For the Senior Challenge the American Cribbage Congress scoring system is used. A win counts 2 points and a skunk is 3 points. This gave Rebar 15 points to Sheffel’s 14 poi...

Donny Valentine and Jerry Kalman face the frustration of being good citizens, and so far, getting nowhere. The problem they face is frustration itself. Since March, adolescents waiting for busses at 31948 Del Cielo Este in Bonsall have chosen the location to confirm their personal frustrations by smashing or stealing Realtors’ signs, littering the ground with homework papers and food wrappers and trampling plants. But worse, they attempted to destroy the Casa Del Cielo monument that distinguishes the entry to the c...
Attendees of the Fallbrook Community Planning Group (FCPG) meeting Monday night, June 18, held their breath as they awaited what would be a unanimous 14-0 vote declining the Meadowood development proposed by Pardee Homes. Though FCPG member Harry Christiansen acquiesced that the revised plans for Meadowood were an improvement, it was still far from being perfect for this board. “The overall appearance of the project is that it is entirely too congested,” said Christiansen. “We believe that if the project were to be built...

While I applaud Governor Schwarzenegger’s initiative to entice retiring scientists and engineers into teaching, Congress still has not removed the penalties educators face upon retirement. Educators who have paid into Social Security via “private sector” employment do not receive benefits they have earned. They face penalties via the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), which are laws at this time. Educators who either entered the teaching profession as a “second career” – just as the...
Mr. Green brings up a valid point when saying he would not choose a surgeon based on their religion, position on gay marriage, abortion and political affiliation [“We need to focus on what matters,” Village News, Opinion, 6/14/07]. He is also right in saying that none of these things matter… none of these things matter when choosing a surgeon. The surgeon, unlike the President, has no influence on the morals and values in our country. We cannot use the same unbiased logic when looking to a Presidential candidate becau...
Approximately 420 enthusiastic fourth- and fifth-graders from La Paloma met with retired teacher Jean Dooley and Save Our Forest founder and teacher Jackie Heyneman on Thursday, June 7, to learn how they can help our community and our world. The importance of conserving water in the very arid region in which we live was also stresse...
More walkers participated than ever before. Two new churches participated. It was a festive event. Some people think that helping the hungry is somewhat sad. Hunger is sad, but giving those in need an opportunity to build livelihoods and recover from disasters is a joyful event. This year’s total almost reached $69,000. Twenty-five percent, or $17,250, went to the Fallbrook Food Pantry. They did not receive a full match from San Diego County but will instead, in all likelihood, receive $12,000. That means the CROP Walk genera... Full story
In January, I began contacting the county for help to stop the speeders using Almond Street. I was told we would receive two tubular counting/speed monitors to check the situation. We did not. I was told our street could be double yellow-striped. It was not. There are 25 mph signs at each end of the street, placed too close to the corners for drivers to observe them as they make their speedy turns onto Almond. I was told Almond meets the county’s width requirements, even if cars are parked on each side of the street. I was t... Full story
As the people of Fallbrook are aware, our local businesses have been robbed by armed gunmen several times this year. I can see why these criminals continue on because of our amendments to protect law-abiding citizens has been infringed upon. It is a travesty that we have been disarmed in public. There is no balance of power. Add all the gun laws and bans you want and it changes nothing, but disarms only those who abide by the law. Our founding fathers knew it was vitally important to ratify our Second Amendment right as follo...
Here are some “inconvenient truths” – There is no scientific consensus on global warming. Climate is always changing, with or without man. Hurricanes are not getting worse; our tendency to build houses in their path is getting greater. Many big businesses lobby for global warming policies that will increase their profits… and our costs. The Medieval Warm Period was significantly warmer than temperatures today and was a golden age for agriculture, innovation and lifespan. The media ignore evidence that would deflate global...
