  • We need freeways and roads

    Updated May 28, 2019

We are at a crucial point in the future of San Diego County. There seems to be a growing trend of pushing people out of their cars and making them take public transportation, as if driving vehicles is somehow evil. The San Diego Association of Governments is in charge of appropriating transportation dollars in our region. It’s made up of the region’s 18 cities and the county. In 2004, San Diegans voted to extend a half-cent sales tax for 40 years. That tax would generate $14 billion, which SANDAG promised to use to rel... Full story

  • Keeping promises, spending wisely

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, Special to Village News|Updated May 28, 2019

Gov. Gavin Newsom just released his “May Revise,” which updates the preliminary budget he released in January to serve as a discussion starter leading up to the legislative deadline for final budget approval, June 15. There’s a lot to like in the governor’s $214 billion budget proposal. First of all, raising the child tax credit to help families cope with our skyrocketing cost of living deserves support. And with California’s population expected to expand to 50 million b... Full story

  • To the editor,

    Updated May 28, 2019

You have to hand it to trees. After five years of continual abuse and neglect, thanks to an occasional timely rain, the two liquid amber trees on Alvarado Street were still standing upright, majestic, healthy and proud. But in the end, they met their forecast doom and ending. They evidently did not fit into the long-term plans of the Mission Resource Conservation District, being of non-native origin. Another immigrant thing. As a neighboring property owner, I can tell you that they will be sorely missed. Robert Sommers... Full story

  • Re: 'Affordable Care Act – revisit ad absurdum' [Village News Miller letter, 5/16/19]

    Updated May 28, 2019

The author of the letter I’m rebutting calls Medicare for All “socialized medicine;” it’s not. Conservatives tend to describe anything liberal as “socialist” in the Marxian sense. Actually, socialism refers to an economy where “the means of production, distribution and exchange are owned or regulated by the community as a whole.” I fail to see how that applies to a single-payer health system operated by the government, which is what Medicare for All is all about. As I stated previously, former President Barack Obama’s... Full story

  • To the man who returned my wallet

    Updated May 28, 2019

Tuesday afternoon, I popped into Joe’s Hardware to pick up a few items. Upon returning to my truck, I noticed a puddle underneath and got down on my back to investigate. At this point, my wallet fell out of my pocket. I noticed that it was missing about an hour later. I retraced my steps, asked around and tore my truck inside out. Nothing. I did the unspeakable. I lost my wallet. After this fact sunk in, I was about to call the bank and have them send me a new credit card when a little voice inside my head said, “Whoa, slo... Full story
