  • An opportunity for blessing

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

Every Sunday at the Hilltop Center for Spiritual Living, Rev. Guy Williams inspires and motivates his congregation and guests to “change your thinking, change your life.” Because I have applied this philosophy to my own life with wonderful success, I have a suggestion for dealing with the distraction that comes our way from neighboring Camp Pendleton. Rather than dwell on the uncomfortable, why not use it as an opportunity for blessing? How about a prayer for those whose lives truly are being disrupted and even destroyed wit...

  • RE: 'I'm sorry, I don't really care, Jacqueline'

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the response of “I’m sorry, I don’t really care, Jacqueline.” I once got a call from a lady who wanted to complain about the noise of the jets and choppers that flew over her “massage therapy salon.” My first thought was, “Didn’t you know that there was an air base less than 10 miles away from you?” It would be like complaining about the noise of the air traffic in downtown San Diego by MCRD and the San Diego airport! But anyway, thank you for having a pair and defending the people who de...

  • Sounds of training

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

I was so pleased to read the five letters of support for our nearby Camp Pendleton Marines. We live very near the back gate of the Base and off the Naval Weapons Station. I take great pride in telling out-of-area friends and family that Fallbrook is right up against the back of Camp Pendleton so they can locate us easily on the map. When we hear the helicopters lift off at 4:00 in the morning, I always say a prayer for them, that God will keep them safe during their long day of training out over the desert. Those are the ones...

  • Just like a 300-pound gorilla in the living room

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

The 2008 election will, of course, change the balance of the US Senate. In the meantime, ’til then, we are stuck with Lieberman of Connecticut. Let’s call it the way it is – Senator Lieberman is a Jew and as such is fundamentally in favor of Bush’s war against Iraq. He’s not alone in that – most Jews in this country favor our one-sided support of Israel and the voters of Connecticut are no exception. Having failed to win the Democratic Party’s nomination as their candidate in ’06, he ran as an Independent, and with the la... Full story

  • Is Granite Construction gambling with your health?

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

It is self-evident that the one who pays for the Environmental Impact Report – which is due to come out in the spring – and chooses the company to do it will have the report slanted in their favor. Wake up, locals and concerned residents living close to this (proposed) Liberty gravel quarry! Let your “so-called” political representatives know that you are concerned about your future health. Anyone living close to this (proposed) one-mile-long, 1,000-foot-deep open pit gravel mine will be inundated with silica dust blowing fro...

  • Your neighborhood

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

Jacqueline Develle wrote in the March 1 paper, “Why do we have to be BOMBarded day after day with frightening, deafening and house-rattling explosions?” Bonnie Wright wrote in the March 8 paper about Camp Pendleton’s “constant – in one way or another – disruption of the peace and quiet that we should at least occasionally be entitled to in our homes.” Is it possible that these women were unaware that they live right next to one of the largest Marine Corps training camps in the US? Camp Pendleton is no newcomer, as these two...

  • Discrimination is unacceptable

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

April is Fair Housing Month and it is right around the corner. No matter which side of the immigration issue we stand on, we must remember that discrimination is unacceptable. When it comes to housing, the law provides protections for everyone, regardless of immigration status. Each of us falls into a legally protected class: disability, religion, sex, familial status, age, medical condition and sexual orientation, to name a few. Discrimination based on race or national origin is also illegal under both federal and state... Full story

  • Potter Jr. High traffic is dangerous

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

On March 15, I picked up a friend’s child from Potter Junior High on Reche Road. I had just picked up children at Live Oak School and the high school. I was appalled at the traffic maze at Potter. This is a very dangerous situation with serious injury or death just waiting to happen. While going east on Reche and waiting behind an SUV to get into the first parking lot to do a pickup, a lady came out of the same parking lot trying to make a left in front of the SUV. A very young person traveling east quite fast laid a lot o...

  • Quarry 'study' bunk

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

John Husing speaks of better “air quality.” Does adding 1,600 truck trips per day, increased diesel exhaust and noxious odors from asphalt plants accomplish this? Does releasing fine particles of silica dust from blasting (which leads to respiratory disease, scarring lung tissue) and “nuisance dust” help air quality? Eliminate “115,000 lbs of harmful air emissions yearly?” Just build Liberty Quarry elsewhere! “Erasing 16.5 million truck miles from Riverside County?” Does Granite “contend” traveling only to San Diego County...

  • A bittersweet story of a life and death in Iraq

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

The moment Capt. Brian Freeman walked into the restaurant, Charlotte knew he was the man she would marry. She doesn’t know if he felt the same, but he walked right over to her table and asked the person sitting next to her to move. For the rest of the evening he sat at her side, talking, finally holding hands. They fell in love and got married, just as Charlotte knew they would, in the spring – May 1, 2004. They had a child together. She saw an unknown drive in him, the kind that could change the world. “He had this way o...

  • Cannonball safe carries mystery contents to Fallbrook

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

In 1972 a cannonball safe was traded to a new owner for 14 wooden pickle barrels. The safe had been given to a young boy named Tom in 1948. Tom’s father owned and operated a gas station in East Los Angeles back in the 1930s and ’40s. Story has it that there was a Safeway Market next door to that gas station and the safe was originally in the office at the rear of the sore. Before the market was demolished to make room for a larger and newer store, the safe was moved to the gas station to be picked up by the owner at a lat... Full story

  • AAUW hears Holocaust story

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

FALLBROOK — Guest speaker Gussie Zaks recently recounted to her rapt audience of Fallbrook Branch American Association of University Women and guests the harrowing events she suffered and survived during the Holocaust of World War II. She told of a three-month-long march from one labor camp to another where most of the participants perished from hunger and abuse. Photos of the horrors of the death camps, mementos of the roundup of Jews and other reminders of the tragedy were shown and displayed. After five years of s...

  • Microwave cooking - (part I of III)

    Updated Mar 22, 2007

Anemia and lowered immune system Hans Hertel was the first scientist to conceive of and carry out a quality study on the effects of microwaved nutrients on the blood and physiology of human beings. His research showed that food cooked in a microwave oven suffers severe molecular damage. When eaten, it causes abnormal changes in human blood and immune systems. These changes included a decrease in all hemoglobin values and cholesterol values, especially the HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) ratio. Lymphocytes...
