  • Where was this postal clerk?

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

I was in the post office recently in Fallbrook, buying stamps, when the clerk asked me if I was sure I could use a roll of stamps as the cost is increasing. I stated USPS just had an increase. This postman adamantly told me the post office hasn’t had a rate increase in four years. When I stated there was an increase last year, he wanted to argue the point with me. I wonder where he was in January of 2006 when our stamps went from 37 cents to 39 cents. You get a grade of “F” for lack of knowledge and “F” for customer...

We are replacing the children’s gardening shed at Fallbrook Street School that was damaged by vandals in early January. Several local businesses have donated all the gardening tools to completely stock this shed. We appreciate the following businesses for their community spirit: Do-It Center, Fallbrook Fertilizer, Fallbrook Irrigation, Grangetto’s, L&M Fertilizer and Miller Irrigation. We also would lik...

  • DPLU made right decision

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

After reading the Village News story on the Department of Public Land Use (DPLU) decision regarding the Pala Mesa Highlands development (“Opinions vary on Pala Mesa highlands project,” 3/22/07), I am convinced that the commissioners did the right thing in supporting family homes in Pala Mesa. I know that some seniors in the area are against having the homes and would prefer condos or duplexes. That’s a bad idea and only serves the interest of a small segment of area residents. One person commented in the article that the f...

  • RE: 'Residents briefed on local gang activity'

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

Your article “Residents briefed on local gang activity” (4/5/07) was an example of great journalism. Ms. Macone-Greene did an excellent job of capturing detailed information from Detective Joe Montion and Lieut. Derek Clark, Commander of the North County Regional Task Force, and conveying the significant impact it could have on our community, if not challenged. A community collaborative effort is needed to identify these gang members and report their gang activity to law enforcement in our neighborhoods. This will emp...

  • AFS seeks host families

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

AFS (formerly the American Field Service) has been a leader in the field of student exchange for more than 55 years. Each year more than 2,700 exchange students arrive in the US to be welcomed into families, high schools and communities. San Diego County usually hosts some 15 AFS students from Europe, Asia and Central and South America for one school year. March was Host Family Appreciation Month, and on behalf of AFS I want to thank San Diego area families that are hosting students this year. These high school age students...

  • Bush administration is a lemon

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

We all know how difficult it is to get stuck with a car that turns out to be a lemon. We drive it around lying to ourselves and our friends knowing that we made a mistake. So it goes with the Bush administration. It is clearly irrefutable (even to the hardcore righties) that we have criminals in the White House. From the distortions (lies) used to start an elective war against “the terrorist nation responsible for 9/11” to the ineptness following Hurricane Katrina (cronies instead of capable people) to the criminal outing of...

  • Who really supports the troops?

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) was founded just after WWI when over 200,000 wounded American soldiers came home to a nation unprepared to deal with the personal carnage of the war. America is now facing a similar crisis in veterans’ healthcare. At the DAV Web site (www.dav.org) you can input your zip code and find the voting records of your elected representative on disabled veterans’ issues. The DAV lists all the legislation that affects disabled veterans and tracks the votes of the House and Senate. Listed below is a sum...

  • Fallbrook protesters report assault

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

A small group of civil rights protesters in Fallbrook was assaulted on March 31 “by a man who said he was in the military,” according to an article in the North County Times (4/2/07). Reportedly, the incident occurred about 1 p.m. when the group, which included two ministers and an 8-year old girl, was attacked. They were holding a copy of the Constitution and holding the US flag upside down. The Times reported that “According to a report filed with deputies, a suspect – a white man in a silver car – threatened to strike Br...

  • 'Raise' in income fictitious

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

On Sunday, March 4, the Secretary of the Treasury appeared on TV and trumpeted that the “average” US worker has seen a one-percent raise in his income. The fallacy, of course, relates to the word “average.” Here’s a hypothetical case. Ten thousand factory workers in Michigan saw a one-percent loss in relative income due to inflation during the year. Using the number for each worker of $24,000 in wages per annum, the 10,000 workers would have a total income of $24 million annually. Assuming that the cost of living increased... Full story

  • An open letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

Two recent Letters to the Editor in the Union Tribune concerned the dog and pony show going on in Washington, DC, over the dismissal of several US Attorneys. The writers bracket the issue neatly: US Attorneys are political appointees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing official. That should end it! It’s primarily a media event and a smokescreen diverting attention from more important matters. During my 60-plus years as a voter in San Diego County, I have observed two of the worst Attorney Generals in our history. M...

  • Develle, Wright 'take the cake'

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

I must say, in the six years my husband and I have lived in beautiful Fallbrook, I’ve heard of or read some ridiculous incidents. To tell you the truth, most have been quite amusing, but Jacqueline Develle and Bonnie Wright take the cake! Apparently, neither has experienced the anguish, fear or heartbreak of having a family member or loved one sent – or lost – to war. I have two nephews being deployed this month to Iraq. One has been to Afghanistan and leaves a wife and two children; the other is on his second tour to Iraq...

  • Re: 'Okay, you nasty little stone-throwers

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

Wow! I cannot believe what some people will complain about these days! Where do they find the time? In response to Bonnie Wright’s comment, “Does the Chamber of Commerce have maps showing those locations?” Shouldn’t one expect some level of aircraft noise in a town located next to a United States Marine Corps base? When I go to the beach I do not need someone to disclose to me that I should wear sunscreen. Why? Because I know that if I go to the beach I am likely to get burned. At some point, some level of common sense m...
