I have never met Fallbrook High student Lauren Edwards, but I read her award-winning essay, “Is Patriotism the Cause of War?” and know she possesses an understanding of global politics, patriotism and civic duty reaching far beyond her youth. “Only by advancing the borders of knowledge and allaying fear, on both an individual and international level, can true international peace be obtained,” wrote Miss Edwards. Speaking of how governments use irrational fear to manipulate the people, she said, “When faced with a threateni...
People in Northern San Diego county who watched Sen. Mel Martinez (R) of Florida, Senior Kyl (R) of Arizona and others who worked long and hard to find difficult answers to better border security, better law enforcement and genuine pro-family humanitarianism might be ashamed of two simplistic, smirking easy riders who represent this area in the US Congress. I had a Scout troop in Hereford, TX, for many years with half Latino and half Anglo members among the 70-plus boys in the troop over those years of the ’60s. Our area w...
The global warming theory states that carbon dioxide rises into the stratosphere, forming a shield around the earth and, like a greenhouse, traps heat onto the earth’s surface. Basic chemistry and the law of gravity, combined, verify this is impossible. The molecular weight of air is 28 and the molecular weight of oxygen is thirty-two. Mount Everest climbers and fighter pilots need oxygen tanks/masks to survive at high elevations because oxygen is a heavier gas than air. Therefore, very small quantities of oxygen exist at h...
I see that like Rip Van Winkle, Archie McPhee has roused from his slumber with his typical fumbling of the facts – so much inaccuracy and so little time. Passing by Archie’s feeble ad-hominine attacks on his betters, I’ll focus on the issues he raises where things like facts exist: Yes, Archie, there is a Surface Water Treatment rule. Had you spent more of your time as an Assistant Engineer for the City of San Diego doing what you were assigned instead of crawling into confined spaces, you would know about this evolv... Full story
You know that feeling you get when you go home for the holidays? Your family cheerfully greets you, they wait on you and they are truly interested in you. Yeah, that feeling! Well, have I got news for you. On Friday, June 8, I had taken my mother out for a meal as we usually do, and this time we decided to dine at Trupiano’s Restaurant on Main. Mother is slightly hard of hearing, so she will speak louder than normal from time to time and this was one of those times. While eating her entrée, she mentioned that we had not recei...
Glen Holzhausen recently said the economy, referring to the Wall Street Journal [“What can I say?” Village News, Opinion, 6/7/07]. He should quote Fox News, too – both cheerleaders for a flagging economy. Here are facts: Forty percent of the tax benefits from Bush’s tax cuts have gone to the top one percent (those whose incomes are $850,000 and above). That top one percent has increased their total share of pre-tax earnings. In 1980, they took home about eight percent of total earnings. Now, they take home 16 percent...

The annual event, a longstanding tradition in Fallbrook, will be held Sunday, June 24, at the Historical Society museum, which you can easily find at 375 Rocky Crest Road. Rocky Crest is off South Mission...
FALLBROOK — Philanthropist Arlyne Ingold is a person who has lived up to her mother’s advice, given a long time ago. “You do the best you can,” said her mother, not realizing that her daughter’s best would make an enormous impact on the quality of life for residents of Fallbrook and Bonsall. With rising costs for their annual July 4 fundraiser, the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance wondered if the event would raise any funds at all. Ingold stepped up and said she would underwrite the entire cost of the fireworks that will...

“Gracie” is an excellent movie if you can white-knuckle it waiting for the sad part at the beginning to end. Gracie’s soccer star brother Johnny (Jesse Lee Soffer) dies in a car wreck – an extremely realistic event, especially since the number one cause of death between people ages 3 to 33 is car accidents. Even though Gracie (Carly Schroeder) is devastated by her brother’s death, she helps to repair the family’s broken heart by stubbornly insisting upon playing boys’ varsity soccer. Historically, girls weren’t allow...
