Owners Shizuko (Susie) Miyamoto and Hank Yamada have welcomed diners to their bright and orderly establishment for six years. Hank enjoys visiting with the diners he meets behind the sushi bar and Susie circulates around the restaurant making sure everyone is happy. Yama offers a sushi bar staffed by three chefs who prepare several varieties of rolls. The sushi chefs wrap seafood, seaweed and rice works of art with deft hands. Andy, one of the chefs, worked so quickly that in seconds I was presented a tightly packed sushi...
When Bill Horn was running for the Board of Supervisors for the first time, he visited our community to ask for our support. We told him of our opposition to the proposed quarry at Rosemary Mountain. He assured us that if he were successful that he would oppose the quarry. After his election he spearheaded the permit for the quarry.... Full story
There is a lot of smoke and innuendo floating around the Fifth District Supervisor election campaign directed at Supervisor Bill Horn. As a 40-year resident of Fallbrook and a 20-year volunteer nonprofit activist, I approach this election as I have in the past with a simple basic test: what’s best for the Fallbrook community, the entire community, not a small sector. With Supervisor Horn, we have a clear and consistent track record of his support for our community organizations and community-based goals created by our communi...
Yeah, you can say Monday, May 1, the “Day without a Mexican,” was a good day because there wasn’t any traffic, but whether you like it or not that’s always going to be that way. I wonder: are you going to be in the middle of the sun picking up crops? I don’t think so. You rather want to be in an air-conditioned office. Everyone has to understand, that day was to make a point for illegal immigrants. They’re people just like us, just with different cultures, who are willing to work, no matter what....
Most of us in rural locales are aware that neighborhood schools are often the hub of the community. Often less recognized is the role played by local libraries in the development of student and family literacy within this community hub. The local library extends the school’s reach. Passage of Prop. 81 on June 6 is essential to maintaining this library and school connection. With library use on the upswing and library funding sources minimal, all communities must unite to protect and enhance established neighborhood l...
Voters in Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow will make a critical decision regarding the future with their choice for supervisor in the June 6 election. Not since the incorporation decisions in the 1980’s has the future of our rural lifestyle been so critically threatened. The choice is clear and supported by undeniable facts: Bill Horn strongly supports a new city in the Pala Mesa Valley. Bruce Thompson has consistently opposed the urbanization of our community. Consider the facts and support documents available online: 1. M...
It is important to me who wins the Supervisor’s seat. After reading everything so far, I am noticing two things. First, there appears to be a concerted effort by a few Bruce Thompson supporters who write several articles. Second, the Bruce Thompson information train consists mainly of “BASH,” with little “substance” regarding issues. On the other side, Bill Horn, incumbent, has much information regarding many important accomplishments and plans for future projects. I refuse to vote for candidates who continually bash thei... It is amazing how Bruce Thompson had the gall to say he will provide “sound leadership” and ensure that “taxpayers’ hard-earned money isn’t squandered” (Village News 5/11/06). This is the same Bruce Thompson who has been part of the troubled and ineffective SBA organization that has had financial issues. All you have to do is look at the bogus claims they have approved. Is this what we want for North County? I don’t think so. Another point: How can Thompson be doing a quality job in his current SBA position when he is sp...
Where has Bill Horn been for the past 12 years? He has been in office for three four-year terms and on the eve of an election he suddenly discovered we have an illegal immigration problem… what a revelation! It sounds politically motivated to me, seeing as he is facing some tough competition from Bruce Thompson on June 6. Traffic, trash, crime and infrastructure are the issues that he has real control over; how about starting there, Bill? I understand that he is trying to deflect the public’s attention from his ina...
I was quite interested to read Mike Manchor’s letter about alleged dirty tactics by Bruce Thompson in his campaign for supervisor in last week’s paper. I have been watching the campaign for supervisor closely and have noted with interest the reports in the press and on the news regarding some questionable things that Bill Horn has been involved in. Just because Mr. Horn shot himself in the foot, I don’t see how you can make the leap that this constitutes dirty campaign tactics by Mr. Thompson. Mr. Horn has only himself to bl...
“We the People” have heard the President’s speech on Immigration and our National Security. We still do not think he gets it. First Mr. President, “We the People,” do not think the office of the President is a diplomatic assignment. We want leadership, not compromise. If we wanted an endless search for common ground we would petition the United Nations to secure our borders. Stop trying to find a compromise and start leading your nation. We want secure borders not security border watchers dressed in National Guard uniforms....
Horn must go. Let June 6 be Supervisor Bill Horn’s final arrogant and ethically challenged day. For years Horn’s chief of staff was also his main fundraiser. Leave checks or cash at office door. So when it was discovered by the media that she earned a salary to flush money out of developers, in addition to her taxpayer-paid salary as fulltime chief of staff, they both feigned shock at the media blitz and public outrage. So they transferred fundraising to her live-in daughter. Ethical blindness. Multiple media inv...
