A terrified, unapproachable Australian Shepherd was dumped and left to starve in my backcountry neighborhood last summer. After one month, she was clearly losing weight, and was reduced literally to skin-and-bones after a 100 degree week. During that heat, she had puppies. She was moving the puppies when she just disappeared, leaving the puppies abandoned. Our hearts were torn when neighbors found two 7-week-old puppies four days later under their house, alive but starving. I took them in, but was broken-hearted about the...
The recent story on Fallbrook A Leer featured in the Village News compels me to write this letter to the editor. Nine years ago, a small group of teachers and parents got together and decided to organize an event that would focus on family literacy and community service - Fallbrook A Leer/Reading Family Literacy Day. We had grand ideas, but no money. We scrounged for donated books for children and received a couple hundred books but felt we needed to buy new books as well. My husband, Nick, and I decided this would be our... Full story
On Easter I attended an orthodox Christian church, saw lots of celebration and ritual, heard lots about salvation and happiness hereafter, but no talk of life on earth and the second great commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” I heard only a feeble “Pray for peace.” Prayer for peace is not enough, not in Jesus time, not today. Most Christians know this second great commandment and the parable Jesus used to show how we should follow it, but we do not follow it, especially not when our neighbor is ugly, foreign...

When a cache of fifty copies of a controversial map created in 2001 surfaced two weeks ago in Las Vegas and were returned to local artist and native Fallbrookian Brett Stokes, he had a decision to make – should they be made available to residents that have repeatedly asked him if there are any left, or not? Stokes, who illustrated the map, well remembers the days after it was originally released, and the resulting anger that came his way. At the time, he made no excuses...
