With the help of eye witnesses at the scene who noted the license plate number of the 1989 Chevrolet Astro van that Jimenez was driving, officers were able to track down the registered owner who explained the van had been loaned to Jimenez, a friend. Updated May 22, 2008

Although the County of San Diego has an open space program, the goal of that program is to preserve habitat and wildlife, and uncontrolled wildfires threaten that habitat and wildlife as well as homes and human life. A 5-0 San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote May 14 directed the county’s Chief Administrative Officer to develop a comprehensive vegetation management program which would include prescribed burns as part of the county’s land management plans for county-owned or Multiple Species Conservation Program lan... Full story

  • De Luz oversight nixed by planning group

    Updated May 22, 2008

Concerns raised by all sides prompted Fallbrook Community Planning Group members to decide not to take an oversight role in rural, rugged De Luz. The unanimous vote to recommend that the planning group’s jurisdiction not be expanded ended months of study, doubts and concerns. The debate seemed easy to resolve in the end, as many De Luz residents indicated they want to remain independent and several planning group members said they are satisfied with the status quo. “I have never supported the idea of De Luz coming under the... Full story

  • New educational program garners rave reviews

    Updated May 22, 2008

At Vallecitos School in Rainbow, fourth grade students have had a unique opportunity to be part of a revolutionary educational program championed by Fallbrook resident Professor Cliff Sumrall. On May 23, school administrators invited visitors to witness a sample of the incredible progress the fourth grade has achieved in a relatively short time. Since its inception, at the start of the 2007-2008 school year, these children have been immersed in a multidimensional approach to education. It involves utilizing the art of oratory... Full story

  • Rosenbaum commissioner of Senior Softball League

    Updated May 22, 2008

During Stephen Rosenbaum’s youth in Baltimore, like any young boy, he had enormous enthusiasm for sports. “I played softball every day during the summer and tackle football (without equipment) every day during the winter,” said Rosenbaum, commissioner of the Fallbrook Senior Softball League. Getting a team together was easy back in the day, said Rosenbaum. All it took was a phone call and about 20 guys would congregate at the schoolyard for a game. Reminiscing about those... Full story

Fourteen-year-old Thomas*, a student at Potter Junior High School, says his mom, Diane Fulcher, is the best! He won the middle school division top prize of a Sony laptop computer, other gifts and engraved awards, which were presented to him at a special luncheon event May 10 at the...

  • Support Mission Theater

    Updated May 22, 2008

My family recently had the privilege of working with Patti and Jennifer Hornsveld of CAST Productions on the “Sound of Music,” which is currently playing at the Mission Theater. This family-owned, professionally run operation draws exceptional talent to Fallbrook from all over the San Diego area. This cultural asset anchors the north side of town and the ticket price is a tremendous value for the truly spectacular talent seen up close and in-person. So, why don’t more Fallbrookians patronize this local treasure? Inste...

  • An outstanding education

    Updated May 22, 2008

One of the best kept secrets in Fallbrook is Pam’s Preschool and Kindergarten! My daughter has been attending Miss Pam’s for three years (preschool, kindergarten and first grade) and she and her classmates are off the charts in academics. My daughter is reading words like “enthusiastic” and “specimen” with no problem at all, her math skills are awesome and her vocabulary is outstanding. The school is a small school run out of Pam Long’s home with a capacity of six preschoolers and eight kindergarteners/fir...

  • If McCain had become president eight years ago

    Updated May 22, 2008

I like Sen. John McCain. I believe him to be an honorable man – though not liked by the party leaders or the radical Christian Right-wing. But that’s good – I don’t like the way our party has become so intolerant of everything but the bottom-line either! Unfortunately for poor John, he’s running at the wrong time. He should have won the nomination eight years ago but was outfoxed by the clique from Texas. Just think how much better we’d all be if he had become President at that time. In the first place, assuming that 9-11 w...

SACRAMENTO — Assemblyman Joel Anderson (R-El Cajon) has joint-authored Senate Bill 691, introduced by Senator Charles Calderon (D-Montebello), which will take strong action to stop scrap metal theft. “Whether it’s stolen fire hydrant caps, stripped machinery or gutted automobile engines, many municipalities, businesses and citizens are being plagued by this expensive crime,” said Anderson. Scrap metal theft costs private property owners and governments millions of dollars each year. After receiving input from public agencie...

  • We are no longer a sleepy, rural town

    Updated May 22, 2008

Thank you, Village News, for your recent coverage of Fallbrook’s gang sweep. Your articles’ thoroughness and undiluted facts are greatly appreciated. Lt. Alex Dominguez’s sheriff’s-eye view on May 8 was a wonderful bonus. Your mention of drug cartels and the mafia was chilling. Shocking, really. We deeply appreciate the truth, anyway. If shock is what it takes, then give it to us. We are no longer a sleepy, rural town. Darkness reigns, preying on the young and old alike. Printed, unsanitized media reports shine a light o...

  • Renshaw should be recognized also

    Updated May 22, 2008

In your last issue [5/15/08], you ran a front page article congratulating Dennis Allen for his recent election as a delegate to the California School Board Association (CSBA). Dennis certainly should be congratulated. The Fallbrook Union Elementary School District (FUESD) Board of Governors also voted for Dennis. But, the FUESD Board of Governors also voted for our current vice president, Anne Renshaw. With this election, Anne won her fifth consecutive election as a delegate to the CSBA. The Village News made no mention of...

We are now receiving applications for students who will be arriving in August for the 2008/2009 school year, returning home in June. These high school age students are...

  • Isn't fire prevention more critical?

    Updated May 22, 2008

Congressman Issa announced [Village News, 4/24/08] that FPUD would receive $1 million for final design of the Santa Margarita Conjunctive Use Project. The federal government, via Congressman Issa, also provided $670,000 to the Federal Bureau of Reclamation to prepare feasibility studies, analyze potential environmental impacts and hold public meetings for this same project [Riverside Press Enterprise, 1/8/05]. Are these cash cow payments of taxpayers’ money for a project that will only provide small, limited supplies of w... Full story

  • Dialog, appeasement or support

    Updated May 22, 2008

This week President Bush made a significant blunder while giving a speech in Israel. He compared Senator Barack Obama’s willingness to talk with Iran, Syria and Palestinians with the “appeasement” Prime Minister Chamberlain gave to the Nazis in 1938. The rightwing echo machine went into full speed, naming Obama as the one Bush was talking about and how history has proven that appeasement of evil regimes has had disastrous results. What Chamberlain actually did in 1938 was to concede part of Czechoslovakia to Hitler in a tre...

  • Fallbrook youth champions fundraiser for Kenyan orphans

    Updated May 22, 2008

Cathleen Huet, an eighth grade student at St. Peter’s Catholic School, has proven time and time again that one is never too young to make a positive difference in the world. A couple of years ago, Huet read an article regarding how the nonprofit KidsTalk Foundation was helping to erect a school for orphaned children in Kenya. Overwhelmed with empathy, Huet, 11 at the time, decided to dedicate her time and heart to the organization. “I love to help out the kids in Africa; it...
