    Updated Jun 17, 2010

Fun and games for children are one of the vital components of this year’s Fourth of July celebration on the grounds of the Grand Tradition, sponsored by the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance (FBA). Children’s activities chairperson Claudia Morris says plans are well underway to provide some special opportunities for youth that will make them feel particularly involved in the patriotic celebration. “We are going to have some craft projects that I think the kids will find reall... Full story

As part of her advocacy campaign on behalf of military families, she met privately with service personnel and their loved ones at the USMC base and addressed about 1,000 Marines and their families. “You’re heroes just as much as our men and women in uniform – the spouses who stay behind, with all the pride of...

  • Reconsider public school programs and teachers

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

I would like for other parents in Fallbrook to be aware of the outstanding teachers and programs at our public schools. Too often we hear about the failings of our schools and people judge our schools by the aged facades of the buildings. But within those walls are dedicated, talented teachers who are often under-appreciated for the work they do to educate our children. I feel fortunate to have discovered Fallbrook Street School’s multiage program, which consists of a 20-student class encompassing grades K-1-2. The Montessori...

  • Dear Dr. Clements,

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

It was a pleasure to see you the other day and share our experiences at “The Club” (Senior/Adult Day Care Center). ‘The Club’ has been a source of thoughtful care that I had imagined impossible to find. My husband, Jim, has been experiencing the effects of advanced Alzheimer’s disease the past few years. Many close friends had seen the problems I was facing in everyday life as a caretaker-spouse and offered many “suggestions” to me. I listened to them all politely, but thought I could provide the total care that Jim required....

  • Horn re-election still a maybe

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

Bill Horn may be elected again, but maybe not. Mr. Mercurio, in another paper, thinks he should not be due to various gaffs and presumed transgressions. The Stonegate Merriam Mountain Project seemed to be the major block with the supervisors and, as I see the result, it was very close. Stonegate owned the land, submitted plans over a decade, but with a relative few real complaints, some near and not so near neighbors complained, mostly on traffic noise and fire possibility. County planning had worked out virtually any and... Full story

  • Neiman's attention to detail a win

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

At a Healthy Woman’s presentation, I was lucky and won a car detail gift certificate from Neiman’s Collision Center. I made an appointment, brought my car in, and, a few hours later, picked it up. Wow! I had no idea what a change would occur. Unbelievable! My car looked brand new! I’d like to thank Monica for procuring this nifty door prize and, of course, thank you to Neiman’s for offering it to the ladies who attend the hospital-sponsored Healthy Woman’s series. When my car needs another dose of TLC, I will certainly...

  • Youth baseball game unfairly umpired

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

To: Board of Directors, Fallbrook Youth Baseball and tournament. I attended your tournament June 13 and was appalled at the practices that your organization displayed. As a grandparent and mother of five young men, who have played sports from youth to professional ball, on only one other occasion have I witnessed a situation where the kids were not a priority. You changed the rules in the middle of the game. How do you change the brackets in a playoff game when the line ups were set several days before? Explain to everyone -... Full story

  • Warning for Medicare patients

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

For those who are seniors or those who care for them, you may want to know the latest in Medicare coverage. If you are able to swallow, you will be punished. Last July, my mother spent two days at Tri City Hospital. She was handed medication in a cup by the nurse and my mother swallowed the pills. Because she was able to take her medication “by mouth,” Medicare refused to pay for her medication. It is considered “self administered.” If your doctor orders oral medications, refuse them. Only medications via suppository or IV w...

  • Re: 'Where was Obama on Memorial Day?' [Letter, Village News, 6-10-10]

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

I read in disbelief that Jim Lowery would make accusations about our serving president based on some right wing rag news before checking his facts. He could have been correct if he had said that President Obama set the precedent of being the first black president recognizing our veterans at a venue other than Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day. However, previous presidents also not visiting Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day include President Reagan (three times – one additional time he was in the hospital) and...

  • One of Fallbrook's finest

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

It’s not often that dentists are complimented. Dr. Montague is our family dentist and I highly recommend him. His referral to Dr. Kusner, who only does endodontics, was a real blessing. Both of these men take pride in their practice, are thorough, and professional in every way. We are fortunate to have such highly qualified dental practitioners in our town. Updated Jun 17, 2010

Fallbrook High School’s track and field teams had five individuals and one relay team in the CIF finals meet May 29 at Mount Carmel High School, and three of those entries medaled for being among the top six Division I finishers. The boys 4x400 relay team was sixth among Division I schools, junior Amanda Mulkey placed sixth among Division I girls in the 800-meter run, and sophomore Hannah Wilson finished sixth in the girls long jump. “There were some great things that hap...

  • Warrior baseball finishes season 10-17

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

Fallbrook High School’s baseball team finished the 2010 season with a 10-17 overall record, including a 5-10 Avocado League mark which placed the Warriors fourth in the league standings. “We weren’t as successful as we wanted to be,” said Fallbrook coach Jesse Schuveiller. “I’m proud of the way the boys hung in there and stayed together.” Fallbrook swept San Pasqual to win its first three league games and give the Warriors an 8-7 record at that point. “We started off the season pretty strongly,” Schuveiller said. The Warriors...

  • Guac Girls win pool at Cal Cup

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

The Guac Girls, Fallbrook High School’s off-season field hockey team, won its pool at the Cal Cup tournament May 29-31 at Moorpark Community College. “It was great to win our pool,” said Guac Girls coach Kathy Waite. “I was so thrilled.” The team cannot officially represent Fallbrook High School outside of the CIF field hockey season, and without the ability to call themselves the Warriors the team has adopted the name Guac Girls for tournaments and other play. Waite coa...

  • CIF splits water polo into three playoff divisions

    Updated Jun 17, 2010

The CIF San Diego Section’s Board of Managers approved a proposal to split boys water polo and girls water polo into three divisions for playoff purposes. The Board of Managers vote June 8 had no opposition. “There was a need to break it up,” said CIF commissioner Dennis Ackerman. “It will help the teams in the middle.” The high school water polo community expressed the sentiment that an additional division would benefit the sport by providing more student-athletes opportunities to compete at higher levels. The playoffs for b...
