PERRIS - Firefighters today were battling a five-acre vegetation fire in Perris that has the potential to grow to 10 acres, a CalFire spokeswoman said. The fire, near Dawson Canyon Road and Stuart Drive, was reported at 12:34 p.m., and there were 107 firefighters in nine engines, with three water tenders, a bulldozer and two helicopters battling the blaze at about 3:45 p.m., CalFire's Cheri Patterson said. PALM SPRINGS - Two Palm Springs men were arrested today after a fight at a restaurant resulted in one man being shot and another being hit by a rock, a police spokesman said. RIVERSIDE - The Southern California smog regulatory agency is, for the 10th year, accepting applications from lawn mower owners to swap their fume-generating gas machines for subsidized and quiet, clean electrical mowers. Since 2003, some 43,438 gas-power mowers have been purchased by the South Coast Air Quality Management District and sent to junkyards, the agency said in announcing the 10th annual buyback program. OCEANSIDE - Three people were rescued after a boating accident today in the Oceanside Harbor, according to the Oceanside Fire Department. A large wave capsized a family's boat as they entered the harbor on their way back from a fishing trip about 2:15 p.m., which threw the three occupants into the water, according to Battalion Chief Bill Kogerman. A boat's owner and his son were thrown free of the 17-foot center console but the owner's wife became stuck in an air pocket under the overturned vessel and the owner could see her... Full story
CAMP PENDLETON - Explosions audible within 50 miles of Camp Pendleton may be heard in parts of San Diego County and southern Orange County today, as Marine practice removing land mines. Starting about 7 a.m., combat engineers will lay mine-clearing lines, each containing 1,750 pounds of C-4 explosive, and detonate them, according to a Marine Corps statement. OCEANSIDE - Friends and fans of ex-Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, who killed himself Wednesday with a shot to the chest, will hold a paddle- out memorial in front of his waterfront home in Oceanside today. Seau was an avid surfer. A private church memorial is scheduled for Friday, and a public remembrance on Saturday will be held Oceanside High School, where he graduated in 1987.
