  • Divided we stand

    Updated May 5, 2011

No one should ever compromise their religious/moral values. In contrast, compromise is at the very heart of a viable political process. With this in mind, our founding fathers established our federal government as a secular entity, strictly limited to the secular powers enumerated in our constitution. The exclusion of the federal government from religious/moral matters is clear. John Adams emphasized church/state separation this way: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to...

  • Fallbrook Film Festival a success

    Updated May 5, 2011

“Was it really as good as it seemed?” The answer is a resounding “Yes!” And for that, the Fallbrook Film Festival thanks the beautiful community of Fallbrook/Bonsall. Visiting filmmakers and celebrities were so impressed with the welcoming ambience of our friendly village most of them expressed a strong desire to return. With everyone’s help, the festival surpassed our expectations. River Village made a picturesque backdrop for the films and workshops, the Friday night party at the stunningly remodeled Z Café was a hit, and...

  • Evolution or Creation: why worry?

    Updated May 5, 2011

I have read with interest the many letters (for several weeks) dealing with the issue of religion. Those who are evolutionists rely on the faith that the processes of evolution we see all around us can be extrapolated to explain the origins of life here on Earth. That is a theory (not proven fact) which they choose to believe and in which they have faith. Those who are creationists see the marvelous creations all around us and believe this could not have happened without an intelligent designer (God?). Again this is a theory...

  • Caltrans choice means gridlock

    Updated May 5, 2011

As a Fallbrook resident I’m very concerned about the back-room politics surrounding the expansion of Route 76. Caltrans has been expanding the gridlocked road for several years and is about to decide how to connect it to I-15. There are two possibilities, expand the current road in a very constricted, “make-do” way that will dump tons of run-off into the San Luis Rey River, or build a new, 21st Century, six- lane version that will accommodate increased traffic for years to come. Both versions cost roughly the same, but the n...

  • Our new library needs to be respected

    Updated May 5, 2011

A few weeks ago, someone kicked to pieces Dr. Jim Helms’ lovely sculpture, “The Casual Reader,” which sat in front of the library. We have already had to repair James Hubbell’s beautiful “Reading Wall” because skateboarders were using it as a skating ramp. We have had to install ugly skateboard stops on the wall to keep it from being destroyed. A fixture was stolen from the men’s restroom. People walk through and across the landscaping as though it wasn’t there. Some of it will already have to be replaced. Our library is...

  • Day of the Teacher is May 11

    Updated May 5, 2011

The California Retired Teachers Association takes this time to honor those educators who have given so much. Teachers often reach into their own pockets for materials and programs that budgets don’t cover. Again education budgets are being cut statewide. California’s retired teachers continue to be focused on and concerned with California’s children and their futures. Please join us in our fight to protect California’s future. California Public Pensions are not in crisis - but there are some politicians who want to use pub... Full story

  • Thank you for helping us

    Updated May 5, 2011

We would like to thank everyone who stopped and tried to help us catch our miniature horse, Bucky, who was loose on Fallbrook Street a couple of weeks ago. I want to especially thank the people in the black pickup truck who gave me a ride to catch up to him. I could not keep up with him since he kept running so fast! I also want to thank the lady in the red truck that got out and helped me get Bucky turned around and headed back toward home. I was so afraid he would get hit by a car but all of the cars stopped and waited...

  • Arguments over religion

    Updated May 5, 2011

The back-and-forth letters bickering about a Supreme Being, atheists, belief, faith, design, and prayer lead me to share this. It seems like we are all missing something. I was approached by two ardent proselytizers one sunny afternoon while sitting in my open garage. Both were clutching bound volumes of the ‘Holy Book.’ After casual greetings were exchanged, I posited a question: “This Supreme One you pray to, does he dwell in his kingdom?” “Oh yes,” was the reply. “And, pray tell, where is this kingdom?” “Why it’s in he...

  • Sourdough is closing its doors

    Updated May 5, 2011

To our friends and long time loyal customers, Sourdough Pizza will be closing its doors and our last day of business will be Friday, May 13. This was not our decision, but a decision made for us by our landlord, who sold the building to a local doctor to use for her medical practice. We have been searching for almost three months for an appropriate place to relocate, but there is nothing in Fallbrook that meets our needs. We are very saddened by what has transpired, but very thankful that you, our friends and customers have...

Thank you to Patty Hornsveld and the Mission Theatre for providing “St. John in Exile.” It was very educational, moving, entertaining, and spiritually enriching. Thom DeRoest was wonderful. • Understanding the different types of mouth sores

    Updated May 5, 2011

Mouth sores can be painful, embarrassing and annoying. Not all mouth sores are the same, however. Learning about the causes can enable a person to find relief or prevent them in the first place. Canker sores Canker sores are common mouth ulcers that manifest in white or yellow sores inside of the mouth. They can form on the tongue, inside of the cheeks, the underside of lips, or on the soft palate of the mouth. Also known as aphthous ulcers, canker sores form for a number of...

  • Fallbrook residents can help prevent pet abuse

    Updated May 5, 2011

April was National Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month, but cruelty to animals is a problem that occurs all year round, even in Fallbrook. Izzie is a kitten that was found in a trash can in Fallbrook in November 2010. A passerby heard her crying and pulled her out. Izzie had gone for days without food or water. About three weeks old at the time, she had had something tied tightly around her neck long enough for her skin to have thickened around it. The man who found her took...

  • Potter field hockey team fifth in tournament

    Updated May 5, 2011

Potter Junior High School’s field hockey team played in a March 5 tournament at Washington Middle School in Vista and finished fifth among eight teams with a 1-1-5 record. “It was really pretty neat,” said Kathy Waite, who had been the Fallbrook High School varsity coach before her retirement this year and who coached the Potter team whose program she helped develop. “We didn’t score much, but we only had one goal scored on us.” The seven games averaged 25 minutes apiece. Although Waite does not plan to coach the Potter play...
