  • Makes me 'wannabe' a Southern chef!

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

Truth time: I never wanted to learn about Southern cooking. Well, what I mean is I didn’t want to learn about it as much as French, Italian and other sorts. That is until quite recently as a combination of events came together. First, I’ve found much of my family in the South… and when they talk about food, it sounds s-o-o-o GOOD! Secondly, I was tempted and succumbed to “The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook” by Matt Lee and Ted Lee (published by W.W. Norton & Company). If this doesn’t make a person one want to run to the kitchen...

  • Fallbrook Film Fest: excitement with a capital 'E'!

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

The cameras have stopped rolling and it is now time to sit up and take notice of 80 films from around the world that were selected for the inaugural Fallbrook Film Festival. Chosen from 200 submissions, the juried works are quality pieces. “It was surprising how many submissions we had for our first year,” noted Linda Mandrayer, an independent filmmaker who is serving as the festival’s program chair. “It shows how strong the independent filmmaking community is.” Mandrayer... Full story

  • Avoiding home improvement scams

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

May is National Home Improvement Month. During times of a softer economy paired with the approach of warmer weather, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) wants to remind homeowners to beware of unscrupulous people posing as remodelers. One common issue exploited homeowners have run into is having to pay both the contractor and the subcontractors. The homeowner’s financial obligations should only be to the contractor. Some dishonorable contractors are collecting large upfront payments from residents. When...

  • New story limit language seems acceptable to all

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

New language to address a residential story limit has been added to the potential clean-up and clarification language to the county’s Zoning Ordinance, and the change approved 7-0 March 21 by the county’s Planning Commission is apparently acceptable to all involved. “It’s really a hundred percent better,” said Planning Commissioner David Kreitzer. During the Planning Commission’s March 7 meeting, the rest of the clean-up and clarification items were recommended for approval, but the proposed exemption from a story limit... Full story

  • EIR looms over boutique winery ordinance four-week delay in supervisors hearing

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

In a best-case scenario for those who wish to see the county’s proposed boutique winery ordinance take effect, the hearing at the San Diego County Board of Supervisors has been delayed from March 26 to April 23. The worst-case scenario for proponents is that an Environmental Impact Report will be required to address the impacts of the ordinance. “It was determined that there were some changes that needed to be made to that ordinance,” said Glenn Russell of the county’s Department of Planning and Land Use at the March 21 hear...

  • Foul fowl discovered by Dept. of Agriculture

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC — Food & Water Watch recently released an update of a 2006 report detailing the names of chicken producers who have failed to meet federal standards for salmonella. The names of these failing plants have never been publicly released by the US Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for meat and poultry inspection. The consumer group’s analysis of the USDA’s salmonella testing program provides direct evidence of the danger posed by a policy change that reduces the frequency of testing at some plant... Full story

  • How to quit smoking

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

Perhaps the most telling testament to the difficulty of quitting is the number of people who routinely say “I’ve tried to quit smoking more than once.” In fact, those people are very common, says Michael Fiore, MD, MPH, director of the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention at the University of Wisconsin. According to Fiore, the average person who has successfully quit smoking has only done so after five or six failed attempts. What this underscores is that many smokers are fully aware they need to quit, but the difficu... Full story

  • Does something have to be 'perfect' to be enjoyed?

    Updated Apr 3, 2008

We’re all wired with a fight-flight-or-freeze response that meant the difference between life and death for our prehistoric ancestors. I watched a nature program about hippos and was surprised to learn that even today they cause more human deaths in Africa than any other animal. If your flight response isn’t working when you get in the way of an angry hippo, it’s pretty safe to say you’ll never use any response again. For most of us, however, these ancient instincts can be a burden. It evolves into all-or-nothing thinkin...