Supervisor Bill Horn has been a steady, consistent supporter of Fallbrook (and its numerous volunteer groups) and the Fallbrook Community Planning Group (FCPG), and that’s why I am supporting him in this election. With my 14 years on the FCPG, I have had the opportunity to personally see how much Bill Horn has done for this community. He has supported us in many ways, some obvious and public, and some not so well known. Mr. Horn has found ways to finance many of our more important community projects including the H... Full story
I am writing on behalf of the Friends of the Fallbrook Library to ask for your participation in the upcoming June 6 election. On that day, Proposition 81’s approval by the voters of California will provide much-needed funds for new library construction and hopefully for the future building plans of the Fallbrook Library. Our recent newsletter to you described the advantages of this bond act which will provide $600 million of which $300 million is designated for communities not approved under the previous Proposition 14. WE a...
The Fallbrook Public Library is the cultural center of our friendly village and is the cornerstone of the proposed Town Center sponsored by the Village Association. But our present facility falls far short of Fallbrook needs. First, it is less than half the size required for a population of 48,000 and growing. The Fallbrook facility is one of the busiest libraries in San Diego County. Second, its design does not meet the needs of a library for the 21st century. New libraries will be more than books and magazines. There will b...
Has anybody asked the housing developers where the electricity will come from to power up their new developments? Do you really think that there is enough energy left in those three wires going across Interstate 15 for all those houses, industrial parks and college? Have any of the other “projects” paid SDG&E to do a System Impact Study? We did. Maybe they should too. If you would like to learn more about our company, tune into our Web site at www.envirepel.com....
We want to thank the Fallbrook High School ASB for the great Prom they organized for the senior citizens April 28. Miss Alyssa Santos originated the idea; thank you, Alyssa, for your effort. It wasn’t only the lovely decorations, music and food but their youthful enthusiasm and friendliness that we enjoyed. The ritual of having our souvenir photos made was an added touch. We have told our friends what a great time we had and they would like to attend if it is given next year. It also brought back fond memories of the Proms w... Full story
I just wanted to say how excited our family is about the new proposed San Luis Rey River Regional Park. This park will be a wonderful addition not only to our residents and their families but also to the many visitors who come to the North San Diego County area. We are really looking forward to the many trails and educational areas for walkers, horses and cyclists. There will be displays of our past peoples and their histories along with picnic and recreation areas. And, all of this will be nestled among the beautiful trees...
The youth of the Fallbrook 1st Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their leaders very much appreciate the unselfish donations made by the wonderful businesses in Fallbrook and thank them for their generous contributions. Because of their support we were able to raise the necessary funds for our Summer Youth Program for all boys and girls ages 12-18 years. Thank you to Albertsons, Major Market, Hank’s Hardware, The Jewelry Connection, Ahrend Studios and The Good Earth Nursery....
Dear Fallbrook Community, I just had to write and thank the students, staff and parent volunteers of FUHS for a truly memorable 2006 Junior/Senior Prom. Students, staff and parent volunteers of FUHS spent an evening to remember aboard the USS Midway in San Diego. The crew of the Midway complemented FUHS students for their outstanding behavior, their respectful demeanor, their dress and manners. Thank you to everyone involved with the FUHS ASB who helped to make this evening a night to remember for everyone in attendance. It... Full story
To the gentleman in the green jeep on DeLuz Road: Thank you most sincerely for all the work you do keeping DeLuz Road and Sandia Creek Drive clean and trash-free. I see you two to three times a week, in the mornings, picking up trash along these two roads. I have noticed that you have been cleaning up these areas for over a year. Your efforts are very much appreciated. People traveling to Sandia Creek or to the Santa Margarita trailhead frequently use these roads and unfortunately there is often a great deal of trash:...
Parents, be forewarned. Shopping at Albertsons could now be harmful for your children. The store has installed TV monitors at the check-out lines and in the produce and meat departments. The programming has gone from bad (irritating) to worse (harmful for children). It seems we were being lulled into acceptance of the TVs. Albertsons is now showing ads for movies and TV programs that are inappropriate for children. As a mom, I have paid close attention to the TV monitors. The ads contain inappropriate and scary images for...
Okay, “they did their thing,” and many said, “They need us as much as we need them!” Oh, yeah? Well, I for one do not believe that. The employers of illegals are taking jobs away from American people who can and would do most all jobs that are stolen by illegal immigrants who will work for less. That cheapens the marketplace and shadows the taxes not being paid and employers should be ashamed to perform a disservice to America that provides access to their business or household! Don’t fool yourself. A vast percentag...
The members of the Board of Directors of the Fallbrook Food Pantry wish to thank our Postmistress, Vickie Garcia, and the letter carriers of the Fallbrook Post Office for their successful food drive of Saturday, May 13. We also thank the many people who participated by leaving bags of groceries at their mailboxes that day. As of 6:00 Saturday evening, the food pantry had received nine truckloads of approximately 1,000 pounds each of food collected by the letter carriers. Letter carrier Tony Ablong announced that they still... Full story
MYTH: Illegal immigrants have a right to come here. It is our Christian duty to provide hospitality. Nearly two-thirds of the 32.5 million foreign-born people living in the United States entered this country legally, and the United States has more legal immigrants than any other country in the world. That’s hardly poor hospitality, and no bill before Congress that has a chance of becoming law would change this nation’s hospitality. But it is poor hospitality to say to the nearly 22 million legal US immigrants who waited in li... Full story
