Fall Brook was known for its semi-bituminous coal, and became a thriving coal town, renowned for its neatness and picturesque charm. The Fallbrook Railroad delivered coal to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to the south and, to the north, above Corning, New York. But in 1871-72, sadly before the vaccine was available, there was a smallpox epidemic in which... Full story

There is a parable about the old bull and the young bull standing on a hill. While the younger bull would charge head down into the problem, the wily, older bull would take a more circuitous route. "A Walk in the Woods" is a retelling of what might have happened between two negotiators working toward peace. Based loosely on the real-life happenings when in July 1982, Paul Nitze and Yuli A. Kvitsinsky chose to take a stroll up a logging road to escape possible bugging in their...

Maggie Stewart Special to the Village News Today is the day to be domestic and to practice my farm-to-table mantra. I need to create something with loquats. You know, those luscious yellow-orange fruit clusters with beautiful, large green ribbed leaves that are everywhere in Fallbrook this month. Here's a little background on loquats. This member of the rose family made its way from China to Japan, India and Israel where they hopped over to the Mediterranean countries and...
San Diego County is on pace to have one of its busiest years for solar rooftop permits, and it could get busier as a 30% federal tax break to help offset the costs ends in 2019. Through April, the 10th month of the fiscal year that started July 1, 2018, and ends June 30, the Department of Planning and Development Services has issued more than 5,700 residential solar permits. At that pace, the county would issue about 6,900 residential solar permits by the end of the fiscal year, a 25% increase over the previous fiscal year. A...
SACRAMENTO – Sen. Brian Jones, R-Santee, has released the video, “Are You Kidding Me?” on the mandates that are proposed to keep the planet healthy. The video was inspired after Jones read Joel Fox’s “Cost and Taxes in the Green Economy” on Fox & Hounds. Jones said, “We should do all we can to protect our planet, but setting unrealistic, pie-in-the-sky goals and then raising taxes to pay for it is unfair to the working poor, struggling middle class families and the businesses that are barely making it here in California....
Jason Good Special to Village News If there’s one thing I’m certain of, it’s that no family ever recovers from losing a child to addiction. No family ever fully recovers from losing a child, in general – not just from a drug overdose. It’s an unnatural sequence in that children are supposed to bury their parents, not the other way around. When parents have to bury their children, it’s as if a piece of them is lost forever. A gaping void of emptiness is left behind that is never again filled. The sad part of the whole drug...
FALLBROOK – A person’s desire to be outdoors can sometimes be at odds with the outdoors itself. The dead of winter tends to be a time of year when people know to stay indoors, but the dog days of summer can be dangerous as well. Heat-related diseases like dehydration can put lives at risk. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, children and people over the age of 60 are particularly susceptible to dehydration. Understanding dehydration and how to prevent it is essential for any...
Randall Wegener Special to the Village News Do you ever wonder what it would be like to have someone you could ask life’s questions like “Why do I keep getting sick?” “How do I move forward in my life?” “How do I retrain my mind to think more positively and stop all the mental chatter?” “What is a good diet for me?” These are some of the questions that a life coach can help people with. By having a life coach, it can help them alleviate stress and live a healthier life. Life is based on the decisions people make that allow t...
If ever there were a weak link in hospital care, it’s what happens when someone leaves the hospital. It’s becoming clear that the process known as discharge planning is deficient, can be harmful and sometimes results in a patient’s decline. One in five patients across the country needs further care after discharge from a hospital, according to a series of four reports published by the United Hospital Fund in New York City. That’s a lot of people, and many times their families don’t know where to turn for help. The fund said...
Teasing happens with children of all ages. It may be seemingly innocent name-calling, or more serious harassment and ridicule, but whatever the level it can be painful and psychologically damaging. Recognizing and dealing with negative interactions between children, such as teasing and bullying, is an increasing area of focus for most schools today. It is especially true as social media has provided new and far-reaching means for children to shame other children. But bullying doesn’t end with the school year. It’s important f...

"Audrey is a...
The 12 highest seeded Division III baseball teams participated in the CIF playoffs, and Fallbrook High School finished the regular season as the division’s 13th seed. “I’m disappointed,” Fallbrook coach Pat Walker said of missing the playoffs. “It was one of those seasons where we couldn’t quite click.” Fallbrook held the 11th seed entering the Warriors’ final three games of the year, but the Warriors lost twice to Escondido High School and once to Mission Vista High School. “It was a tough finish,” Walker said. A May...
One thing everyone knows is if two people experience the exact same incident, each person will have a slightly different perspective or analysis of the incident. Everyone comes packaged with their past experiences and knowledge. It happens in the political arena and filters down to how stakeholders view the outcomes of legislation that is passed and eventually becomes law. Two days before the May 31 legislative deadline in Sacramento, the Assembly voted 42-29 to approve Assemb... Full story
SAN DIEGO – San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister began sending 36,489 notices recently to property owners who did not pay all their 2018-2019 property taxes.
