  • Rocketry records tumble at Zion

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

FALLBROOK — Zion Lutheran School’s eighth grade class held their annual hydro-rocketry finals at Ingold Field in Fallbrook on May 15 and 16. The competition is designed to see which team can design and build a rocket to keep its payload (nosecone and tennis ball) aloft for the longest period of time. To accomplish this, the payload must separate from the rocket body at the highest point in its flight and slowly descend by means of a parachute. Keeping the payload aloft for 30 seconds or more is considered to be a significant...

The General Plan Amendment proposal also sought to change the site’s regional category from an Estate Development Area and an Environment...

  • Poet's Square Speeders

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

I live on Almond Street and I am very tired of the people who live in Poet’s Square and their excessive speeds on Almond. There are many little children who live on this street and the speed limit in a housing area is 25 mph, not 45-plus. Especially annoying is the motorcyclist who roars up the street between 11:45 and midnight almost every night. The Highway Patrol used to monitor our street and I wish they would start again. They could make their “quota” of speeders by just parking on Hill and Almond. I think all of us on...

  • Reche Club thanks supporters

The Reche Community Club wishes to thank the many people who contributed to the success of our first Spaghetti Dinner. This was the second fundraiser of the year, the first being our Chicken Pot Pie Dinner held in October. As you may know, the club members are dedicated to the upkeep of the buildings and grounds of one of the oldest one-room schoolhouses in North County. We are deeply indebted to Rose Palculick, who made the delicious sauce; Linda White, who donated her special salad dressing; and to Major Market for their...

  • Cinco de Mayo participation appreciated

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

Some individuals are privileged to experience in a lifetime a rare occurrence of “true community spirit that crosses all boundaries.” On short notice, less than a week, as co-chair of the Cinco de Mayo Festival on May 6, we had to come up with $900 for an unexpected expense for this event. I e-mailed all the churches in Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow asking for their financial help. I would like to share with our community that St. John’s Anglican Church, Hilltop Center for Spiritual Living, United Methodist Church and Zion...

  • A hopeful sign

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

It took a death to help sports ownership to talk and to take the first step. I enjoy our Southern California professional sports, from the Dodgers and Padres to the Lakers and the Clippers. I have taken my children and grandchildren to their games now and then. Now I am watching (on TV) some of the baseball playoffs. However, the alcohol ads plus its presence during the games gives totally the wrong message to our youth. Knowing their reason for the ads, of course they can’t and won’t include the dangers connected with the...

  • More mail means more problems

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

It is no surprise that the amount of mail we receive in our mailboxes continues to grow. Most roadside mailboxes have the capacity to hold this mail but many others do not. Residents who have small-size post office boxes at Fallbrook Post Office may need to pick up their mail daily to prevent overflow conditions that result in the mail being bundled and held in back for pickup. One of the provisions of renting a post office box is that the mail will be picked up promptly to avoid accumulation. When customers fail to pick up...

  • FPUD wastes ratepayers' money

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

My opinion of FPUD’s recent performance follows and what I see is a terrible waste of ratepayers’ money. I have many research articles on UV radiation; it is only one of many disinfection methods. UV radiation leaves no residue, providing proof that a 99.95-percent bacterial kill is obtained; therefore, a follow-up disinfection method such as peroxide is recommended, but FPUD prefers chlorine. Why waste money when chorine disinfection by FPUD is already in use? Furthermore, I demand that FPUD distribute the State of Cal...

  • What can I say?

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

I am impressed that my letter [“Some self examination is in order,” Village News, Opinion, 5/17/07] evoked responses from Jon Monday and Joe Howard Crews. It must have been good! Jon Monday’s letter illustrates vividly our philosophical differences. I say that he is fundamentally wrong on some points but his views are classically those read in liberal literature. He acknowledges that John Bolton and Paul Wolfowitz are intelligent but says they were inappropriate for their jobs. That opinion has no factual substance. The c...

  • Clayton celebrates 90th birthday

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

FALLBROOK — Neither fractured bones nor an unexpected stay at the Fallbrook Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility could deter Margaret Clayton from celebrating her 90th birthday on May 10, 2007. Surrounded by friends from the Fallbrook Woman’s Club chapters of Literature and ESO (Epsilon Sigma Omicron), the day was celebrated with all the pomp and ceremony a wheelchair-bound Clayton could muster. A highlight of the day was the presentation to Clayton of a certificate of recognition from the General Federation of Women’s Club...
