    An 81-year-old Palm Desert man died and his 81-year-old wife was critically injured after he tried to make a u-turn on Old Highway 395 in Fallbrook and his sedan was struck by a pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol and broadcast news sources. The crash was reported at 2:57 p.m. near Pala Mesa Drive, according to a CHP dispatcher.   • National Weather Service issues wind advisory for Riverside, San Diego counties

    The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the deserts and mountains of San Diego County as well as the mountains of Riverside County among other areas; the advisory is expected to remain in effect until 3 p.m. Wednesday. A low pressure system moving inland from the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies is expected to bring stronger onshore flow to Southern California, according to the NWS.   • Firefighters battle blaze at Oceanside-Carlsbad border

    Firefighters from at least five San Diego jurisdictions were battling a brush fire on the Oceanside-Carlsbad border this morning, a fire dispatcher said. The fire was on the eastbound Ronald Packard (78) Parkway east of El Camino Real on the border of Oceanside and Carlsbad, a dispatcher with the North County Dispatch Joint Powers Authority said.
