  • We need to support Fallbrook Hospital

    Updated Apr 18, 2013

I wholeheartedly agree that the community needs to support Fallbrook Hospital. Some years ago, my husband had a motorcycle accident here in town and was immediately taken to Fallbrook Hospital, less than one mile away. Several years ago, my son was in real pain, which turned out to be a kidney stone... once again, Fallbrook Hospital was four to five miles from our home. Several months ago, I needed emergency surgery in the middle of the night and was able to just get up and drive to Fallbrook Hospital. I’d like to add that w...

  • Advice for jewelry repairs

    Updated Apr 18, 2013

I would like to offer some valuable advice to anyone leaving jewelry for repair: take a photo and get a detailed, written description of the piece, including size and color in case of a later dispute. I recently had a very harrowing experience at a local jeweler. I took in beautiful opalescent, white pearl earrings to be reset and when they were returned, they were not mine. The color and size was completely different. Of course, it was my word against the jeweler, and even though I had a witness, needless to say I came out t...

  • Dog Park committee to have booth at Paws in the Park

    Updated Apr 18, 2013

Fallbrook needs a dog park! Our pooches deserve a fenced area where they can meet and greet other dogs and run free off leash, safe from cars, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. Sure, there are dog parks in Escondido and Temecula, but one is a 30-mile round trip and the other is 80 miles. This requires an outlay of time and gas that makes trips to the dog park infrequent for most people and their pets. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to amble over to give your furry friend a treat any time you have a few spare minutes? Our little t...

  • Re: "What's worse

    Updated Apr 18, 2013

In the March 28 issue of the Village News, Mr. McDougal of FPUD referenced my letter which appeared March 21. he stated that Congressman Duncan Hunter has not ignored Fallbrook, but met with business and community leaders, and with FPUD, and hosted a barbeque. It is prudent that a politician meet with special interest groups where meetings are conducted in safe territory and are usually friendly and cordial. What I am asking for is that Mr. Hunter meet with the electorate to discuss the federal state of affairs and answer que...

  • We should pay more attention to the State Legislature

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron|Updated Apr 18, 2013

The importance of state government cannot be overemphasized. Laws, regulations and taxes that affect us daily are a direct result of state legislation. If you buy gasoline, have children in school or pay state income taxes, you are directly impacted by actions taken in Sacramento. To discuss important issues facing California, Senator Joel Anderson and I will be holding a town hall meeting April 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Fallbrook Library, 124 S. Mission Rd. Please RSVP to...

  • High school student saved our house

    Updated Apr 18, 2013

On Wednesday, April 3, at about 11 p.m., a downed power line started a brush fire next to our house on Genista Place. Nathan Benner, a Fallbrook High student and Sycamore Ranch neighbor, spotted the fire from the hill opposite ours. He not only called 911, but drove to the fire to notify us and stayed to help. When I opened my front door to “there’s a fire” and saw it 20 yards from my house, I was shocked. His quick actions and calm demeanor saved the day - and in all likelihood, our house. Thank you, Nathan, you are our h...

  • High school student recovers from broken neck, hits grand slam in his first varsity at bat

    Updated Apr 18, 2013

When Ryan Stewart broke his neck in a March 2011 baseball game, his family and friends were more concerned about his recovery than whether he would ever play baseball again. Two years to the day after that injury, Stewart hit a grand slam in his first Fallbrook High School varsity at-bat. “One of the best moments I’ve had in coaching,” said Fallbrook varsity coach Mark DiBenedetti. “It brought tears to my eyes. I was so happy for him.” Stewart was a freshman on Fallbrook...

The current phase of Parks’ 22-year history working for the County of San Diego is as the interim head of the Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures (AWM). “I’m just trying to keep its operations running smoothly while they’re recruiting for a new commissioner,” Parks said. Updated Apr 18, 2013

ESCONDIDO – When the musical “Chicago” debuted in 1975, audiences and critics were initially put off by its cynicism and unsympathetic characters. Over time, its rough edges have been softened by stage and film directors. But at Welk Resort Theatre, where a new production of Kander and Ebb’s classic opened March 23, director/choreographer Ray Limon has embraced the musical’s darkest roots. “You may not like the selfish, fame-craving characters in this satirical...
