  • Unlicensed tree trimmers can be a liability

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

Homeowners who hire unlicensed contractors to perform tree work may expose themselves to liability for injuries suffered by employees of the contractor. Many times throughout the year, unqualified entrepreneurs grab a chain saw and decided to go into the tree business. “With thousands of dollars at stake, not to mention the integrity and appearance of your property and your personal safety, make sure you investigate before deciding which company you should hire,” warns Peter Gerstenberger, senior advisor for safety, standards...

The roots of Sides’ real estate knowledge date back 36 years ago to Los Angeles County, but she has specialized in and been based in Fallbrook for the last 26 years. “I came here to Fallbrook when interest was 17 ½ percent,” she said, laughing at the memory. Sides has been on the exhilarating rollercoaster ride o... Full story

  • Graduation

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

David Wechter has been known to wear Fallbrook High School’s colors in a unique way – painted on his body. Seventeen-year-old Wechter, the valedictorian for the Class of 2007, is one of a handful of dedicated fans who coated their bodies with thick red paint for football games, even on Homecoming night when the rain came, causing the paint to run in red rivulets down their bodies but never dampening their spirits. “The memories I have with those guys are the best,” Wechter said. The day before graduation, Wechter admitte...

  • Jumping out of airplanes

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

My good friend Mark received a rather unique gift from his wife for his birthday a few years ago. I truly believe she had no ulterior motive (in her heart, she alone knows!), but the gift was for one “skydive!” He loved it and now he’s hooked and has done it a few more times. Now, for the jump, he was lashed to a professional skydiver, but Mark relates that the experience was absolutely awesome! Maybe I’m jealous; then again, maybe I’m still in my right mind! I would really rather be sick when I die. Mark’s “falling do...

  • Seeing light in darkness

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

Working in a church, sometimes it’s hard to see light in the midst of darkness as we witness great losses, hear the heart-wrenching cries of those left behind. I remember grappling with my own despair over the loss of my husband during a silent reflection period at a retreat I was attending. I kept repeating, “Why, Lord, why?” As I closed my eyes praying intently for an answer, in my mind’s eye I could see my husband, Terry, off in the distance standing 50 feet away surrounded by pure white. I quickly opened my eyes and shook...

Fallbrook High School graduate Kenny Adams had the low score in a qualifying tournament for the Southern California Amateur golf tournament. Adams shot a score of 68 in mid-May during a qualifying tournament at the Southern California Golf Association course in Murrieta. “It felt good to finally get back in the competitive mode,” Adams said. “It was good to get off to a good start.” The qualifying tournament was the first for Adams since the end of the college golf season. Adams is currently a junior at the Univers...

  • Warrior baseball grows in rebuilding year

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

Although Fallbrook High School’s baseball team missed the CIF playoffs for the first time this century, the rebuilding season of 2007 was considered a success by assistant coach Gary Carter. “Success is based on a lot of different things,” Carter said. “I don’t base what success is off stats or wins and losses.” Since the 2006 team which finished 27-6 won the Avocado League championship and reached the CIF finals while the 2007 team finished 12-17, including a 6-9 Avocado League mark which tied for fourth in the six-team leag... Full story

Hughes, a junior outside hitter, was a first-team selection for all-Avocado League honors and led the entire North County Conference, which includes the Palomar League and Valley League as well as the Avocado League, in kill percentage. “Very deserving of it,” Fallbrook coach...

  • CIF eliminates one-day championship wrestling tournaments

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

The CIF San Diego Section’s Board of Managers voted June 5 to delete a provision allowing CIF sections to conduct championship and qualifying tournaments in one day. The vote will be used as direction at the state CIF meeting in October. That state vote would delete a provision allowing one-day championship and qualifying tournaments for brackets not exceeding 16 wrestlers. The change would take effect for the 2008-09 wrestling season. “It makes sure that the student-athlete’s not wrestling more than five matches in one d...
