Some students were unsure about what they could touch at the museum but soon realized they could let their imaginations roam....

Among the March 20 actions of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors was the presentation of a report on “Libraries of the Future” for the County Library system, and library director Jose Aponte emphasized that technology won’t eliminate physical libraries but instead will enhance them. “They’re no longer passive places, but they’re active ones with impact,” Aponte said. Aponte stressed that the stereotypical librarian with a turtleneck and glasses on a string wasn’t the image of the 21st century library system. “This p...

Vista resident Megan McConnell, 3, is questioned by judge Jill Gentile as show emcee Mr. Jim gets a kick out of the day’s youngest rider. With her mother leading the way, Megan and horse Copper were the only entry...
What would you do if someone told you that you had to prepare over a ton of guacamole for the Fallbrook Avocado Festival? Would you laugh in disbelief? Faint from sheer shock? Or would you head for the nearest exit? Surprisingly, George Bamber, owner of the ever-popular Holy Guaca-Moly, does not succumb to any of the previous scenarios. Instead, he compares festival day to preparing for a small war. “You better be prepared like you are going into battle,” said Bamber, laughing. “I can’t tell you how much intensity and pre...

At the end of ’06 and the beginning of ’07, I had surgery on both knees. Needless to say, I have been on some serious pain meds. Due to the fact that I do maintenance work, I became acquainted with Ms. Julie Bez at 305 West. The other day, she noticed I was walking with some discomfort and asked me to come into the shop. She wanted to try some pure “oil” on my knees so as to try to relieve some of my pain (discomfort). Though I’m a bit of a skeptic I was willing to try it, so Julie applied three different oils. To my amazemen...
Dear Fallbrook citizens, My name is Scott Thompson and I was born and raised in Fallbrook. I am now attending the University of California, San Diego and studying mechanical engineering. Recently, my attention has been brought to a guerilla war that has been happening in northern Uganda, Africa, for over 20 years. Ugandan children now commute every night to overcrowded hospitals and schools to stay away from the danger of abduction. My home church, Flood, has been partnering with churches in the country of Malawi for many yea...
Our neighborhood has suffered the effects of mis-delivery, expected mail that never appears (such as magazine subscriptions) and, yes, even identity theft. My wife had all of her original identification stolen when she signed a yellow slip to have her ID returned from Social Security. The yellow slip was placed in the mailbox, but the letter containing all of her identification was never delivered – indeed, it was never found. In addition, we regularly receive our neighbors’ mail and they receive ours. The mail is our lif... Full story
Fallbrook Family Health Center is pleased to announce that a local businessman stepped up last weekend to help our community clinic run a safe and clean operation. As a volunteer, Robert Young of Butler-Young Pro Textile Cleaning brought his equipment and skills over on a Saturday afternoon and cleaned all the carpets in our central hallway. They were quite dirty from the constant use and he brought them back from the dead to a very special condition. His methods in our case included a low-moisture method that apparently... Full story
Dear ‘unfriendly’ mayor… The letter that you recently had published in the North County Times regarding Fallbrook’s newest neighbors was not only greatly offensive and very rude but not very becoming of a mayor. As a mayor, you were elected by votes from fellow people in Fallbrook because you came on as a kind and welcoming woman; I bet all those people are regretting their votes now, don’t you think? Just because someone who is publicly known moves to Fallbrook – or anywhere, for that matter – does not mean that they can...
When I happened to turn on the TV yesterday, I heard a Washington “guru” state that “a nuclear weapon in the hands of an irrational President is one of our worst fears.” I’m not sure who he was speaking of, but my Webster’s explains “irrational” as “mentally unsound, utterly illogical and contrary to reason.” Who better than George W. Bush fits this category? Through lies and deceit, he has taken us into a war against Iraq – a nation easy to defeat militarily but one that has shown resilience in the aftermath. Result: an...
In an article entitled “Cultural tension eases at FUHS due to programs” [Village News, 4/5/07], it was intimated that FHS counselor Jaime Miramontes “headed up” the school’s counseling office. Miramontes, one of the counselors at the school, manages the Step Up program with the help of a consultant. We apologize for any misunderstanding.... Full story

If you thought leftover avocados were only good for guacamole, think again! After a visit to the Fallbrook location of Cold Stone Creamery, those who love the taste of avocado are likely to get hooked on avocado ice cream. “It is a light, smooth avocado texture,” said owner John Maurer. “It does not have a heavy avocado flavor.” The elemental flavors, including the citrus juice ingredient, grace the ice cream with a smooth aftertaste. Maurer joined forces with Cold Stone to produce this innovative fresh avocado ice cream. “It... Full story
