Wednesdays with Dr. Bill. They have shut down this family-friendly event, much to my dismay! Instead, it is their decision to replace it with an evening of hip-hop. I don’t even sing karaoke myself, but I sure enjoyed sharing the evening with friends and new acquaintances. It was a real pleasure to see families come and enjoy a night out together. To watch the kids build their courage to go up on st... Full story

  • Economic mess likely to get worse

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

The current economic mess is likely to get worse before it gets better. The liberals are quick to blame the previous administration. It is important to recognize a few facts. Most important for the collapse of the financial system is the huge accumulation of debt over the last 20 years, especially the bad debt which existed in the subprime mortgage market aided and abetted by Democrats Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and others. This excess debt, especially the bad mortgage debt, has to be worked off. To its credit, the current a...

  • Now I have a better use for overripe bananas

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

Heretofore I have tossed overripe bananas into my compost bin or into my staghorn plants, both good uses, but thanks to the Village News, I found a better use. After reading the delightful article by Nathalie Taylor, I learned that bananas attract fruit flies, which make good food for the hummingbirds, which are God’s biggest little blessing to us gardeners in Fallbrook. Nathalie’s article about “Mother Hummer” and her baby chicks was a delight. Mother Hummer is Denise Gillen, Fallbrook’s resident expert on hummingbi...

  • Cash-starved states need to play the banking game

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

On February 19 California narrowly escaped bankruptcy when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger held the state senate in lockdown mode until they signed a very controversial budget. If the vote had failed, the state was going to be reduced to paying its employees in IOUs. California avoided bankruptcy for the time being, but 46 of 50 states are insolvent and could be filing Chapter 9 bankruptcy proceedings in the next two years. One of the four states not insolvent is North Dakota. Since 2000, the state’s GNP has grown 56 p...

  • I'm in a bit of a dilemma

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

I am a Republican by every inclination. I believe in tried and true Republican principles – you know, small government, states rights, don’t spend money we don’t have and never live on credit. In other words, do what’s best for America as a whole, not just for a favored few. I’ve never been an “automaton” or a “lemming” Republican, i.e. I don’t feel it necessary to follow the party-line, if that path leads to a policy that is narrow and self-centered. My dear parents didn’t feel like this at all – they supported the part...

It was truly a community effort that netted... Full story

  • Fad diets might do more harm than good

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

Though a new one seemingly arrives each year boasting the potential for bigger and better results, fad diets might actually do more harm than good. According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), fad diets often overemphasize one particular food or type of food, contradicting the longstanding medical emphasis on the health benefits of a balanced diet. Whereas a balanced diet recommends eating a variety of foods from the Food Guide Pyramid, fad diets often place too great an emphasis on one specific group...

  • Morgan takes over as boys' volleyball coach

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

Ryan Morgan inherits a Fallbrook High School boys’ volleyball team which finished 15-7 last year and reached the CIF Division I quarterfinals. He doesn’t inherit 2008 Fallbrook senior and Avocado League Player of the Year Taylor Hughes or two other all-league players who graduated last year. Morgan’s most important goal for the players who have been practicing since February 23 is training in the fundamentals. “My goal, really, is to make sure these guys turn out to be good players,” Morgan said. “We’re just trying to reb...

  • Don't watch the 'Watchmen'

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

To tell a story, one must be conscious of the medium through which one shares it. A novelist builds his story like a house, with written words as its foundation and structure, while a radio presenter uses the inflection of his voice to move it forward. Though a stage performance and motion picture create a viewable experience, the movie actor has the power of the close-up while a stage actor must use more dramatic gestures for his more distant but live audience. In each case, the same story needs to be stretched and molded... Full story

  • 'Cats' a great family experience

    Updated Mar 12, 2009

FALLBROOK — “Take them now. They’ll remember it forever.” It turns out that the Fallbrook Players’ tag line for their upcoming show, “Cats,” is more than just good advertising. Psychological research suggests that experiences make people happier than possessions. According to CNN, that’s in part because the initial joy of acquiring a new object, such as a new outfit, fades over time as people become accustomed to seeing it every day, experts said. Experiences, on the other hand, continue to provide happiness through memorie...
