  • Avocado: a natural beauty secret

    Updated Apr 19, 2007

Fallbrook and Bonsall spas are rediscovering why the ancient Aztec, Maya and Inca cultures used avocado in their beauty regimens. This primitive fruit holds a hidden treasure of rich natural oils, vitamins and minerals. As our diets are paving the way to an organic lifestyle, many are following the same path with skincare. “One thing that’s nice and unique about avocado oil is the way it’s made, in that it is closest to the oil that our skin naturally produces,” said Craig Lozzi, owner of Transcendent Touch. “It is easily ab...

Eight months and 45 pounds later, she decided she had found a better way to live. “The human body is meant to process plant foods [not meat or refined, processed foods],” she said. Bosco now eats a partly raw diet with the goal of “feeling healthy and preventing disease, aches and pains.” “It is very calming when you eat raw, very peaceful,” she added. Her mood swings went away, as sugar is a depressant to her. Inspired by...

  • Prescription drug abuse paves wide path to illicit drug use

    Updated Apr 19, 2007

America’s war on street drugs routinely garners headlines but much less attention is given to the problem with prescription drug abuse, despite the fact that it is more widespread than abuse of all types of illicit drugs combined, excepting only marijuana. And despite their therapeutic purposes, controlled prescription drugs can be just as deadly as heroin, cocaine or other street drugs. “Americans are so accustomed to trusting the medical community that they don’t have the same sense of danger about these drugs that they...

  • Fried foods and fats (part II of III)

    Updated Apr 19, 2007

Fried foods carry dangers other than those from acrylamide, as we spoke of last week. These foods are often high in fat and salt content and low in fiber and calcium content. These unhealthy, processed foods contribute to the increased prevalence of obesity and chronic disease among Americans. The frequency of consuming these products also decreases the frequency with which Americans consume whole grains, fruits and vegetables, causing a deficiency in fiber intake. High-fat diets also tend to lack the complex carbohydrates...

“Oh, my gosh! It’s so good!” Joni Wilhelm, new owner of The Lace Apron, cannot help but smile when her patrons make such an exuberant verbal testimonial about her very own Cilantrocado Sauce. This type of customer cheer gives Wilhelm the same type of elation as the day she won first place in the Most Creative Avocado Dish: Professional Category at the Fallbrook Avocado Festival in 2004. Before Wilhelm purchased The Lace Apron, the only way people could taste her mouthwatering sauce was when she had her personal chef servi... Full story

    Updated Apr 19, 2007

It’s not too late to enter the Ninth Annual Culinary Competition of the Avocado Festival. I know from personal experience that at the last minute you can create a winning recipe. Catherine, the former owner of The Old Grove Company, is taking time right now to be a super active and...

  • Who's panicking?

    Updated Apr 19, 2007

Last week when Judy called me to write a little blurb about the culinary contest, she wanted me to reassure people not to panic; there would still be time to enter. I was calm and happy then because for the first time since I’ve been involved, thanks to the organizing efforts of people like Kathy Leonard and Ruthie Harris, the details of the contest and the cooking demonstrations had been addressed. The best panel of judges was in place. Their credentials couldn’t be better. Per Nilsen was a chef for the royal family in Nor...
