  • Car burglaries can result in credit, identity crimes

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

Though it is not always publicized, car burglaries occur with frequency in all communities. When expensive items or personal belongings such as iPods, cell phones, purses and money are left in plain view inside a vehicle, cars become easy targets for burglars to break into. However, the most problematic complication relating to these incidents involves the theft of debit cards, credit cards and identification, as they have personal information that can be used fraudulently. According to Sheriff’s detective Jeff Lauhon, the m...

  • God included errors in design to give man something to do

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

I am in awe of the completeness of “intelligent design” and the wonders of the universe that we have been given. How insightful of God to have included errors and flaws in order to give man something to do with his “free will.” Earthquakes, volcanoes, ice ages, tornados, and droughts are amazingly difficult conjure up. Just think of all the incredible achievements derived from scientific design. God should be mightily pleased with man’s incredible accomplishment of inventions and discoveries that have helped relieve 5... Full story

  • Visitors from Colorado and Wyoming were amazed

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

I squired my friends from Colorado and Wyoming around the historic Fallbrook village recently and we were all impressed with the variety and sophistication of the downtown attractions. We began at Pinnell Gallery for the landscape art show and met with master framer and gallery director Jennifer Paprock. We were tempted by Dominick’s Deli, but had lunch waiting for us back at our home. It was impossible to pass up Labor of Love, the knitting-and-more store, and we wound up buying yarn and starting a new project. Our p...

  • Profiting from desperation

the way do you have permits for those signs|Updated Mar 24, 2011

You may have seen them as you drive around town – signs that advertise, “Pay your bills” or “Pay off your mortgage.” These are part of a billboard ad campaign by Casino Pauma to promote gambling at its casino. To suggest that gambling is a viable solution for financial distress is, to me, offensive. Some people are so desperate that they may believe gambling is the fastest way to dig themselves out of a financial hole. Suze Orman would surely say, “Shame on you Casino Pauma.” Ronald Coulombe... Full story

  • Quarry impacts would be negative

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

Granite Construction’s proposed Liberty Quarry is a “no-win” for our area. The mountaintop quarry at 1300’ elevation would be in Riverside County but the steep approximately mile long, brightly lit quarry road would be blasted up the mountain at the I-15 Rainbow exit in San Diego County. Quarry impacts would be negative for both counties. Blasting in the Elsinore Fault damage zone; deadly carcinogens from the aggregate crushing, asphalt, concrete batch and recycle plants; diesel emissions from double bottom aggregate trucks... Full story

  • Noticed an increase in SDG&E bills?

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

Has anyone noticed a large increase in their SDG&E bills these last few months? Under the new law going into effect called AB32, SDG&E and other California energy companies have or are applying to the Public Utilities Commission for increases that will double and triple residential and business electricity rates. SDG&E is in full swing in sending out notifications currently on how to conserve electricity, but this law (AB32), which will require electrical utilities to supply 20 percent and now 33 percent (called SB23) of...

  • Do we really need nuclear plants?

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

We have lots and lots of ocean waves that could give us electric power. We have lots of wind power. We could convert fast rivers into electric power. We also could have every house with solar power. Do we really need nuclear plants with their crazy radiators that can kill all of us? We all have seen what’s going on in Japan; are we next? The experts say a 9.0 earthquake here in California would be double what’s going on in Japan. Do we really need a nuke plant? I say no; what do you say? John S. Cardona... Full story

  • An awful consequence

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

Camp Pendleton, the huge U.S. Marine base huddling at Fallbrook’s front door, is not directly referred to in a recent, staggering writing by one of nation’s finest journalists. The writer, George Will, reminds all readers of the events leading up to the Japanese sneak bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. We were not prepared, but six short months later we all but defeated Japan’s navy in the Battle of Midway. The Pacific war ended with Japan and their island possessions devastated. Intervention is today discussed by some...

  • Thanks to Neiman's Collision Center

    Updated Mar 24, 2011

It felt like the proverbial “dark and stormy day” when I took my new Hyundai to Neiman’s Collision Center to get an estimate on a bumper repair. Owner Stan Neiman took a look and asked me to wait a minute. Soon he reappeared with a few hand tools and with several expert twists and taps, the errant seam came together to look like new again. I asked what the charge would be and the answer, “no charge, floored me. We had used Neiman’s in the past and they had done excellent work at a reasonable price, but this was a gesture t...
