    Updated Jun 10, 2010

Another round in a decades-long fight over a landfill proposed near Pala drew sharp-edged comments and more than 300 people to an environmental planning meeting held last week. The jammed hearing at the San Marcos Senior Center on June 3 marked another chapter in a long and bruising saga that has included numerous protests, environmental reviews, lawsuits, costly ballot measures, full-page advertisements and written exchanges on newspaper editorial pages. It centers on...

  • Thank you 'Angel Guy'

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

This is a letter of apology and thanks to a sweet gentleman at a stop light. I left my house the morning of June 2 in a rush, in my little motorhome. I was driving to Texas to await the arrival of my first grandchild. I was a little excited. I put the last of my baggage in my rig and rolled out the driveway from my house near the high school. I got to the stoplight at the Mobil station on 395. I stop. Someone starts banging on my rig. “What the heck?” I think to myself. I open my door and see this adorable man getting out of...

  • We disagree with policy adopted by FPUD

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

Printed in today’s Village News is a copy of a letter sent to FPUD regarding the water and sewer policies put into place in July 2009. Opinions regarding these changes are made clear in the letter. The owners of buildings we manage and others in the community have instructed us to move forward on this challenge. Should ratepayers have input, I suggest: 1.)You attend the FPUD public hearing on June 14, 2010 at 4 p.m. in the FPUD board room. It is my understanding that the policy will be discussed at this meeting and public i...

  • What happened to the voice of the people?

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

The general consensus is that selecting the Highway 76 Northern Route is a very dangerous alternative. It seems that the northern route has been etched in stone since the very beginning. Whatever the people say goes on deaf ears. Where is the legally mandated set of duplicate plans/costs, etc., for an alternative route? Multiple people have stated the terrible problem of the currently dangerous ingress/egress. How is this going to improve with higher speeds and more traffic? We feel that CalTrans has to listen to the...

  • World Cup is on its way

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

Last weekend (Memorial Day), I proudly wore patriotic colors of red, white and blue, but from June 11 onward, for a whole month, I’ll be changing to the red and white colors of St. George of England as I cheer on the land of my birth to victory (hopefully) in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final in South Africa on July 11! As I keep telling everyone, this is the biggest sporting event in the world; my very favorite spectator sport. I’ve been a supporter of Manchester United (raving about my heroes first Bobby Charlton then lat... Full story

  • Thank you for recognizing the students' efforts

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

I want to thank-you so much for the wonderful article “Frazier Students embark on 12 Days of Fitness journey” in the May 20 issue about the Governor’s Challenge at William H. Frazier. The teachers, staff, and parents were thrilled to see our students in the news. Debbie Ramsey did a terrific job describing the events and Paul Gallaher’s photographs were super. I also want to thank all of the presenters and parent volunteers. The “12 Days of Fitness” could not have happened without their help. Our teachers and staff deser... Full story

  • Caltrans: Fix 76 and keep Fallbrook safe

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

The East section of SR76 between South Mission and I-15 is a corridor noted for emergency vehicles responding to collisions with injuries and fatalities. Caltrans has stated the 76 East section “Draft Environmental Impact Study/Report” (DEIR) is scheduled to be published in June or July 2010. The DEIR is the most important document the public will see on the improved 76 as it contains definitive details on the two Caltrans route alternatives, Northern Existing Alignment and Southern Alignment for the “improved” 76. Both al...

  • Christian religion does not make demands of judges

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

Memorial Day had started out so well. Early in the morning I had said a prayer of gratitude for the brave men and women who had faithfully served our country. My flag was up and flying proud. Then I read an article on the front page of the North County Times, “Christian conservatives targeting seated judges.” It seems that some conservative attorneys are on a “Mission from God” to unseat four California judges because they don’t adhere to the religious right’s agenda. In the past I have silently railed against the cowardi... Full story

  • What is SDG&E thinking?

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

I recently asked a utility crew placing a wood power pole within a half-mile of their transformer that ignited the Rice Canyon fire why they weren’t installing one made out of metal and they said it was because SDG&E did not consider the area a fire zone. I just asked the SDG&E installer of their new “smart” wireless electric meter its capacity to channel power from residential solar or wind generators and was told that it did not accept energy contributions from alternate sources. Simply asked, what is SDG&E thinking? Tom C...

  • Wrong project

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

What is true about Liberty quarry? People driven by fear of losing, greed and power, are ignorant of their connection to the ‘whole.’ John Muir says, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” Granite is “tugging” at our world! The ‘creative truths’ of Granite’s color, glossy ads say they will provide ‘local jobs.’ What jobs? Quarries hire trained people. After laying off employees at other locations, wouldn’t Granite offer them jobs first? Gravel truck drivers will be contract...

  • Liberty quarry a poorly thought through project

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

The Liberty granite quarry near Temecula is a good example of a very poorly thought through project. It is the need of the many versus the greed of the few. Needs include clean air, open space, aesthetically pleasing environment, save habitat for wildlife and animal pathways, less freeway congestion, safety from large gravel trucks, protection from noise and dust at Pechanga Resort and golf course and Temecula Creek Inn Resort and golf course and surrounding homes, schools, and parks. Protect Santa Rosa Plateau ecological...

  • Where was Obama on Memorial Day?

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

I read in disbelief that President Obama would not attend the wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day; instead he abdicated his duties to Vice President Biden. Obama’s absence sets a very disgraceful precedence; instead Obama chose to speak at a function in Chicago. Should we be surprised? This is typical of Obama. His actions are divisive to the country. My uncles served in World War II, one in the U.S. Air Force and the other in the U.S. Marine Corps. I wonder what their thoughts would be on th...

  • The Mexican people in America

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

I’ve been going to churches for many years, all kinds of churches, but Catholic churches most of the time. I went to St. Peter’s Catholic Church here in Fallbrook a few times - to the Spanish mass. I never saw so many people at a mass as I have at these. All the seats were taken. People are standing all over the church. If they put loud speakers outside the church, they would have large crowds all over the streets. They would need cops to control the area. Maybe some Americans do not like the Mexican people, but I bel... Full story

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

The Fallbrook Rugby Club reached the state championship match between the Southern California Youth Rugby League and Northern California Youth Rugby League champions before losing to Jesuit High School of Carmichael for the second consecutive year.
