  • Live Oak goes 'live'

    Updated May 15, 2008

Live Oak Elementary School students recently discovered their voice – via campus television reports that took two years to fund, plan and produce. “That was great,” Principal Lillian Perez said following a recent student broadcast, one of several PTA-funded programs that have come to fruition this year. “It’s just a nice way to reach the whole campus. We’re excited.” It can be tough at times, Perez conceded, to cover all corners of the 18-year-old campus that boasts the highes...

  • A piece of Fallbrook stolen

    Updated May 15, 2008

We’d like to report yet another lost dog in Fallbrook – a stolen dog, actually. We are referring to the life-sized bronze retriever sculpture that was removed from its pedestal sometime Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. The sculpture was donated by Dr. Steve and Colleen Aichle to the Fallbrook Village Association and was on permanent display in front of the Avocado Animal Hospital on East Mission Road. Apparently, this is not the first sculpture to be stolen from the Friendly Village’s collection – possibly for sal... Full story

  • FPUD newsletter article questioned

    Updated May 15, 2008

Fallbrook Public Utility District’s recent newsletter, ‘Pipeline,’ is confusing on the topic “Recycling sludge into high grade fertilizer.” FPUD’s statement “Then by heating the sludge to very high temperatures – between 226 and 276 degrees – all harmful pathogens are killed. The end product is sterile granules that can be safely returned to the soil” indicates the dried sludge can only be used as fill dirt. Questions: “high grade fertilizer” or “sterile granules”? (It cannot be both.) Is this investment payback of at le...

  • 'The day Goliath fell'

    Updated May 15, 2008

On that sunny Sunday in May, at the ‘Living Sign’ rally, you could feel the intensity, the excitement! The people came, walking together, by the hundreds, into the thousands. They came with family. They came with friends. They came with neighbors, and, they became allies. You could sense the determination, the commitment to stop this quarry by standing together on that soccer field. They stood for what they believed was best for themselves, for their families. They stood to tell the politicians, “We do not want a quarr... Full story

  • DeJong's letter shows ignorance

    Updated May 15, 2008

In a 31 March ’08 letter to the North County Times, Mr. Pete DeJong of San Marcos berates the public for its ignorance of history – then exposes his own ignorance! He says, “Mr. President Roosevelt declared war on Germany.” Not true! Roosevelt declared war on Japan, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and then, Nazi Germany declared war on the United States. Check it out. Overall, Mr. DeJong’s purpose appears to be to show that the death toll of Mr. Bush’s war on Iraq is minimal when compared to previous wars. Try telling t... Full story

  • Fragmented Democrats

    Updated May 15, 2008

Here we are in an historic neck-in-neck battle between the equal rights of people of color and women in America. Which candidate will be the first to break down the barrier of always having a white male for president? John Kennedy broke the religious barrier by being the first Roman Catholic. They said it would never be done because all good Catholics follow the rule of the Pope over the rule of law. Wrong! Kennedy did it. The Democrats have a chance to make history with another barrier-breaker. Too bad there is so much... Full story

  • RE: 'A welcoming place to pray' [Village News, Opinion, 5/1/08]

    Updated May 15, 2008

I wanted to thank Betty Wahlig-Reynoso for submitting last week’s letter regarding Christ the King’s Saturday night service. I did want to make one correction on her article. The Saturday night service is not a “youth service.” It’s a contemporary service that has the energy with a young worship team, with the same Biblical teachings that you get Sunday morning from Pastor Phil, Pastor Mark or me. So, come any Saturday night at 6 p.m. to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with us. Christ the King Lutheran Church is...

  • Truth or fiction

    Updated May 15, 2008

Whenever I read a letter by Joe Howard Crews I wonder if he believes the nonsense in the letter or is he just testing to see what kind of reaction he will get. He uses gross exaggeration in stating that tens of millions have died in wars defending the Constitution. A little research shows that the Civil War had the highest number of fatalities at 664,000 – of which 213,000 were in combat and the remainder from other causes, primarily disease. A close approximation for the total for all other wars, starting with the R...

  • US supports terrorists

    Updated May 15, 2008

The US keeps supporting – with money, training and supplying arms – terrorists around the world. The US has supported the PLO/Fatah Muslim terrorists in the West Bank, the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) Muslim terrorists in Kosovo, the Albanian Muslim terrorists, and now the government of Naouri al-Maliki, of Iraq, who is closely allied with Iran – which is our deadly enemy. The US funds the Palestine “security forces,” a euphemism for the collection of terrorist thugs from the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Islamic Jihad, Fo...

  • Dare to be one small voice

    Updated May 15, 2008

Regarding responses to a previous letter on risks associated with homosexual behavior – comparisons to smoking and obesity bring to mind the old adage, “There are none so blind as those who will not see.” Smoking is neither celebrated nor accorded special days of silence or recognition in the schools and workplace. Public schools don’t provide obese students with support groups to encourage them to “come out” about their desire to overeat. Obese people and smokers have not lobbied to ensure that textbooks present their unhea... Full story

  • I should have known better than this

    Updated May 15, 2008

Having written letters for many years, I should have anticipated the misunderstanding that would be created by my last letter, “The Constitution is a suicide pact.” Shallow readers generally do not perceive the subtleties of sarcasm and sardonic writing. These are generally the same people who fail to catch a joke, and that applies to both liberals and right wingers. And so it was with my last letter, as witnessed by the numerous reader comments posted online. So, let me put it in straight, literal prose: There are two kin... Full story
