    STAR testing has arrived for anxious students all trying their best to succeed. The sections about reading comprehension and mathematics were taken last week, and this week the remaining testing sections will be completed. Students test for about and hour and a half, take a short break, and then test for another hour and a half.     The students at Potter Junior High have just finishing their STAR testing for spring 2005. Star testing is administered in both seventh and eighth grade. The students have been tested in reading, language, mathematics, and spelling. The purpose of the testing is to compare each student’s achievement of general skills with other schools across the nation. Unknown at the time to the players was the fact that if either one of the last two games won by Fallbrook had gone the other way, Oceanside would have won the match.     On Saturday, April 30, the San Diego Pegasus U-15 girls defeated So Cal Blues 4-2 after two hours of grueling play. Fallbrook’s Natalie Ratnavira scored all four Pegasus goals, stepping up from a hat trick (three goals) to a cap toss (four goals!).     Kerry Popko won not only the Pole Bending average but also both go-rounds at the California High School Rodeo Association competition April 17 in City of Industry. The Fallbrook High School freshman won the first go-round with a time of 21.00 seconds and topped the competitors in the second session with a 20.39-second run to give her an average (aggregate) of 41.39 seconds. “I hadn’t taken the average and got both times, so it was exciting,” Popko said. Brown’s Level 2 win January 22 gave her enough Level 2 wins in Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association sanctioned events to move her up to Level 3, and she also won her first Level 3 contest.     Matt Sherman of Myrtle Creek Nursery has been trying to catch the first albacore (tuna) for his fishing club, King Harbor Marlin Club of Redondo Beach, for years. The first albacore are usually caught mid-May. On Friday, April 22, Matt caught his first albacore of the year while fishing on the local six-pack charter boat Pacific Venture, owned by Fallbrook Capt. Chuck White.     Rainbow’s Lori Brown won her division at the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association competition at Norco April 9-10.     The Fallbrook Associated Swim Team (FAST) Water Polo Club’s 14-and-under team is usually a co-ed squad, but since the Junior Olympics stipulate separate boys and girls teams the club split into two squads for the tournament April 24 in La Jolla.     The Oceanside Pirates started off strong, scoring three runs at the start of the freshman girls softball game versus the Lady Warriors May 6.     It has been 50 years since the Optimist Club of Fallbrook held their first Youth Fair. Harold Burchett, the man who developed the idea of the Youth Fair, will be on hand Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22, for the event. His son, Gary, is now the current president of the Optimist Club and will also be present.
