SAN DIEGO COUNTY – Independence Day celebrations can be ruined if fireworks injure a family member or friend. CAL Fire reminds everyone that all fireworks are illegal throughout San Diego County. Their use, transportation or possession could result in a fine or jail. CAL FIRE also advises that anyone causing a fire with fireworks will be responsible for the damages. Fireworks last only a few seconds, but the burns and other injuries they cause can last a lifetime. So don’t celebrate the Fourth of July in the h...

The hypocrisy of the Obama-haters: Jim Lowery wrote an angry and passionate letter decrying the fact that President Obama didn’t attend Memorial Day ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, but rather “chose to speak at a function in Chicago.” Hate blinds – and this letter is a perfect example. First, a little history lesson: not all presidents have always chosen to honor Memorial Day at Arlington. Looking back we find that President Reagan spoke at West Point one year and in California another year. President Georg...
If you are considering volunteering to contribute your time to a worthwhile cause, our non-profit volunteer TIP group is looking for you. Ask any firefighter, paramedic or Sheriff’s Deputy in Fallbrook what they think of us. Our Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) is a national non-profit group that is very active in Fallbrook. These emergency responders call us in on 911 events to be with the survivors of emergencies while they handle whatever the situation may be. We have a training academy starting on July 29 that teaches w...
I was recently reading the ads in your paper and came across the section with businesses in Temecula. One of them was for the Manhattan Delicatessen/Bakery (located at 26495 Ynez Rd. across the street from the Auto Club). Yesterday we finally decided to try it out. Oh my gosh; this is an authentic Jewish deli! We had the best pastrami. It was like biting into butter and the outstanding rye bread was made in-house. The potato and cole slaw were outstanding. Everything is made on the premises; their bakery is like a dream. As...
Is anyone else puzzled by the appearance on the front page of the June 10 issue of an article regarding a meeting which took place on March 24? I searched the article to find a reason why this story, which had been covered pretty thoroughly by the press in March, would again come up. I found no explanation in the article. The ongoing discussion of the proposed location of the widened SR76 has been interesting. Without addressing any position on the issue, and I’m sure there is merit in various viewpoints, I find the s...
Please deny the application for the Gregory Canyon Landfill. This project has the very real potential to cause devastating and unmitigatable contamination to the San Luis Rey watershed, which is home to many protected species and vegetation. The San Luis Rey River provides a water source for local communities. Contamination from this project could be detrimental to the health and safety of the citizens that depend on this safe water source. The project will gravely impact local roads and highways which already have a... Full story
Widening of SR76 between Mission Road and I-15 will affect Fallbrook’s safety depending on which route Caltrans selects in the next few months. Caltrans’ Northern Alternative makes Pala Road a four-lane divided highway. Head-on collisions are eliminated. But, residents and emergency vehicles will loose some access. A dozen or so driveways and small roads will become right-turn-only and some may close. Commuters will quickly fill the widened SR76 once opened. Traffic volume, noise and pollution will double, and speeds wil...
I was reading one of President Theodore Roosevelt’s many speeches, this one from January 15, 1883 on “Duties of American Citizenship.” “In facing the future…we should be neither timid pessimists nor foolish optimists. We should recognize the dangers that exist and that threaten us: we should neither overestimate them nor shrink from them, but steadily fronting them should set to work to overcome and beat them down…There is every reason why we should recognize them, but there is no reason why we should fear them or doubt ou...
It was my great pleasure to attend the 2010 Baccalaureate ceremony at Fallbrook High School, Sunday, June 13. I was blessed to hear the testimonies of many graduating students and the encouraging message given to them by Joe Russell, one of our local youth pastors, who motivated our students to keep strong in their faith. What a privilege to live in a community where our students can select to participate in such a wonderful faith-building opportunity. Jan Hilton...
In the game of baseball Few can hit But they all have the skill To chew and spit They’re a poor example For our wonderful youth When they show off a habit That’s so uncouth Large of cheek And brownish lip There’s dirty ground Where many spit The solution? A commissioner’s edict Without any waivers “Switch to gumdrops! They come in all flavors!” Don Foulkes... Full story
Some police officials say that by enforcing federal immigration laws, Arizona will increase crime. In other words, not enforcing laws leads to public safety and less crime? How did that ‘not enforcing’ thing work out with banking laws or the victims of Bernie Madoff? The only laws that don’t have a potential to be misused are those that are not enforced. Like immigration laws. Barbara Vickroy Escondido... Full story
“The Odd Couple” must have a very specific target range for its audience, and I don’t think I was in it. While it did get laughs from the audience, The Curtain Call Company’s rendition of Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple,” could have been so much more. Maybe it was because I’m not in the right age bracket for three-quarters of the humor in the play; maybe it was because I was unfamiliar with 90 percent of the jokes that have been reworked and reinvented since the debut of this p...

BONSALL – This year’s Sullivan Middle School girls’ basketball team achieved their best record in several years. The Falcons finished with 9 wins and 7 losses, making it to the playoffs for the first time in seven years. They also beat the Potter Junior High team for the first time in seven years. The victory was significant to Coach Bob Tucker because Sullivan’s team includes sixth and seventh graders since they don’t have enough eighth graders playing to fill the tea...

Known as the “Little Scholars” program, the process begins at the association level and up through each of the eight Pop Warner regions to the national level. In 2009, over 400,000 kids participated in Pop Warner. Out of those who competed for All American status, only one percent can be selected. The PWLS program requires a minimum of 96 percent GPA...
During the Fallbrook High School gymnastics team’s post-season banquet May 30 at Coach Heather Hawthorne’s house, sophomore Krystal Schmid was named as the team’s Most Valuable Player. “I was very proud of her,” said Fallbrook co-coach Kayla Alonso. “She worked very hard and stayed very motivated.” Schmid was one of two returning varsity gymnasts from the 2009 team which finished seventh at the 2009 CIF meet. Since six varsity gymnasts are scored to produce the team total, Fallbrook did not have enough varsity gymnasts in 2... Full story

More than 3,000 participants donned their best mud-friendly attire and ran in the annual event, sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services that is part of Marine Special Operations Command’s Hard Corps Race Series. “I’ve heard about the mud runs for years and finally...
SAN DIEGO – Without proper sun protection, fun summer activities can lead to painful sunburns, premature skin aging and skin cancer. Just one severe sunburn in childhood doubles the chances of developing melanoma later in life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair, and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. “Fewer than one-third of children between the ages of 8 and 11 wear sunscreen,” said Perry Robins, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Fou...
