  • Church 'left the building' to help those in need

    Updated May 10, 2007

More than 5,440 members and volunteers of North Coast Church said they were “leaving the building” on April 28 and 29 for a weekend of community service. They weren’t kidding. Dispatched to 92 service projects at 54 sites throughout six communities in North San Diego County, this dynamic group of Christians showed just what volunteerism can do. “We had well over 500 volunteers working on Fallbrook projects,” said Larry Van Laar, pastor of North Coast’s Fallbrook campus. “This is the largest single weekend event we have ever...

  • RE: 'I-15 corridor destined for increased traffic' [Village News, 4/26/07]

    Updated May 10, 2007

SANDAG planners have been in charge for nearly 30 years, so I don’t know what Mr. Bonelli is laughing about. Suppose only rail lines had been installed and travel time and inflexibility so bad most would have stayed close to city core. Imagine the house prices if you think the current ones are high! Walt Brewer I read your article with regard to Granite Construction’s proposed Liberty Quarry, and in it is the claims, among other incredulous claims, presence of the Liberty Quarry would save taxpayers $32 million: 1. in red...

  • Please support our troops

    Updated May 10, 2007

If we can help our troops in any way, it is appreciated. Please leave donations at the VFW Post 1924 (1175 Old Stage Road) here in Fallbrook. The troops seem to want cookies, tortilla chips and salsa, potato chips – what they refer to as “Pogey Bait.” What they really need is “grass rope,” which keeps the rats and mice away. Also, baby wipes, mousetraps and ink for a laser computer printer (HP Desk Jet 5740). Let them know that we are here for anything they need and our prayers are with them. Terry Ferral... Full story

  • RE: 'What's an "American" corporation?' [Village News, Opinion, 4/26/07]

    Updated May 10, 2007

In her letter, Anna Monday asks, “Do ‘our’ (American) corporations contribute to the national wealth?” She went on to state: “If they pay taxes at all, they pay at a lower rate than do individuals. Many even incorporate offshore to avoid taxes.” Aha, I thought; at last, something useful to do with the corporate annual reports that pile up on my den table at this time of year: I can use them to answer Anna’s question. So I selected the top six off of the pile and here is what I found: All six corporations are incorporated...

  • Sorensen rebuttal

    Updated May 10, 2007

This letter is in response to the letter and paid advertisement in last week’s Village News from the Sorensen Ranch explaining the ranch was going out of business because of lack of support from the Rainbow Planning Group. It is necessary to clarify the facts involved in the ranch’s demise. First, the property is zoned residential. This was known to and admitted to by the owner. The property was immediately developed into a commercial enterprise without necessary county approval, in violation of the county Zoning Code. Rai... Full story

  • California Grange sponsors legislation to aid volunteer firefighters

    Updated May 10, 2007

SACRAMENTO — Every day, somewhere in California, a life or property is saved by a volunteer firefighter. Out of an estimated 40,000 firefighters in the state, 8,000 are volunteers. They can be found in small towns and rural communities where fire departments are understaffed, under-equipped, under-funded or nonexistent. It’s common for these volunteer firefighters to pay out-of-pocket for their training and equipment. This can be very expensive, but they step up because they see the need and they want to make a difference. Th... Full story

  • Why use the military to do a policeman's job?

    Updated May 10, 2007

If our National Security goal is to prevent future terrorist attacks, we should be doing more international police work. Sending our military to invade and occupy a middle-Eastern country is fomenting unrest and, according to our own government reports, is actually creating more terrorists. Modern Superpowers are 0 and 4 in winning wars fought against insurgencies. Russia had Afghanistan and Chechnya; the US had Vietnam and now Iraq. France was defeated in Algeria and Vietnam; England was defeated here in America. The...

  • Beauty and the Beast: Perfect way to spend Mother's Day

    Updated May 10, 2007

If you are looking for a unique way to spend time with your Mom this weekend, I recommend a live performance. You don’t want to miss ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ I saw it last weekend and it was great. Mission Theater has drawn some of our best talent locally and some gifted out-of-town actors/singers. While I’m not a professional critic, I thought the parts were cast perfectly. Mark Kopitzke, with his beautiful voice, was very funny playing boisterous Gaston. Kalin McKelvey did a great job with his more intimidating role, a...

  • Thank you to Fallbrook Rotary

    Updated May 10, 2007

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Fallbrook Historical Society, I would like to express our sincere appreciation for last Saturday’s “Rotarians at Work” efforts. We were particularly impressed by the planning and organization of the two groups of volunteers: those who painted the exterior of the historic Pittenger House and those who worked tirelessly doing landscaping and brush removal. A special thanks to team leaders Walter Parry, Joe Reavis, Forest Baker and Rick Visser, as well as Dorothy Pratt from Silve... Full story

  • RE: 'Sorensen Ranch forced to close doors' [Village News, 5/4/07]

    Updated May 10, 2007

What a sad state of affairs for Rainbow. I haven’t seen a planning group yet that has improved a community’s appearance and appeal. My wife and I were tickled to death to see Sorensen Ranch open. It was a breath of fresh air to see this family-oriented ranch open its doors. My granddaughter loved the petting zoo and we all loved to browse and pick out fresh produce on our visits. I guess that a gun club, an RV storage facility, a construction storage lot and a truck relay facility add to the country feel of the area. Sor... Full story

America is ready for a change and Hillary is the woman to do it. Senator Clinton is the most qualified person to be President. She has the experience and the plan. • Oil of oregano (Part 2 of 2)

    Updated May 10, 2007

One should be sure to get oregano oil from a reputable company, for it has been suggested that many of the oils available commercially are derived from non-oregano species, particularly various types of marjoram and thyme. Furthermore, there are different concentrations of oregano oil available that are being made with different extraction processes which may involve the use of hazardous solvents. We buy our oregano from Physician’s Strength, Designs for Health, Metagenics and Biotics Research, which all offer very h...

  • Clean, green way to generate electricity approved in San Diego County

    Updated May 10, 2007

It has the feel of the final scene in the movie “Back to the Future,” during which Doc Brown feeds banana peels and other garbage into the Mr. Fusion appliance on top of the DeLorean to fuel it. But what is happening in Vista right now is not in any futuristic movie, it is the next wave of good, clean, green ways to generate electricity without substantial adverse effects on the environment. Not quite Mr. Fusion, but close. Forward-thinking city officials have approved a special use permit that allows Envirepel Energy, Inc... Full story

  • Merry menus for May

    Updated May 10, 2007

It happens every year, so you think I’d get used to it now… I turn my head in late January and whoosh… it’s the merry month of May. Every club that meets has its final fling in May, there are May showers, Mother’s Day (the BIGGIE, of course), school celebrations, graduations… the list goes on and on. And, of course, with almost every occasion there is an opportunity and sometimes an obligation for entertaining. Many seasoned hostesses have learned a valuable menu-planning technique: everything on the menu is NOT NEW! They a... Full story

  • Seaport Village: a fascinating detour after an airport run

    Updated May 10, 2007

My discovery of Seaport Village in San Diego was strictly by accident. I had dropped off a friend at the airport and was looking for a place to have breakfast when I stumbled upon it. After following Harbor Drive from the airport past the Star of India I noticed a sign that said “Seaport Village” and thought it sounded like an interesting place to rest and have breakfast. I wasn’t disappointed – it was a wonderful place for a respite after a hard morning’s fight with traffic. I had breakfast at the Edgewater Grill overlooki...
